Sara Moulton, from Food TV, said that the turkeys on sale before Thanksgiving were from last year. That is, they've been sitting somewhere frozen for a whole year. Can anyone confirm this? I don't want to buy a turkey of low quality.

Oh boy, I hope not!

It could be true in some cases, I suppose.

You could always get a fresh turkey. Walmart had Jennio turkey here pretty cheap.

I don't know if it was from last year or not, but I just bought a frozen turkey on sunday for my office thanksgiving lunch and it turned out just fine.

You have to remember though, companies have a different way of freezing food than we do. They can quick freeze food and vacuum pack and seal it so that no air gets into the food. When properly vacuum packed and kept at lower than 24F, frozen food can keep for a long time.

So... I wouldn't worry too much about it. IMO sometimes frozen is better that fresh turkey. Fresh turkey should be used within 1-2 days fo purchase and the risk of them spoiling is greater.

I just read that at Butterball.com and just watched Alton Brown on food network yesterday talking about turkey.

:)
