Trying to understand locked in points.

We did the preview of BLT and had a nice long chat with the rep afterwards.

I just don't get how the points are locked in? Because looking online, 2009 points are 2-3points less than 2010 point guides. Does that mean if I buy in at 2010 the points shown then are my forever point guide for all the resorts or just my resort?

If I'm going to rent points from a DVC member how do I find out how many points its going to cost me?

I'd like to buy with some great incentives, but we just can't do it at the moment.

The number of points for each chart cannot change, but they can be redistributed. That's what happened to the 2010 points chart. Many of the weekday points went up, but the weekend points went down. It's still the same total number of points.

It's the same number of points over an entire year for the entire resort. I knew they could redistribute the points but what I didn't know is they could move points between the room sizes. For example, studios went up and grand villas went down in some cases.

If your guide said the points are “locked” he was misrepresenting the DVC product as the POS clearly says that points can be reallocated between days as long as the total for the year does not change.

The point chart for 2010 is set so you should be OK there, for 2011 DVC needs to have the new point chart out by no later than Jan 31 2010 (hopefully a lot sooner after all the complaints about the last minute 2010 changes). One thing to remember is that not only can points change but what days are in what season (or even adding or deleting season) is possible also.

for example, if there are currently 10 million points available at BLT, there will always only be 10 million points, unless they add on or take away. Then they have to distribute those 10 million points throughout the year and throughout the types of lodging so that they all add up. Can't be one point more or one point less.

Like at SSR, they added the THV, so those points get added to the SSR total points to be distributed throughout the year to all the types of lodging for all the different seasons. They could decide at some point to raise or lower the number of points required at THV from what they require for the two bedroom villas at SSR. Currently a THV requires the same amount of points as the two bedroom villa at SSR.

So if it costs 8 points for a studio for third Tuesday in October this year, there is a good chance that it will also require 8 points next year. But if it goes up to 9 points on that night, they have to reduce another night somewhere at the resort - maybe the GV or the two bedroom.

The "locked in" comment may have referred to the total number of points available at the resort and not to the number required per night.

well that's not cool. Ok, so it'll cost 92 points for "choice seasion" at AKV value view?

a value studio in choice season runs 8 pts per weeknight and 17 per weekend night in 2009. (up to 9 and down to 14 in 2010.) not sure what you are looking at.

(the "value" tag designates the type of room (i.e. smaller than usual) - the view might be savanna, pool or parking lot.)

Up at the top of the page you will see a link to DVC Point Charts. It has both '09 and '10 points, so you can pick a vacation time, pick a room style you'd like, and a resort, and see the difference between this year and next year. To give you an idea.

I've noticed that the way guides explain things can mean one thing to one person and something very different to another, even if they are hearing the same words. So your guide might be saying something that has worked for others to explain it properly, but isn't working for you. It's good you asked! My husband heard it differently than I did, even though our guide is very good at explaining things. That said, I still totally misunderstood one thing about our '09 points, while hubby understood it perfectly.

Anyway, no, your point chart is NOT locked in based on when you bought in, not at all.

I meant for a 2 bedroom in the value accommodations...

For 2010 Choice Season 2 BR Value (Jambo only.. Value are not avail in Kidani) pts : 26 Sun-Thr & 39 Fri-Sa aka one week 208...

Don't know where you got the 92 from?

You have a good question and comments and the answers are very informative. I purchased years ago and I am still trying to figure it all out. It is a wonderful deal and I just keep calling Disney every 6 months to make sure I understand everything before I book anything or roll over the points. They are great to work with on the phone.

Of course, the downside is forgetting to roll over your points in the banking period (like I just did) and now will lose 179 points.

I think the language of the points, etc. is foreign and as long as you stay on this forum and ask the questions you will do fine.

Good luck and have fun.

I sure learned something! Didn't know about the point changes for 2010--maybe I should read my DVC updates lol.

Since I moved to the west coast I haven't been using my points for disney properties. Mostly been doing interval exchanges, but now it's RCI (which I am disappointed in since they don't have resorts in all the same places as Interval). Haven't had a chance to check out RCI yet, no vacation this year, which is why I am renting out my banked 109 points.

BTW what is the purpose of restricting new members of this forum from pm-ing or emailing? I guess I can just make a bunch of posts to get to the minimum but I don't get it....

I am not sure I like RCI as much either to be truthful. I have been looking at a lot of the resorts to places we may want to go but I haven't seen much in the places we want to go. Last year the resorts did seem to be all over.

It prevents spammers from inundating users with PMs. Without this restriction your Inbox would be full of junk mail.
