Trying to decide - Male or Female Puppy

Our female cocker is much more of a baby than our males ever were. She also loves her toys were the males couldn't have cared less about stuffed animals.

I prefer male animals regardless of cat, dog, etc. I've almost always had an easier time training males and find them to be more cuddly and easy going than females.

Also the surgery to have them fixed costs quite a bit less if that is an issue for you.

Funny isn't it? In the dog world, the women are the dominant and aggressive ones while the men are more docile and loving. Yet we choose their sex based on our own human traits. Of course, there are exceptions to every rule and I've known many loving, gentle females of all breeds. I've also known some highly aggressive males.

I preferred females until we bought our Standard Poodles. Standard Poodle males are much more affectionate than females. My best friend has the littermate sister to my youngest Standard Poodle Winslow and she is not affectionate at all. I love my boys.

I guess it really depends on the breed.

We have a golden retriever and chose a female because they are smaller. She is the most loving, sweetest companion imaginable. She's been fixed so no problems there. And she was so easy to train.

We have male and female retrievers (siblings). My male is more obedient and loving. My female is independent, dominant and has a mind of her own (she's a bit naughty too).

I've heard that with males it's important to get them neutered as soon as possible to avoid any agressive behaviors.

I think it would depend on whether you will neuter or spay. Unneutered males can be VERY aggressive, unspayed females can make VERY big messes (and gather large, unwanted crowds of unneutered males) while in heat. Also, it is considerably less money to neuter a male than it is to spay a female. Having been a vet tech working with lots and lots of animals, and having owned both male and female dogs at different times, I can't honestly say which sex is more "cuddly" or "loving", as I firmly believe that as long as your not getting a "puppy mill" puppy (where lots of inbreeding happens), then almost always, nurture wins out over nature. Also, socialization is paramount when you get a puppy. It's been my experience that purebreds (of any breed) are more high-strung "noodles" (if you will), so PLEASE make sure you check any and all references of the breeder you deal with. Also, purebreds are more prone to genetic disorders (different breeds are associated with different diseases i.e. golden retreivers commonly have skin disorders or "hot spots", cocker spaniels are prone to glaucoma or other eye diseases, etc.) so you might want to consider getting a mixed breed. HTH - congratulations and good luck with your decision!!

We are definitely looking at a mixed breed......such as a cockapoo or shihpoo.

we have an absolutely wonderful male golden retriever and i wanted to get him a buddy..so we got a female....well it was the biggest mistake i have ever made..she was so dominate...her personality was so off from his...she was horrible to train...so needless to say we had to find her another home....

We always had female animals (always spayed) until recently. I was afraid of getting a male dog (he will be neutered) but it was worry over nothing. Both my dogs are sweet - I have rat terriers- but in our case the female is more dominant and active and the male is more sweet and cuddly. Quite the opposite from what I expected though it's not hard to love either one
