Trying to return to DLR in December…

I am trying to return to DLR once again for the holidays! One problem though… I have a lot of other windows to chop out. Apparently trying to get to there from AZ is a nightmare since I have some other members in my party that want to try heading to the Grand Canyon (which is honestly not that amazing in my view). One member though kind of leans in the same view as me… ITS TOO MUCH! I’m trying to keep it exclusively within SoCal as part of a DLR return, potentially in San Diego which I haven’t visited since 2013 and keep getting shut out of multiple times as of recent.

Let me know if there are any ideas or suggestions that could help aid in this setup. Thanks!

I'm a little unclear on what the dynamics are in this situation. Is your party your family? If so, are some of them kids? If not, are you all traveling together in the same vehicle or are you separate parties wanting to share a trip?

If you all have to stay together, then I say whoever originated/planned/arranged things should have the main say on what's involved and full say if that person is also paying for it. If someone wants to see the Grand Canyon (which I think ought to be seen at some point), they can do that another time or take their own car and go there first if they are driving separately.

I agree with you that tying too many things into one trip can lead to overload, not to mention extra expenses.

Another thing I do have to factor is that one of the fam members is not that keen with the altitude in the Grand Canyon. This is a factor that I am trying to use to ultimately remove the GC and eventually just shift exclusively to San Diego/DLR.

Not to worry, this is super duper early in scripting!

I think the Grand Canyon deserves it's own trip and so does Disneyland. It seems like it would be hard to combine the 2. On my last Disneyland trip we took a day to go to San Diego and it was fun. Lots of driving that day, though. If I did it again I'd spend 1 or nights in San Diego before heading to Anaheim.

I might just try to axe the Grand Canyon and replace it with San Diego. Besides, I do feel it’s much better to do it that way since it’s easier to just fly to San Diego (my local airport has nonstop service for cheap). We tried doing that last time but I had to talk them out for logistics’ sake. Plus, I hear Perry the Platypus snuck off to the zoo down there.

Have they seen the Grand Canyon before? Will they have a chance to do a separate trip if they don't see it this time? We saw the Grand Canyon and Disneyland for the first time on the same trip and I loved the combo.

They haven’t seen it yet… but I do have to return once again to the altitude sickness. Not everyone in my party is up for this type of adventure.

Unless you are there to " experience" the canyon itself, by that I mean, hiking, camping, etc., I find it to be much ado about nothing. It's a hassle to get there, it's expensive, and I just didn't get it. It's overcrowded. After living in AZ in younger years, I would finally tell relatives to do it either coming or going, but count me out.
Each to their own....

I would agree that the GC is best experienced if you stay at least a few days and plan ahead. We did a road trip one summer and visited several places in AZ. We stayed in a hotel outside the park and took the Grand Canyon Railway in and spent 3 or 4 nights at a hotel inside the park. We didn't try to do too much and limited our exploration to one specific area. Our girls were about 10, 10, and 13 at the time and they loved it! We hiked a lot and were in awe of the spectacular views. There is a lot more than what we saw and did, but it was just one segment of our trip. I would count it as a must-see if you have the chance to go, but I wouldn't add it on to a DL trip.

Agreed! We went when I was younger and I was totally unimpressed, as were my parents. It was cool for like 20 minutes, then we were sort of over it. We had no desire to try to hike or camp in the area so it was sort of a one and done. My DH was asking if it's "worth it" (he's never been), and I actually joked (like MonocularVision) that we can just see it at Disneyland. 😂

I am factoring the Disneyland Railroad into my potential script for sure… may be a good draw in.

Additionally, I don’t plan on park hopping unlike what I did last time I was in Disneyland, so that saves everyone the extra Lightning Lane costs. Rope drop and early scripting is gonna make the standbys more bearable…
