While we’ve been DVC members (just wife & me) since 2004, this was our first visit during a big holiday. Our daughter (age 26) lives in Orlando and we had the opportunity to spend Thanksgiving week in a 1 bedroom @ VWL.

The usual routine of rides and attractions was replaced by a relaxing holiday visit featuring the many hotel amenities, people-watching in the parks and lots of pictures. And rather than vising my daughter’s house for Thanksgiving, my wife decided to cook Thanksgiving dinner in our villa and invite our daughter & her fiancee to our place instead - it was a great idea and lots of fun decorating and preparing Thanksgiving. After her perfectly cooked meal, we spent the rest of the day with Disney World as our backyard - it was quite a refreshing difference from staring at relatives all day long!!!!

It was also interesting to observe the valet parking lot which is always in clear view at VWL. While the regular parking lot was PACKED all week and it was difficult find a spot, the valet lot was deserted - it was always less than half full and usually only 20% to 25% occupied. It was fascinating to see how few people used valet parking now that there a $14/day fee for DVC members also.

And while the parks were very busy, they did not even begin to resemble the unbearable, crushing, horrifying mobs that some of the “alarmist” threads on this site lead you to believe.

And believe it or not, we had a peaceful, relaxing breakfast at Whispering Canyon on the morning of our departure - but that’s because we were prepared! I feel so sorry for the wait staff who are forced to sacrifice their dignity in exchange for management's very poor, sad attempt at humor or entertainment. While I understand that these loud and boring "antics" represents management's unfortunate attempt at "theming," my wife are the ones who got the last laugh - we brought our own ketchup!

I hope the photos bring you to some fond memories - long live Wilderness Lodge!

Best wishes,
Dave

What a nice way to spend Thanksgiving! Sounds like you had a wonderful time! Our first DVC stay was at VWL in Dec. 2005 and it holds a special place in my heart. I just love that resort. Thanks for sharing pictures, it brings back lots of memories.:goodvibes

Thanks for sharing. I've always thought the crazy talk about holiday crowds was just that--crazy. Sure, lots of people enjoy coming during the special holidays but I think the parks and resorts more than make up for it with extra activities, decorations and magic for all. We've been there for Christmas and New year's but I can't wait to do Thanksgiving. Sounds like the kitchen provided you with plenty of space to create your holiday meal. Maybe we'll do that next year...

Nice photos! You do a really good job on night time photos. Thanks for sharing.

Great Review- I really enjoyed your pictures! It sounds like a faboulous way to spend the Thanksgiving Holiday!

Love the pics! So, I've haven't been to the WORLD yet (hope to next year) and want to know what restaurant was that with the pyramid in the background?

Awesome pics! I leave Saturday, can't wait!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Interesting to see what happens with the valet parking. Maybe they will realize they shot themselves in the foot and give members a discount. Hopefully we will not run into self parking problems at BWV next week.

Great photos! What kind of camera and lens are you using? We were at VWL in October and loved it. It's nice to see the transformation to the Christmas decorations.

Sounds like the perfect day and stay! Thanks for sharing your wonderful pictures with us.

It's the San Angel Restaurant in the Mexico Pavilion at the World Showcae in Epcot - The atmosphere is wonderful and the food is very good. Don't forget to try the tequila and the really nice 5 minute boat ride attraction called "El Rio del Tiempo" (The River of Time) located inside the pavilion.

I'm using a "Fujifilm FinePix S700" point and shoot vacation camera I purchased 4 years ago for under $200. The trick to many of these photos was the use of an simple portable tripod costing about $20. Even the smallest little tripod will greatly extend the capabilities of any digital camera - any tripod will dramatically improve the range of photos you can capture. And by the way, I earn my living as a full-time advertising photographer.

Best wishes,
David

Your pics ARE great!! Is the tripod one of those gorilla pod thingees? Also wanted to say i'm glad the crowds weren't too horrific for you, that is just wonderful! :goodvibes

I've "sent" the first post here to family for them to admire. Your description of a VWL family Thanksgiving Day is just what I would love to have someday. We had a perfectly GREAT one in Cape May:goodvibes this year but would love to try one like you had too!!!
