DH is going to Ft. Bragg this coming weekend and is beiing awarded with a ceremonial Special Forces dagger. He of course wants to bring it home. Can it go in checked luggage or does he have to pay to have it shipped home?

Congrats to the DH.
Unfortunately, as with any thing concerning the airlines these days the answer is "Depends". My dad had a ceremonial sword he recieved at a Korean War vet ceremony a few years ago and wound up having it ship. He did not have it in a box, simply wanted to put it in his luggage.

Offically according to Southwest, you can pack forbidden items in your checked luggage. Airlines reserved the right to refuse any "suspicious" luggage. :rotfl: Whatever that means.

I would call his carrier describe the item (how big, etc and etc) and have them direct you. As a last resort I would investigate if there is a shipping company right in the airport that could be used, just in case.

Sorry, I know that is clear as mud.

My son bought a jeweled dagger at Universal and had it in his carry-on by accident (along with the other small souveniers). Of course TSA caught it and told him to go to Customer Services and have them box it for him to put in the checked luggage line. So as a previous poster said, the answer is yes.:thumbsup2

Carrier has no control or say over what the TSA allows. A better source than one's carrier would be tsa.gov

I would be leery of checking it because baggage handlers and TSA can and do steal from bags.

I wouldn't check it but ship it home. It could be missing by the time he makes it home.

I agree with this. On our last trip to WDW, both of our 2 check bags were opened and messed with. Nothing was stolen and both bags eventually reached us, but one had had the combination lock code changed (requires opening the bag to alter) and the other had had all transportation labels ripped off and the handle screws loosened (also requires opening the bag).

I would ship the dagger home and insure the shipment.
