Trying to get DH to move to....

How can I talk DH into moving to Orlando, more specific Celebration? We both LOVE LOVE LOVE WDW and living near the parks would be wonderful. We BOTH (love) warm weather and the sun. He is a lawyer, so I am sure he could find work, but I think he'd have to take a year of American law? Any US lawyers out there that could help?

I am a teacher, so I am sure I'd have no problem

After our first trip to WDW I was set on getting DH a job at the Reedy Creek Fire Dept., and had he not had to take extra tests and have different certifications I think he would had went.. But then I think if I lived so close would I love it so much or would I be bothered by the traffic and people everywhere?

First, let me say that I love living in Florida. I live five minutes from MK and ten minutes from DTD. That being said, do realize that real life goes on even when you live near WDW. People work and find they have very little time to spend at the parks. Living nearby, you tend to hear a lot more negatives about Disney. Sadly to say, many are true.

Before making your decision, please check out the salary for teachers in this area. Teacher pay is much lower here than in many areas of the country.

I know I'm sounding negative and I don't really want to. I just want to be realistic. It is great being able to run over to a park when time allows. I love being able to stroll around DTD. Unfortunately, it is very hard to find the time even living so close. I will be retiring at the end of May and hope to finally have the time to visit the parks more often. Living her is great, but many people think that moving her will make their lives a continuous pixie dust experience. Just realize that this might not be the case.

If I could live anywhere I would also live in Celebration also. I think it is the most perfect beautiful town I have ever seen in my life! The last vacation (before dd) we leisurely started everyday with a coffee from Max's and sat in the rockers at the lake in Celebration. Soooooooooo relaxing and the houses are just beautiful. I hope your dream comes true to move there!

Have you visited in the summer? DH and I thought we'd maybe retire to FL (in the far future) and work at WDW. We go at least every other year and love it. But last year was the first time we were there in the summer, and stayed part of the trip off property. OH MY!! We encountered bugs I never want to see again. In the parks, I'm sure they spray like crazy, but maybe not in Celebration.

We actually stayed at a state park that is pretty much nestled right in Orlando. and had bears! Which was cool. But the bugs were not.

Did I mention I don't like bugs? Especialy the 3inch flying thing that came in my car window and was knocked out when it hit me. As I was trying to find it, it started moving again. I jumped out of the car. Luckily, DH could hear my panic and almost had the car stopped. Which was fortunate, because I was disembarking regardless.

Anyway, we decided we don't want to live there. (they have Jerrasic Park BUGS)

I HATE bugs as well! Chances of DH & I moving there are slim to none. We will probably ( in like 35 years once we retire) live down there in the winter months (Nov-April) and the other 6 months back home, a nice combo. But that's getting ahead of myself- considering I am only 25!!

My husband and I have the same idea...live in Celebration for the Winter months...work for Disney and live here in the summers...I don't know if this will really happen, but it's fun to think about!!!

The bugs ARE gross...Palmetto bugs are the WORST. UGH!

Um, what country are you citizens of? In the US, all attorneys are required to pass the bar examination of the state in which they intend to practice. The FL bar exam is a rather grueling one if you didn't attend law school in FL. My DH passed it 3 yrs. ago, after practicing elsewhere in the US for 16 years -- he spent approx. 20 hrs./week for about 15 months studying for it. http://www.floridabarexam.org/

To teach, you would need to hold the equivalent of a US Bachelors degree in Education, and pass the FL state teacher's certification examinations. http://www.fldoe.org/edcert/foreign.asp

That's actually pretty low for where I live! We bought our house for about that amount almost 10 years ago. It's now worth about twice that! I love looking at housing prices in other parts of the country. It's always interesting to compare them with our area (San Francisco Bay Area - some of the highest housing prices in the country but our weather is awesome!).

You do realize that Celebration is by in large, not owned by Disney any more? Don't know if that matters to you or not. DH and I took a driving tour thru the town on our last visit. It was very quiet (I was hoping they were still piping music in on main street!)

I also hate bugs, but really haven't had a problem living in the Orlando area. The bug you described was most likely a palmetto bug. There are huge and really gross. When I first moved to Orlando, there was a large undeveloped area of pine trees behind my home. I would encounter palmetto bugs in my garage. I'd also see huge spiders. Since they cleared the woods and built more homes, I've not seen a palmetto bug or any large bug for that matter. I have a lawn/exterminator company that treats my yard quarterly and the inside of the hourse every six months. I rarely see any kind of bug in my house. Most of the time, if one gets in, it is a mosquito.

So, the number of bugs you see in Orlando is directly proportionate to the wooded/swampy areas nearby. That being said, the lovebugs are gross. They are everywhere a couple of months of the years. That are even bad on WDW property during those months. They don't tend to get in the house (unless you leave the doors standing open), and they won't hurt you. There are just a lot of them. Fortunately, they are only around during late spring and early fall.

Well if the housing price isn't bad, then factor in:
Home owners insurance
Houses on top of each other
very strict covenant (what color your house is, is your lawn properly taken care of (your not allowed dead grass EVER!), etc. etc etc
very touristy, lots of traffic


I personally love Celebration and spend quite a bit of time there. My children go to the schools, play sports, attend church, shop, dine, bank etc.

My DH is a welder by trade and we couldn't have his equipment trailer there nor could he use the garage as a shop.

We live just on the outskirts.
