tshirt transfer problems, someone please???

I'm making my FE's...it took me quite awhile to design and print everything out. I want to do a transfer on each side of a tote bag.

I purchased the "jollee's" brand transfers for white fabric and the white canvas totes from Michaels. I'm making 9 of them.

So far I've done one side on all 9....4 look okay 5 have to be garbaged!! So on the 4 that looked okay, I started side two. It looked pretty good, but when I lifted up the tote, the side one was stuck to the pillowcase and when I peeled it off it made a mess!!!

Can these be salvaged? Can I print out another transfer, carefully lay it on top and do another on top? Or is it garbage?

My iron has a "linen" setting, which is the hottest, but I have it on cotton now. I did notice it was on linen at first.

I've spent so much $$ on this already and I'm running out of time, what do I do??

I am not sure if you will be able to do another transfer on top of the other one. One thing you could try is make the second one (the one going on top) bigger than the one underneath. That way the transfer is actually adhered to the bag vs only to the transfer underneath. I am not sure if it will work or not. It depends on several factors, like is the transfer underneath flat? Will enough of the transfer be adhered to the bag itself, etc...

On a tshirt, it would probably not work because the item would be washed routinely but on a bag, you might be able to get away with it.

In the future, when you are doing a transfer on two sides, put something hard between the layers when ironing the second side. I always put a shelf from my entertainment center inside the shirt.

I was thinking the same thing, but my iron on is a full sized sheet so if I went bigger it would only be 1/4 inch or so...

I'm thinking I should just start over, I really don't like giving gifts that aren't perfect!

I'm also wondering if it might have something to do with the ink? I have an HP printer, but the last ink I purchased was no-name brand...do you think that would make a differance to how the iron on transfers?

Or maybe it's just that I had the iron on Linen at first, so it could have been too hot. Even the transfers that are ok, aren't perfect....they look a little I don't know what you'd call it...worn or retro. It kinda looks like I planned it that way, so I can probably get away with it, at first I thought it didn't transfer perfectly because it is canvas...I've only done tshirts before!

I'm going to run to Michaels tommorrow for more totes and paper...

It is a good thing that you decided not to try. After looking at your post again, you are using light transfers, right? That means the sheet is clear in places that do not have ink. This would probably not have covered well. You would have needed to use a dark transfer.

I would suggest starting over. If they are gifts, I would want them perfect as well.

I would not think that from what you described that it has anything to do with your ink. If I understand, you are saying that when you ironed the second side of the tote, that the first side started to re-heat and in effect melted on your pillowcase. Is that right? If this is the issue, putting a hard something between the two layers will fix this.

As far as the transfers looking worn, the transfers will not be as smooth as they would be on a tshirt. You will see some of the texture of the tote on the transfer. It could be that that you are seeing. Or because you are using a light transfer, and you can see the color of the tote through all white areas of the transfer, this could make the design look different as well. Without knowing exactly what they look like, I can only guess at what might be the issue.
