I thought I was only going to have to pay $39 to file but it is $75 for both federal and state. Any discounts out there?

Have you tried the IRS website? They have discounts and programs on there where you can file for free. And if they aren't free, they are a good bit cheaper than $79. I've found most of them to be better than Turbo Tax.....

We paid $55 to file the Fed & State with Turbo Tax. Our bank offered an online discount thru a link they provided on my online banking screen.

I just did mine and had the same amount fee amount that you mentioned through turbo tax. On the main screen it says federal is free, yet it charged 39.99?? I have done my taxes throught them in the past and have never had to pay for federal, but always for state. I ended up sending them a email, in which then gave me a phone number to call. I called and said that the main screen shows free and I never clicked on anything to do a upgraded plan. They gave me a code to put in which then waived the fee for federal and even brought the fee for state down a few dollars. The only issue I had was that it was very difficult to hear and understand person on the phone with so much noise on their end in the background.

There are lower cost options than TurboTax. Their filing fees is why I ended up leaving them. taxact.com & taxslayer.com are two online programs. I use taxact, and have spent $30 each of the last two years (to file state). I do itemize and have 1099s (freelance work). There are some things I like better in TurboTax, but not $40 worth.

If you haven't already, check to see if your state's IRS has a website where you can file for free. My state does so I use the free TT edition for Federal and just do my state taxes on the state website, so I pay nothing to e-file every year.

I used a link through Fidelity to get 25% off TT.

That's what I used, and you don't have to be a customer. Just google Turbo Tax and Fidelity, then go in through the visitor's link. Even though I got some other offers for 25% off, the Fidelity link gave me the best overall price (not sure why since you would think 25% would be 25% regardless, but it wasn't).

My price did go up this year from last year - quite a bit. It was about $55, I'm pretty sure. If I didn't like the product so much I would switch next year due to the price increases over the last couple of years.

That is weird I used TT as did my dad we both had 1v free fed efile included in price. I used mine back end of jan and used state website to efile that one free other wise it was 19.95 to efile that.
