I am looking at going on a European cruise in April which departs out of Barcelona. When I was looking for airfair, Turkish Airlines came up as the cheapest departing from Dulles. Does anyone have any experience with this airline? We would have a long layover in Turkey.

I've never flown Turkish Airlines, but I have a trip with them in a few weeks time (UK to Istanbul) and I'm expecting good things.

How long is your layover? If you're planning on heading into Istanbul - or going landside at all - then you'll need to pay for an e-visa, which I believe is about $30 per person.

The layover is several hours. I think we would just hang out at the airport since we definitely wouldn't want to miss our flights.

Turkish airlines is the largest airline in Europe, 3rd worldwide. They have a great service and staff on board. We use them frequent and never had any problem while flying. Just remember to get a e-visa online prior coming to Turkey (and avoid long line-ups) as the visa regulation has changed last year.

I have flown Turkish Airlines several times; they are fine. You don't need a visa if you don't exit the airport. How long is your layover? Ataturk is a pretty boring airport; you might want to make a visit into town if you have time. Beware of Turkish taxi drivers, they are seasoned con artists.

I flew Turkish Airlines this spring to Istanbul and back and was impressed with the service and the food. Ataturk airport is a prime place for people-watching and has high-end shops for browsing and decent restaurants. If you do decide to get an e-visa (very easy over the internet - I think it was $30 or so) and leave the airport, be sure to leave adequate time coming back to get through the security check-points. We had to go through four to get to our gate. Don't be nervous about the heavy military/police presence at the airport (and everywhere else, for that matter)....they are there for your protection. For a relatively inexpensive trip into town, you can catch the metro, then a tram to Sultanahmet, where you will find plenty to keep you busy. If you plan to visit a mosque, be sure to have a large scarf to cover your head and usually you'll have to take your shoes off, so make sure you have your good socks on - lol.

I flew Turkish out of Dulles to Frankfurt and they are wonderful. Excellent service. I would absolutely fly them again.
