#1 I forgot to format the new disc!:scared1:

#2 When I put the card in the card reader and try to download I get an I/O error code. When I try to view in Windows Media Player it says it cannot read. I went back to the camera to see what format my video was shot in and it shows AVI.

Help! Can this video be saved and downloaded? I took a video of youngest DS's band show tonight!

What kind of camera are you using? Do you have Windows Movie Maker?

I think it can be saved. Are you going directly from the camera to the computer using the cable provided, or are you using a card reader? If you are going direct, try getting a card reader and using that. I had the same problem with one of the videos I did on my S2IS. All the other videos went fine from camera to computer but one kept giving me an error until I plugged the SD card into my printer (which has card readers built in) and it worked. It took forever, but it worked. I assume this video plays fine on the camera? That would be exactly how it happened for me. Played fine on the camera, wouldn't download from the camera but would download from a card reader. Never got a good explaination for this one.

It's the Canon S5 and I did use a card reader. It was a rather long video (1.1 GB) so I thought maybe that was the problem. I can watch it fine on playback mode on the camera and if I use the cord I can watch it on the TV. Now getting it from the card to the computer is another story!:confused3
I did get the instruction manual out and found, on page 53 of the Advanced camer user guide, it states: "Quick Time is required to play back movies )data type: AVI/Compression method: Motion JPEG) on a computer (Windows 2000 only), but I have Windows XP!:confused3
Oh, well, I'll try downloading again.

Hmm... Maybe try going direct from the camera then? :confused3 I don't think Quicktime has anything to do with it. I play everything in Windows Media Player and I don't even have Quicktime loaded. Maybe try connecting the camera and using explorer to find the file on the camera and do a copy/paste? I'm sure it can be downloaded somehow. I don't think that the S2 allowed a video to be that big, but I don't think the size of the video should matter. Maybe I'm wrong about that.

Yea!!! I finally got it to work!

I went to Canon's web site and looked around until I found the answer.

I connected the camera to the computer (like you suggested, Andy) and ZoomBrowserEx kicked in and directed me thru the whole process! I am so relieved to have it downloaded!

Awesome! I'm glad it worked out for you. I remember it was not fun when that happened to me so I know what you were going through.

That sounds pretty bizarre. When using a card reader, your memory card is just a removable drive and you could be able to copy files to and from it with no problem. 1.1 gigs should certainly be no cause for issues.

I'm not sure what you mean by "format the new disc" - there's no discs involved, and you don't need to format a memory card (you can, but they come pre-formatted, and pretty much everything uses the same format.)

Whatever error message you're getting is probably a Windows one, and we'd need the exact error message to get more info on it.

Also, QuickTime is most certainly not required, and you can usually assume that anything that works in Win2000 is fine for WinXP (there are exceptions, but they're rare)... AVI is technically the "container" and the video format is "Motion JPEG", FWIW. AVIs can contain videos in many different formats, which is why sometimes you'll find that you can play some but not others. FFDshow is a nice free download to get you the ability to play the majority of videos out there today.
