What's to keep terrorists from flying in private planes? Am I missing something here?

Really, how crappy would it be to go through all the screening bull only to have a terrorist fly a private plane into the commercial airliner you boarded.

I just deleted something very mean. I was very close to letting my inner mean girl out but I caught her just in time. Some people are just so flippin' nasty. sigh.......

I don't understand the intent of this post ? Instead of just cancelling or 'xing out', you posted to tell us what a better person you are ?

thank you for your restraint.

I understand. Go ahead and vent. I see it too.

Fine to disagree. But some take it way too far.

Apparently it's okay to tell people how much smarter some people are, though....

LuvO - I saw it. I would have left it. :) ;)

I really *could* see it getting to the point that to fly on an airplane, you literally have to take off all your clothing, socks, shoes, underwear, diapers, feminine hygiene items, medical devices, you name it, it has to come off because there IS always the possibility of you concealing something bad all in front of a TSA agent and them handing you TSA issued articles of clothing. [/B] It's a very scary thought (all I keep thinking is people did not read their history books really well) BUT I don't think it's so far fetched either anymore. Apparently though, if it would be against your religion you wouldn't be subject to it (with reading the extra stuff) -- frankly I think a lot of people would become "religious" really fast even if they weren't!

(Bolding in your post mine..)

Thank you for bringing this up again..:thumbsup2

Right now TSA does NOT require people to expose or remove osotomy bags and such - NOR do the examine the contents of what are in these medical devices (that ANY terrorist can purchase and stick on their body with an adhesive - and people refuse to acknowledge that there currently is this huge gaping hole in their "so-called" safety..:sad2:

However, they will expose themselves and their children to these new "safety" measures while the LARGEST safety measure is being totally ignored.. If it wasn't so serious, it would be laughable..

These are not all paranoid people.

Reasonable searches are fine. I just want, as I've said before, a clear, compelling argument that indicates that invasive pat-downs or full-body scanners ARE reasonable.

And if you can prove they are reasonable, we come back to the slippery slope. Body cavities are a reasonable (for people intent on doing harm, for drug mules, etc.) place to hide things. Must we all submit to body cavity searches next? I think we need to take a stand now, before it gets to that point.

Exactly.. These terrorists stay one step ahead of us at all times (presumably - otherwise we wouldn't need these newer, more invasive/intrusive procedures, would we?) - so what do you think they're going to do now to conceal their methods of destruction? That's not paranoia - that's common sense.. What comes after A, B, C ?? "D"..

I will be very, very interested to see what the flying patterns are in the weeks and months ahead if the TSA chooses not to back down on their stance.. After 9/11, the airlines practically had to give people FREE flights to get them back on the planes and flying again..

As far as I know absolutely nothing is keeping them from doing so. Now I know nothing about private planes other than I don't have one BUT you can also charter planes. I don't know if you would have to go through the same secruity or not. I know I looked into it for a group event we were thinking about. Hence my thinking, that if I can think of several ways to get around all the security measures and I'm in no way, shape or form have any real knowledge of being a terroist, I can't imagine an actual organized terroist organization wouldn't have better intelligence, funding, inside connections (I'm pretty sure not every employee is an untouchable) and much more sinister minds.

I don't know what the answer is but I know it does seem that a lot of people always seem to basically have no line they will draw as long as they are told it's to make them safer.

Absolutely and all of this "security" is a sham and the gov't knows it. If they don't know it then they're dumb as planks and need to go home.

Also, think about this: most travelers have multiple prs. of shoes with them going through the scanner if they have a carryon bag. What makes the ones that you are wearing at the moment that much more threatening than the ones that you have packed in the bag?
While again I'm not agreeing or disagreeing with any security measure, EVERY pair of shoes goes through the x-ray scanner: the shoes that were and will be on your feet, and the shoes in your bag that you may change into once through security or on the plane. Every shoe. So I don't understand the objection. No shoe is more or less threatening than any other shoe. They're all equally safe or equally threatening, and they're all checked the same exact way. This is a non-issue as far as I can tell.

I have repeatedly posted on this thread the guidelines regarding these items (complete with link) right off of the TSA web site.. It specifically states that TSA agents will not ask you to remove them, expose them for their visual inspection, nor will they examine the contents.. Any terrorist can purchase these items and attach them to their body with the proper adhesive.. Inside of these items they can hide anything they choose to hide - and pass right through security with no inspection of said items or contents by the TSA..

The dreaded backscatter scanner should easily be able to detect any contraband item in an ostomy bag or other medical device.

In that case, why then would the groper searches be needed?

Not IME, not according to TSA. I've taken my shoes off and sent them through inside the carryon in the past, but recently they have told me that I *cannot* do that -- that the shoes that I have been wearing in the airport MUST go into the xray scanner in a separate bin. That implies that those shoes are somehow getting a level of scrutiny that is greater than that applied to any shoes that are inside my carryon. (Not true, of course, but that is what TSA is trying to claim is necessary.)

C.Ann has repeated several times (pretty much word for word from the TSA website) that ostomy bags and similar devices won't be examined by hand; nothing states passengers with medical devices won't need to be scanned with these devices.

That's asinine. That's an example of a TSO not using common sense.

In Florida now. We were a party of 5, it went perfect. No need for anything out of the regular scanner. NOBODY beeped :cool1:

It was a completely full plane. Airport at home was absolutely jammed with people.

I hope it is the same experience going home. All TSA agents were so friendly. Joking, talking.

The rules need to be consistent. After the failed attempt by the shoe bomber, all passengers must remove their shoes and place them in a bin to be run through the x-ray scanner. After the failed attempt by the underwear bomber, all passengers must remove their....

Sounds absurd?

Place me in the category of being against the invasive searches. One lady said that all they did was move the "girls" and that didn't bother her. Well, it would bother me. I am a modest lady who dresses in a very modest manner and I see no reason that my body needs to be touched by a stranger. I find it offensive that the government insists that I may have to submit to being intimately searched just because I purchased a ticket for a mode of quick transportation. They changed the rules AFTER I purchased my tickets. And if they agree to elevate one religion by exempting their women from search, they are going to have to do some explaining to this non-burka BAPTIST.

This is not true. Atlanta has them as well as Boston Logan and I went through them in both locations last week. They may not be used 100% of the time, but they are in use.

And you must in all the airports I have traveled to take your ziploc out of your baggage. It's part of the TSA guidelines. I highly doubt Orlando airport is not requiring this.

As for "barking orders" it's loud, busy, people are trying to get through quickly, and not everyone is a native English speaker. Speaking softly and sweetly does not help. They do need to speak loudly and clearly which some may interpret as "barking out orders."

Orlando does not require you to remove the 1 qt bag out of your carry on luggage. I fly out of MCO on a regular basis and have never been asked to remove the 1 qt bag.

And I beg to differ on the speaking softly and sweetly. I don't expect them to be all mushy gushy. However, some of these TSA agents hide behind the badge and act like the flying public needs to quake and quiver every time TSA even looks at them. It has nothing to do with the English language either. He clearly understood and spoke English as did most of the people waiting in line and all wondered why he was yelling.
