TSA wants more of your money for carry-ons

Im just wondering if fuel were to drop..would the fees drop or even disappear? I dont think they would.

I have an issue with Spirit lowering the weight limit (without paying for excess weight) to 40 lbs and Airtran lowering the size limit to 61". Industry standard is 50 lbs and 62". IMHO both airlines want to catch passengers who don't take the time to read the "fine print". Passengers who read the fine print would pay to check an extra bag rather then pay $$$ for a bag that's overweight and/or oversized.

Wait a minute... more carry on bags = less checked bags...... so, they just need to move some of the agents that screen checked bags to the checkpoints... problem solved......

Duds

Yep they should be checked either way.

Here is hoping that they remove the TSA from MCO...they are already beginning to phase them out at the checkpoints down by baggage claim, and let me tell you, those are the most pleasant checkpoints on the airport.

next thing you know there will be a "fee" to get yourself scanned and go through the metal detector

Actually, you already pay a fee for the "pleasure" of being scoped and groped.
The September 11 Security Fee is imposed on passengers of domestic and foreign air carriers for air transportation that originates at airports in the United States. The fee, which is collected at the time the ticket is bought, is $2.50 per enplanement and is imposed on not more than two enplanements per one-way trip.

Again, there's no need to be inflammatory. That $2.50 was set YEARS before the scanners or the new only-when-necessary personal examination. We've paid to go through the metal detectors for over nine years.

Point is . . . we pay a fee for the TSA already, and now under the guise of more carry-ons they want to raise it.

And now that more people are carrying on more luggage, they have more bags to scan. Only makes sense they would the raise the fee. Anyone who has flown in the last year or so can see there has been a big change in how many carry ons are being brought onto the airplanes.

Sorry if this is stupid, but if there are more carryons to scan, shouldn't that mean there are less checked bags to watch? The TSA does monitor both of those, right? I don't think people are actually bringing MORE with them when they travel, just packing it differently to avoid fees when they can.

well darn it, I want my money back. I'm missing out on my "groping' and I've been scanned many times but so far no scoping.

I'm through the new scanners next tuesday, I'll make sure to ask.

Price of gas also went up this week. so exactly what's your beef, outside of the usual "the TSA is the evil empire"?

.....

which suggests something else....

I wonder when the TSA will argue that due to the Obesity Epidemic, it's costing them more in electric to see all the "juicy parts" in HD on heavier travelers and have to pass along the cost.

Actually that's already the domain of the airline industry. I believe they are already charging obese folks extra fare.

Has anyone else heard "horror" stories in the media lately? No particular reason, simply curious. I'm in the Philadellphia tri state area and pretty much we get nothing on TSA problems. My business flying has picked up and pretty much flyers out of PHL are waaay more concerned about the price of air fare than so called abuses by the TSA.

I generally hang out here and on other travel sites (fodors, tripadvisor, frommans, realtravel.com etc) and nada.

Honestly if it wasn't for a few posters here, I probably wouldnt here about them at all.

I just hope they start to enforce the size limits on carry on bags! I have seem so many huge bags being carried on. One poor girl's bag was so big she couldn't lift it, so the brain trust tried to hide it beneath her coat on the floor. The flight attendant was less than thrilled when she discovered the bag. I nice man finally helped the girl with her luggage or we might have still been in waiting for take-off. I have heard more than one attendant tell a passenger that their bag was to big, but they never made them go gate check the bag.
I also have seen gate attendants making folks consolidate their stuff. If it was over two items they had to pack it all up. I was so proud.

Yeap, that's about right.

Not stupid, but not correct either. There are different screening requirements for bags passengers can access during the flight. Items like liquids, knives etc are permitted in checked bags but not in carryon bags.

:rotfl: PP was mistaken.

What??? You want there to be logic and common sense used??? Say it ain't so!!!!:lmao:
I remember the first time I used my LLBean rolling duffle...carryon sized. I was a nervous wreck about it being too big. I sat there at the gate, obsessing over it. I watched other people's bags to see how mine compared. In hindsight it was so ridiculous. That bag fit perfectly in the overhead bin..it was as if it had been made just for that purpose. Wheels in, perfect. But....what I saw others bringing onboard curled my hair. And the passengers getting on at MCO??? Seriously??? Why do people think they can bring a huge tote bag (as their personal item), a really large rolling something or other, and a Disney shopping bag full of crap? But, the FA's/GA's allow them to board.
If the GAs would stop allowing everyone to bring everything they own on board, we might see some common sense return. But people will always try to go as far as they can...even if it is over the limits. And when they are allowed to do so, well...it just keeps snowballing and getting worse.

I too have seen that small woman, having to stand on a seat, trying to shove her oversized piece of luggage into the overhead bin. She had to push, shove, and twist it to get it to fit in. Took of 2/3 of the bin. There was room in that bin for a tote bag beside that oversized bag. Well..you should have seen the woman trying to get that bag out of the bin when we landed. OMG!! I actually sat there and watched her..under the guise of finishing up something, rather than rush to get off the plane. I just had to see how she managed it. She actually broke a sweat until some idiot man came along to help her out. I know, I know...common courtesy and all that. But really??? If you bring it on, you should be able to stow it and then remove it with no help. The only exception I will make is if it's a senior citizen who obviously needs some help. Oh, and by the way???? I could be considered a 'senior' as well. You wouldn't know it to look at me, but still.

And there was my flight home from MCO in Dec, with my friend, on JB. There we sat, as we watched a passenger get up, during the flight, and go back a row or to get his stowed bag. Well, it was pretty sizable (I would hazard a guess that it was actually oversized, but I can't say for sure)...and when he took it out, he lost control of the bag and it smacked a poor old lady on the head!!! The woman was in obvious pain. The man apologized but went right back to what he was doing. Of course, it would have been nice if a FA had brought the poor woman an ice pack or something. It took the FA a good 20 mins to take notice. But that's another story for another time.

My understanding is that a carry-on is anything that fits in the overhead bin, and a personal item is anything that fits under the seat in front of them. If it fits, then they are good. Also, do some of those people have children with them? If you see a person carrying two carry-ons and they have a child with them that isn't carrying anything, they are still within their allotment.

:rotfl: PP was mistaken.

The bag must be screened regardless of where on the plane it will go. There are also things you can carry on but can not check . . . matches and lighters for example.

The screening process for carryon bags is different then the screening process for checked bags.

I think the TSA needs more money to pay for their "new toys", specifically the whole body imager.

I don't think the increase in carryon bags is as big an impact as claimed.. I agree with the PP who said the real impact is longer lines.
