Tucked-Away Treasures on a Disney Cruise

With so many great things about the Disney Cruise ships, and so much to do and see while on board, I found that sometimes we missed some of the little things, and the certain nooks, crannies and features that make the Disney ships special. Five “tucked-away” treasures that come to mind are:

1. The “Secret” Decks - Nestled way on the back of Decks 7&8 are two very quiet decks. On a warm evening, if you are lucky, it is possible to find this area deserted and you can relax and enjoy the peace and quiet of a starry night, snuggle up to the one you love, and watch the meandering wash of the engines trail away into the distance. (Barb has some great photos of this area on her Platinum Castaway Club site.)

2. Baggage Claim Murals - In the hustle and bustle of disembarkation, as everyone is fighting to reclaim their luggage in the baggage pick-up area at the Terminal, most people miss the series of wonderful murals on the walls of this subterranean room. The same Disney artists who created many of the Art Deco style scenes on the Cruise Docs and promotional material were obviously responsible for doing these wonderful murals of Disney characters in different settings. Unfortunately customs/security regulations prevent taking pictures in this area.

3. Top Deck at 6:00 a.m. - The Disney ships are usually full of busy people enjoying their vacations but the same decks and deck chairs that are usually crowded with people (or “reserved” with a towel and a singular piece of clothing!), in the afternoons and evenings are deserted in the early hours of the morning as the sun is coming up. Pulling yourself out of bed, grabbing a cup of coffee and a danish and enjoying the quiet calm of sun rise on the top deck is worth the effort at least once during your cruise. (If they are old enough you can let your kids sleep in and enjoy some well-deserved parental solitude before their vacation universe once again becomes your sole reason for being).

4. The Walt Disney Theater – when it’s empty! – During our first Disney Cruise, we did notice the beauty of this tremendous theater but like most everyone, we concentrated on what was ON stage rather than the theater itself. On the second cruise my daughter wanted to ask a question about the music so we stayed behind to catch one of the CM’s and ended up being two lonely stragglers alone in this awesome space. Although the lull doesn’t last long, to sit back in one of the plush chairs and appreciate this impressive hushed space all to yourself is a treat. I couldn’t help marveling over the fact that I was sitting alone in this massive public room designed and engineered by numerous geniuses, on a ship floating above an ocean that stretched thousands of feet under my seat. Cool.

5. Beauty & the Beast Details in Lumiere’s – As you sit enjoying dinner or lunch in Lumiere’s try checking out all the neat little details, from the smallest to the largest, that tie in to Disney’s classic movie. The marble floor entrance, the embossed columns, the etched glass are all reminiscent of the ballroom scene in B&TB. Can you find all the rose motifs? The rose suspended in the glass case of the chandeliers, the rose motif floating over the recessed lights, the roses embroidered on the waiter’s cuffs during formal night. The attention to theme details in ANY of the Disney Cruise ship areas is always so neat but Lumiere’s is one of my favourite areas.

These are five of mine. Anyone else have their personal hidden gems on the Magic or the Wonder?

Dave-

Thanks for sharing these. I will look for them when we sail 9/28!

Anyone have anymore?

My favorite things:

1. The neat framed ALPHABET pictures on Deck 5 near the nursery.

2. The hidden elevator shafts with fun painted murals between decks 5-7 (?).

3. The little window looking into the Animator's Palate kitchen from deck 4. We joke and say it's our own personal galley tour, when we glance inside and see someone preparing food for dinner.

From Guest Services............

Then going to find them all.............

DAVE!!! :sunny: Where the heck have you been? It's great to see you back on the Cruise Board, don't be a stranger! :)

My personal favorite is Sessions/Cadillac Lounge in the late afternoon, listening to music on the headsets and sipping a great glass of wine as you watch the ocean go by outside the porthole window. :)

The real Dave! Wow, your trip reports were the final straw to make me book a DCL cruise. I feel like I know you, (heck, I feel like I know your wife). The mastery of writing those reports seemed to be a tough act to follow, but here you have done it again. Do you really mean that I can relax while on this trip? I was getting the impression that it's still a dog eat dog world even there. Thank you once again for illuminating beauty.
Your gazing fan, Lori

Welcome back Dave in the Frozen North...

I will always remember when I first started lurking this board 2 yrs ago, you had written that wonderful trip report that everyone so enjoyed :)
I will let you know my favorite spot after my first Dis cruise ;)

redpants............"hidden elevator shafts".......do tell where! And where can I find your window to look in the AP kitchen? I thought we explored the whole ship.......but I'd love to show my daughter those secrets, too!

Yes please tell where the hidden elevator shaft is from deck 5-7.

DAVE....we thought you were really FROZEN.......

How are you?????? We are leaving for ORL tonight and sailing
tomorrow for our 3 night $99 cruise.

Sailing with Barb and Tony and some folks we met on our January cruise...wish you were going with us.

Say hi to the family

Wow, someone who lives further up north than me! How is Cochrane? I have always wanted to come up there.
Thanks for all the interesting information. We go on our first Disney cruise on November 30th. Can't wait.

Dave, cool thread. Here's a few of ours.

Shuffleboard in the morning with my DD -- deck 4, I think, but I could be wrong. Typically not a sole in sight.

The DIY art tour, specifically the art adorning the walls on 4 and 5, is pretty fabulous.

Top Deck is pretty neat and deserted at 2AM too, for the night owls.

Grabbing a slice and a beer and the catching the late flick in the theater is pretty sweet. (Can you tell that I'm low maintenance? Just feed and water).

The walk around the deck with the CM...but on Wednesday, Thursday or Friday when the CM is doing it practically all by themselves.

Hi Dave, it's great to see you

The 'Ship Facts' Pictures on Deck#5 Hallways heading toward the forward area of the ship. I actually took snapshots of these posters and they made a nice addition to my photo album!

"The Tonnage of our Anchor compares with the weight of three elephants".

"Of the 5,000 eggs consumed every morning at breakfast - 1956 are scrambled, 552 are served sunnyside up, 480 are eaten soft boiled, 984 are made into omelettes and 976 are made into other egg dishes."

"There are 5,390 pillows on board."

Plus there are many more Seaworthy Facts listed on those walls!
:D

Dave - it is great to have you back

I may be wrong but, I think the Hidden elevator murals are those from the middle elevators at midship. if you will turn backwards toward the glass area, as you go through deck 6-8 you will see cute murals painted on the walls.

My favorite hidden place is the library on Deck 2 Forward. Although the book selection is limited, we love to check out a board game and take it back to the room. If you have a navigator veranda, it is great to play board games on the veranda.

Its not exactly a tucked away place, but the Mickey pool at 6:30 am with my daughter was enjoyable. Not another soul in sight (except for the CM getting the area ready for the day).

Thanks so much to everyone for the warm welcome back to the boards. I'm touched. So nice to see so many familar "signatures" and DIS buddies. We've been absent and away for a while for various and sundry reasons, but still frozen, still very north, and still loving Disney.

PHYLLIS you make us so green with envy with those cruises of yours. Greetings to you and your wonderful family.

So I too need to know...WHERE is the secret window on the kitchen! I've missed that one for sure and I have to know.

Now I know why I love these Boards!
