A co worker of mine has a CM friend at WDW and he says the famous large turkey legs are in reality, emu. I say he is misinformed, as I have heard from reliable sources that they are really turkey. Anyone have any other info on this?? Are they really turkey? Disney says they are turkey, so i believe that is what it is.

They're turkey. This rumor has made its way around many times. The extra large birds are actually farm raised just for Disney. That's why they're so big (and tasty, I might add!).

besides the fact that Disney could not call them Turkey Legs if they were EMU legs.......just plain old "huge" turkey legs....smell delicious, but have never tried one...too big for me!

Turkey Legs!!! They told all about them on a special on Disney, I think it was on the food network or Discovery channel. :wave2:

They may be turkey, but they tastee like ham to me! I did not like them one bit!

I had heard on the Food Network that they are from ~ 35 lb Turkeys somewhere in the midwest. I agree.. they DO taste like Ham!!

omg they are to die for!! i got one before the indiana jones show in mgm (our fastpass was at like 6ish) while the rest of my family got cheseburgers hotdogs ect.i got a turkey leg. i imedatly had my dad and older cousin eatting it. lol! it was really funny. i told them to eat there own food lol.

I love those turkey legs even though I do agree that they taste a little like Ham. I guess its the smoked seasoning they put in them :confused3 However I hear that they really are turkey

My mouth is watering over this topic!!! My daughter and i LOVE turkey legs!!! In 2 more days I will be eating one!! LOL MMMMmmmmmmmmmm!!!!!!!!

Those who suggest the WDW turkey legs are, in fact, emu have obviously never been anywhere close to an emu. The emu I encountered in Australia were 5-6 feet tall. Now that would be one heck of a drumstick!

I have never tried these turkey legs and I always, ALWAYS see people eating them throughout the parks. It is like my signature for me, you're not in Disney until you smell those turkey legs! lol. They kinda make me gag uncontrollably though :rolleyes2 because it's so hot and the seasoning they put on them sift throughout the air.. lol. But, everyone seems to enjoy them.. I might try one.. ? I'm not sure yet though! :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:

I was told on our Keys to the Kingdom Tour last year by the CM giving the tour that the turkey legs were actually emu that is soaked in "ham juice". Having never heard of ham juice before I wondered exactly how that would work, but since I don't even want to go near the turkey legs it didn't matter to me anyway lol

I did wonder why a CM leading a backstage type tour would give out misinformation like that.

They may be Turkey Legs but they tasted like ham to me :confused3

Another vote for "tastes like ham to me". :thumbsup2

I love the turkey legs, but way too big for one person! :flower:

There is a farm with some emus down the road from where i work. They are the size of samll ostriches so no way are those turkey legs from an Emu! The ham taste probably comes from the somking process as others have said.

LOVE THEM!!!

Yes they taste like ham. Definately a two course meal... :) Turkey plus some ham.... :teeth:
The top parts that get kinda dry are my favorite. Getting down to the bone they get a little messy and I end up looking like a 18 month old feeding myself. Turkey juice and parts all over the place.

Some of the best memories are sitting in the Rocking Chairs on the porch in Frontierland with my son sharing a leg. Nawing on it then holding it for him to have some.

I just hate biting into the "fatty" part and getting a tendon. :crazy2:

They are definately NOT ham.

When you smoke something it gives off a certain flavor. Most hams are smoked, therefore the confusion.

Here in San Antonio, during a weeklong Fiesta in March, turkey legs sell like hotcakes. Usually around $6. You see TONS of people walking around with one. Like, every 1 out of 4.
