I posted a number of questions yesterday... and here are my current thoughts... I still need help LOL
We are now trying to decide if we want 300 or 450 points... and assuming we want 450... how should we buy them.
First major question: Am I better off buying 450 SSR points right away, or should I buy 150 first, followed by 300 additional points as a current owner? I would hate to buy 450 now, only to find out that we could have bought 150 at $90, and then bought the next 300 at a lower rate.
Second major question: If we were to get 450... are we better off getting them from the same resort (presumably SSR) and same use year? Before you can answer, I probably need to describe my planned usage.
My wife and I plan to make trips about every 1-3 years... spending about two weeks with the kids (college age) in a 2BR. It would take about 600 points per trip to accomplish this. We would probably travel two years in a row... and then take a year off so that we could get two vacations out of each annual pass. Lets assume for sake of argument that the only time we can align schedules of all 5 of us is during the summer... so we might go in August, followed by a June/July vacation.
Part of me wants to get just 300 points at SSR, and the other 150 at BWV. The problem as I see it is that by fracturing my pool of points... it makes it harder to get a "big reservation?. For example, I could use 300 of my points at 11 months... and the next 150 would be tied up until 7 months... unless I wanted to switch units part way through the vacation.
I could alternate using the two resorts for each of the subsequent year's vacations... so one year use my SSR points, and the next year use my BWV points. Assuming I have 150 annual points at BWV... I could have up to 450 for use by banking and borrowing... however, 450 is not enough to get 2 weeks in a 2BR... so this seems like a problem.
Another possibility would be to have a big family reunion someday (when we presumably have grandchildren)... and then we would want to get a Grand Villa for 2 weeks using 3 years worth of points (banked and borrowed). Once again, this does not work great if the points are split across a couple of resorts.
I also thought about splitting the points into two buckets of 225 each (instead of 3 X 150)... but that does not support one of the reasons that I would even go to 450... so that each of my 3 kids could have an individual contract someday.
One last thought... We live on the west coast... so lots of small weekend/short stays are impractical... we would usually want to visit for a longer stay... at least 1 week, and usually 2 weeks.
I would appreciate any thoughts, opinions, or advice.
