The points made about alerting FAs to bin poachers and bags that are not wheels in are right on target. I have rearranged bags that are not wheels in so that I can get my own bag in the bin. In one case when it did not work, must have been a 26" bag, I notified the FA. A pax several rows behind me was very unhappy when informed that the bag needed to be checked.

I agree that it's unfair that a traveller who abides by the rules needs to gate check due to someone else. Sadly FAs don't always get involved. I recall a packed flight on Air Canada on an Airbus which has a 'box' at some seats (mine) so no leg room or place to store luggage. I had one small handbag and a laptop bag; no room in the bins, they were stuffed with oversized bags and winter coats. The FAs refused to get involved and told me to check my laptop (um, sure!) I ended up in one of the first rows with my laptop 1/2 back down the plane, so had to wait for most passengers to disembark before retrieving my laptop.

And to top it off, other passengers starting shouting at me when I opened the bins and tried to move some coats to the side to put my small laptop in the bin.

But back to our regularly scheduled topic - liquids and gels.....

my hope is that they make some exception for drinks. It's a long time from boarding the plane until the drink service begins... I'd like to have my Sprite in the event that I start to feel queasy.

Forget the airline website; those are often out of date, too. The only one that counts at the checkpoint is the TSA list: http://www.tsa.gov/travelers/airtravel/prohibited/permitted-prohibited-items.shtm#0

That list has been known to change suddenly (the point of this thread, after all), so be sure to double-check it on the day you are travelling. It's a good idea to print it that day and carry a copy with you in case issues come up.

Checked the list. Let me get this straight...I can bring 4oz. of KYjelly but no lip gloss? Maybe I could use it as lipgloss? And wow, is 4oz. considered travel size?

Is it just me or does it seem like a monkey wrote the personal items list?

Not kidding here, but I'm glad I went to the TSA website to take a look.
I have bunions (hereditary - my poor daughter's got 'em too) and I just started wearing these Gel Inserts that are placed between my toes and I would have been MORTIFIED had security asked me to remove my socks and saw those gel bunion thingies sticking between my toes!!!! and then to have that person TELL ME TO REMOVE THE FUNKY GEL THINGIES FROM BETWEEN MY TOES!!!
I mean, I give myself weekly pedicures and they're very clean and fungus free, but you know, the whole toe thing!

I will be flying this Sunday, today I printed out the TSA permitted prohibited items.

How often do they change the list ?

My only concern is my cell phone and my satalite pager. From the TSAs list pagers and mobile phones can be carrried on. Do I need to fret over the list changing before prior to this Sunday ?

your phone and pager are fine - they ahve never been an issue in the US

if the list chagnes, it will change for the better ie less restrictive

The TSA will issue new/modified directives regarding threat conditions by the end of the week. Banned item lists are being reviewed and revised as well as a few other procedural matters.

That means that after passengers go through airport security checkpoints, they can purchase liquids at airport stores and take them onto their planes, said the official. Announcement of the new rules was being made at an 11 a.m. EDT news conference at Reagan National Airport. The Transportation Security Administration said only that it planned to announce "refinements to security measures."

There are two significant changes: Travelers will be allowed to carry travel-size toiletries (3 ounce or less) that fit comfortably in ONE quart-size, clear plastic, zip-top bag through security checkpoints. Travelers may also bring items, including beverages, purchased in the secure, boarding area on-board the aircraft.

Those little travel sizes will be real popular now!!

Awesome! I will have to check to see if my small bottle of suntan lotion is less than 3 oz. This will make going to the park on your day of arrival much easier!

Not to sound dumb, but can you put shampoo or lotion in any small 3 oz travel bottle container or does it have to be in a "labled" manufaturer's bottle.
Maybe it is a conspiricy from the people who make tiny bottles.

I don't think anyone knows. I am planning to follow the threads on www.flyertalk.com as I have a one night trip one day next week so......hopefully we will know something soon.

(And then of course HOW would they know that you took the "el cheapo" product out and put your good stuff in the bottles?

Several things I observed this morning:

Passengers who presented themselves at the checkpoint with their toiletries in gallon-size bags were given quart-size bags. Whatever did not fit into the quart-size was either tossed or placed into a separate quart-size bag and given to their companion (if they had no toiletry bag of their own) to take through.

Secondly, items did not have to be in their original containers, just containers smaller than 3 ounces. I didn't see any scales. I suppose if you're really concerned they might question your item, just use a container that says 3 ounces or less. Fill it with whatever you like.

Personally, I doubt the government will subsidize travelers confused about the bag size forever, but I think it's nice they are offering the assistance for the time being.
