Actually I think that these locks draw attention to your suitcase as in "look at me, I have something they care about in here, you might want it"
I have never locked a suitcase and never had anything taken, but I also don't put anything in there anyone would want.....
I think they provide a "false" sense of security!
Well, to use your argument. I have always locked my suitcase and never had anything taken but I ALSO don't put anything in there anyone would want. I do NOT think they provide a false sense of security since anybody travelling with a soft sided suitcase knows all you need is a sharp knife and your contents are spilled anyway.
And I also don't think that's it's an indication that there's something in it. It does take a bit longer to undo a suitcase that has a lock on it than one that does not and since most people are told not to lock their suitcase and don't know about TSA approved locks, why wouldn't I, a thief with limited time, waste my time on a lock when I can just open up one that doesn't have a lock or a cable tie or anything that delays me. To me, an unhindered suitcase might contain the spoils I want just as much as the locked one.
Just as a locked car door does not indicate that there's something worth stealing INSIDE the car (the car itself maybe), the chances your car will be ransacked if the door is left unlocked is more than if you had locked it even if you've nothing of note inside the car.
