Whats the going rate for private math tutoring for a middle school student ?

My son needed help in algebra 2 years ago and our tutor charged 30.00 an hour.

I am a reading specialist and have never tutored ... however, my colleagues charge between 30.00 to 35.00 and hour.

In the areas I have lived it has ranged from $10-$15 per hour for a high school kid (who are actually often the best tutors if you get the right personality--many middle schoolers will work harder for a "cool" HS tutor than a boring adult and they can often relate the subject matter to life better) on up to $35ish for a teacher.

I think this will vary according to where you live. Around here I have paid $75 an hour for a tutor through a local education/tutoring company and $50 an hour for a high school teacher.

I think it all depends on where you live.

My cousin is an elementary school teacher in NYC and she tutors and charges $90/hour...she makes, on average, about $500 per week.

Where I live, from what I have heard, high school teachers charge between $40 and $50/hour (depending on subject) and college professors from the local community college charge about $80/hour.

It also depends on the level. I have just started tutoring but for pre-calc and calculus. i charge I charge $70 an hour. I am in nj and from what I have been told this is low for this level.

I paid $40 per hour for my 8th grader to be tutored in Geometry. The tutor was a high school teacher from our district.

When my DS was in HS he was paid $20 per hour for tutoring all HS Maths and Spanish.....

K thanks for the info! DD's tutor won't let us pay her - she's an old friend of my parents -but I insist on paying her - so I've gotta figure out how much to give her. She's a retired math teacher.

A friend of mine is a 9th grade biology teacher, home on maternity leave. She tutored my son in biology this year from time to time....instead of paying her, we traded services and I babysat her two young children when she and her DH wanted to go out. Worked out great!!!

WE pay our tutor $65 per hour to tutor DD 11 in 6th grade math.
