I'm due to fly to Orlando on Sunday, indirect via Miami, just as a potential hurricane heads for central Florida as I fly! :sad2:

I've been during tropical storms before so I'm not bothered about the weather so much, more the fact that I'd like to actually get there on Sunday! I'm really hoping the storm doesn't intensify, or at least moves away from Miami/Orlando :scared1:

the national hurricane center is tracking it as hitting florida on saturday night:

today is tuesday? it's already hitting the islands, so maybe it will die out as it approaches florida?...they tend to intensify over open water, not as they're hitting land....so maybe it will peter out before it gets to florida...

also, how much do tropical storms affect air traffic?

last year, i took off out of houston IN A HURRICANE!! there was a hurricane hitting houston at the time we took off...
to make it even scarier - there were people who transferred to our plane because the pilot of the plane at the gate across from ours refused to take off...
apparently, in that airline (delta), it's dealer's choice as to whether they take off in bad weather...
it was white knuckle time for me..

but anyway, the point is, i don't think there's a hard and fast rule as to how weather impacts air traffic...

we landed once in orlando when there were 3 hurricanes just off the coasts of florida....one in the gulf and two in the atlantic...
we were scared to death for the last hour of the flight from new york - as we all watched the weather channel live on our seat back TVs - but we made it.....and as we landed, the entire plane broke out in applause and a woman somewhere behind me yelled out, "thank you jesus" ...

I wouldn't panic yet! Storms often change track and you are still a few days away so plenty of time for it to move away.

I am sure you will be fine :goodvibes

How gusty and from what direction tends to be the problem for aircraft. If realy strong gusts are coming across the runways in an unpredictable manner then that means trouble. I was on a Dan Air flight Paris to Heathrow that damn near burried a wing on landing due to crosswinds, pilot just managed to catch it and no more just about 20 ft off the tarmac.

Rai can also be a problem, I have been diverted from Jakarta to Singapre in the past due to a runway starting to break up during heavy tropical flooding. I would not have been bothered as our ultimate destination was singapore anyway but they would not let anyone deplane. We had to wait, fly to Jakarta then catch another flight back down again to Singapore.

I should n't worry too much, if your flight has to be rerouted there are plenty of airports around that will be unaffected that they can route you through.

Dont panic, we were there in 2004 when ivan was meant to hit so we got mived from the coast then about a week later jeanne hit and we were in disney and had to stay inside, disney were great so im sure. Ost otels etc are prepared for them

Looks like it's veering out to sea now, probably wet and windy but not too bad inland anymore

We are also flying into Miami on Sunday and then driving over to the Gulf Coast.
The latest forecast show the storm being almost at the Georgia border by 2am on Sunday and our Delta flight doesn't get in until 2:40 pm so the storm should have long passed by then.

We had a huge rain storm on Monday afternoon.
Wesh2 news has said it has been down graded and will be around Florida on Friday / Saturday.

well it is the season - there could be loads before the season's over...
not much to be done but keeping your fingers crossed....

Yep the forecast seems to be getting better, I think I'll just look again Thursday and hope it's improved more :D Also, you may see me if you're flying from Heathrow with Delta by any chance! :goodvibes
