The day of the marathon (Sunday January 10, 2010) it was frigid at WDW. As Kathy and the crew had said on the e-mail show, there was a frost and it was hard on the vegetation.

I was at the Animal Kingdom at rope drop (taking photos of the Marathoners) and was diverted due to portable heaters. I took a couple pictures of the attempts to warm up the trees.

They set up visqueen enclosures and blew hot air in. This set-up was utilized across the park until after I left AK at 10:45.

It was cold enough that the cast members had to ask the guests to step away from the heaters.

Wow, must be cheaper to keep the plants warm than replace them? Not something you see every trip :thumbsup2

I'm guessing that some of these trees were imported from other countries like Africa, or very valuable.

It's funny you should post these pictures Todd. When we took the Sunrise Sarari this past Dec 31st we were shown and told of a large tree that is backstage that can be seen outside the park. It's actually a 180ft cell tower that's made to look like a giant tree. Disney uses this large tree made of medal (cell tower) for cast member communications at the Animal Kingdom and surrounding areas. You'd never really notice it unless you were told about it. I would have snapped a photo of it while we were backstage, but no photos were allowed. You can see it from 192 if you know to look for it. It does sort of stick out when you see it, but since it's painted green it blends in with the landscape.

Thanks for the photos. :)

I can't help but see that. Its something that you can't help but see once you know its there. Like the arrow in the FedEx logo.

We always laugh when we see the fake trees on property. Once someone points them out to you they are very obvious. :)
