My son will turn 7 on our family's first trip to Disney. I'm looking for suggestions on ways to celebrate in the parks. Is there any restaurant that does an especially good job celebrating birthdays?

There really isn't a restaurant that consistently goes above and beyond for birthdays. What you get is really at the discretion of the CMs at the time and may depend on how busy they are and how many birthdays or celebrations they've already had that day. If you want a special celebration I'd plan for something special like a cake or special dessert. Then if they do something anyhow it will just make it extra special.

Not any more. Every day hundreds, if not thousands of people say they are celebrating something. Disney can't keep up.

Maybe have your son pick out the restaurant for his birthday? When my DS was 7 he loved SciFi, TRex...for characters Tusker House. To be honest, my DS still enjoys those places and he's a teen now. Lol. His must do each trip is SciFi though, and i have to agree. There's something about that place that we love. Its quiet and cool, the atmosphere is quite unique. We love being able to sit in the car and eat while watching clips. Maybe stop by there for lunch...and for dinner a character meal?

The cake thing is a good idea. Although he most likely will get a free cupcake and a bday card signed by characters...as long as you note its his bday when you make the reservation of course. And like others have said, its not guaranteed but when you check in, it wouldnt hurt to let your server know that your celebrating. And make sure he wears his bday pin! I wore mine the entire trip! ha!

I believe CM and CP always put confetti on the table. Beyond that, it's a crap shoot.

We've done a few birthdays (both adults and kids) at WDW and in my experience restaurants can be pretty hit or miss in even acknowledging a birthday, even if you're wearing a pin, have it noted on your reservation, etc. This isn't a Disney criticism, but oftentimes you have to create your own Pixie Dust at WDW if you really want something special. And occasionally - usually when you're not looking or trying - you may just get something special. But I'd keep expectations relatively low.

Does anyone know if you have to call to have it noted on the reservation? I didn't notice a place to do it online. I only saw a spot to note dietary issues. My daughter is also turning 7 during our trip. I plan to have a pin on her shirt, but I don't really want to order a cake because we are not really big on having dessert at a meal, we would rather have treats a few hours later. I thought of maybe ordering a cake for our 'Ohana dinner since we are staying at The Poly and could easily take it to the room. Do they sing happy birthday when they bring it?

It's best to simply mention it at the podium when you check-in at the restaurant nowadays. As said earlier, there are literally thousands of people every day celebrating "something" at WDW, and it's simply too much to keep up with for CM's. If you want something special done, it's best to take care of it yourself. Occasionally, some people get some pixie dust, but overall, it's become less and less often at WDW...simply due to sheer volume of celebrations.

A good rule of thumb is, if you'll be disappointed to not have something, you need to pay for it.
