Trying to understand FP+

Can someone tell me if I am understanding this correctly. This is my first time with FP+ as I haven't been to Disney since 2007. I made my reservations late so I did not get the best FP times. My time for the Mine Train is not until 10:50 PM, so that means I will not be able to pick any other FP times because you can't pick another one until you use your 3? Anyone have any strategies to get around that? Will I even need a FP at that time of night?

Correct on not getting a 4th until mine train is done.

You could try and switch the time to earlier.

We like RD and maybe midday you could enjoy resort time depending on your overall itinerary.

Another solution--RD Mine train and then move the mine train FP to something else earlier.

Did you try to change the times for your FP+? You're presented with 3 options when you initially book, but once you pick one of those options you can manually go in and change times.

Even though Disney calls the options presented your "best options" I've found that's hardly ever the case.

Yes, I check all the time for a new time and it says there are no other times available. Maybe if we get there right when the gates open and go right to the Mine Train we won't have to wait that long and I can just cancel the FP for it.

As far as changing times--try changing one attraction at a time. Not sure when you are traveling. But it would be unusual that nothing could be moved depending upon what you have and the date.

We will be at MK March 16th. I have Peter Pan's flight and Big Thunder Mountain in the late morning and Mine Train at 10:50 pm, I keep trying to change the Mine Train one but it says not alternate times available.

Okay. For that, RD standby is not that bad so long as it is not an EMH morning. I would strive to hit that first and if successful, change mine train to a different attraction -- perhaps one of the other mountains. (To get a better time, you will likely need to change the attraction first and then try to move it earlier.)
