The idea is for you to name a band that not everybody has heard of and tell the DIS about them.... what their music is like, maybe an interesting story.... whatever...post their official website.... you decide.

I'l start..... I like the band "moe".

moe is kind of indescribable. They are a party band in the way that Phish is or was.... but they are a lot less likely to go off on some wild carzy stuff. More "rocky", but still not mainstream by any means.

Oh what fun!! I'd have to say Jonathan Richman & The Modern Lovers! What a band! Most people only know Jonathan from the movie Something About Mary - he's the stange fellow with the guitar who shows up and sings every once in a while in the movie. I love, love, love him!! He also has a song that they play on Sesame Street called "I'm a Little Airplane".

Christine Lavin! She makes me laugh! She is usually in the folk music section but she is more folk rock I guess. She is intelligent, writes funny but smart songs and has a most unique view of life. Her older stuff like Beau Woes is good and her newer live stuff is an instant pick me up for me. If I am having a bad day, she is what goes in my car cd player.

Kate Russell - the Australian whose sound resembles KT Oslin - www.katerussellonline.com .

Also these guys just broke up but they were amazing - Shiloh (5 hot guys singing crossover country - 2 of them were former Mouseketeers). www.shilohtheband.com

Great thread, PD. :) I'm always on the lookout for new talent.

Johnathan Rice: He was on the Walk the Line soundtrack

The Norweigan singer Sissel. She was the etheral voice in the background of the Titanic music...she has an amazing voice.

When her dd Sarah was born, she wrote this song...it always makes me cry like a baby when I hear it. For more info, check out www.sissel.net.

SARAH's SONG:
Mama how do I begin
To explain this situation we're in
Angels heard the beautiful words
That you prayed
And showed me the way - to you

And they knew you were in love
So they sent me down from heaven above
Angels cried and kissed me goodbye
I was long gone - This is my song to you

Oh, my song could never be
As sweet as the song you sing to me
Oh, my love could never be
As deep as the love you give - to me

When your fingers touch my skin
And you kiss my lips and tickle my chin
I breathe you in, oh Mama I'm where I belong
This is my song - to you

Oh, my song could never be
As sweet as the song you sing to me
Oh, my love could never be
As deep as the love you give - to me

Oh, one day I will be grown
And I know I'll havea child on my own
Remember me this way, cause some day
I'll be long gone - singing my song to you

Oh, my song could never be
As sweet as the song you sing to me
Oh, my love could never be
As deep as the love you give - to me

I just gave it a listen... I would enjoy this every so often!

OK - my shameless plug for Chris Isaak. He's been around for 20 years. His early stuff was considered "rock-a-billy". He's covered Roy Orbison & Elvis. He writes a lot of the stuff he sings. His most memorable are: Baby Did a Bad, Bad Thing & Wicked Game. He had a Showtime series based on his life a few years ago; that was how I first heard him. Now I try to catch a few of his concerts every year.

My personal favorite is Indigo Girls. Here is my website which is all about them: http://www.worldfalls.com/ You can also go to their official site at http://www.indigogirls.com/index.html

I adore the Raveonettes. They have a 50ish kinda sound that I just love. You can hear brief sound clips from each song on their latest album here: http://www.raveonettes.com

I love Lis Sørensen from Denmark. Her music is in Danish though so I doubt that would appeal to everybody! http://www.lissorensen.dk/ I haven't been able to get her CDs out of my CD player for the last six months.

Love Kate Bush. Kate Bush has been around since the late 70's and everyone knows her one US hit (which is a terrible song) Running Up that Hill. She sings with Peter Gabriel on two of his albums. She sings background on Games Without Frontiers and a duet with him on the So album.

She has some pretty amazing albums out which are just fabulous. Give her a listen, you will be suprised.

Sinead O connor. Again, only one true US hit that was crap Nothing Compares to U. She did have a small amount of controversy back in the 80s but her stuff is fabulous. Her most recent album is a bit of raggae, but her first album Lion and the Cobra is just fabulous. Sinead wrote, sang and produced the album herself.

KT Tunstall. Yes, Black Horse and Cherry Tree was sung on American Idol. Again, that is the worst song on the CD. Great CD. She is incredibly talented because she not only wrote all the songs, sang all the songs, but she also has this apparatus that plays all the insturments. Shes her one one person show.

I have three to throw in.

The first one is dManufacture. They are an amazing Orlando area band who right now is in the running to be on the Zippo Hot Tour. Take a listen and vote for them if you like what you hear. Their song "Save Me From Myself" is one of the most stunnungly beautiful ballads I've EVER heard--simply an amazing band.

The next is NYC based More, who are also a fantastic band. They underwent some lineup changes late last year that really seemed to put the band together the way they needed it to get a deal. They've got some new tunes which will hopefully be on their myspace site soon, I got a sneak preview, and they are awesome!

The third is Soundevice out of Atlanta, featuring Erik Rogers (formerly with Stereomud) and added last year was Ryan Vikedal, the guy who played drums on Nickelbacks first five CD's. Not only is there a ton of talent, but they've got some incredible songs.

Tonic Sol Fa http://www.tonicsolfa.com/ . They are an A Capella group with amazing talent. They are mostly an midwest band but they do have a national recording contract now and I think will be touring other areas. They are FANTASTIC in concert, something you can bring the kids to see. Their bass is AMAZING. They started out as a local college band and have grown from there.

What a great thread. I like it so much, I'm just posting to bump. I have nothing to add really, just that perusing some of this will help me through my rainy afternoon.

Am loving dManufacture "Save Me From Myself!" There's a keeper.

Am in a music slump right now til souldude gets his CD together. Have been really wanting some new good music - everthing stinks lately.

I've recently rediscovered an old favorite of mine...The Ramones. So fun.

Matthew Good. He's a Canadian rock musician. His stuff is unique, I'm having trouble trying to think of a comparison. Deep lyrics, awesome music. He has this awesome vibrato too. :thumbsup2

I have three:

1. Silverchair- They might be remembered for their single "Tomorrow" back in 1995, when they were only 15. They had a grungy sound back then, but have since become far better musicians. Their last CD "Diorama" was awesome, incorporating a lot of strings and just solid musicianship. They're currently working on a new CD to be released later this year/early next year.

2. Jack Johnson- Some people might know who he is. He's had some success on the airwaves. He's from Hawaii and every time I listen to his music, I feel like I'm in a warm place. The man has a positive vibe and I love it. His latest CD, "In Between Dreams" is my favorite of his, especially the first song, "Better Together." It's romantic and it will be played at my wedding next year.

3. Mike Doughty- He's the former lead singer for Soul Coughing. They had a hit in the 90's with "Super Bon Bon" (No, not the Ricky Martin song). His CD, "Haughty Melodic" is a great CD to listen to in the car on a road trip...or anywhere else for that matter.

Enter the Haggis - Celtic rock - They have matured and improved over the last few years.

World Party - Pop Rock in the vein of Beatles, Squeeze - Been around a long time, but recently resuefaced. Saw the live last week, a fantastic show.

Patty Larkin - Folk Rock - A great songwriter and engaging live performer.
