Thanks for all of the feedback. We are planning to stay in a moderate resort (Coronado Springs) in May 2011, we'll take the tour and see how we feel once we're back home and can discuss it for a while.
I guess I wanted to jump all over DVC for a few reasons: take advantage of one visit right away rather than pay cash for a room, stay in a deluxe resort and take advantage of the favourable Canadian dollar right now.
Book a cash stay directly from Disney or rent points from a member at the Villa you would like to be an owner at. Research each resort online before hand. Now you can use the bank/borrow/use method, and so only commit yourself to a stay every 3rd year if you find DVC is for you. This way you are only paying minimum maintenance fees. If you need more points later you can add on or rent points from another owner.
My goodness! It didn't take even one trip to know that I would love Disney!
First of all, I love theme parks! Second of all, I could tell from the pictures that Disney is kept a lot better than Six Flags and I love Six Flags (at least I did until after a few trips to WDW which put Six Flags to shame.). Finally, how many theme parks have such amazing hotels and restaurant options?
The question of whether or not I would love WDW was a no-brainer to me and perhaps it is to the opening poster.
The only question for you to ask is would you like to use the money for this trip as a down payment or would you like to explore the different DVC properties before you decide?
By the way, renting points is a great way to try out DVC. We had a great experience and I have only heard of one incident where a renter had a problem, so don't be put off by the idea that it may be too risky. Just speak with the individual that you are considering renting from and see how comfortable you feel with him or her before you commit. Also remember that the member will be the only one who can speak with member services considering the reservation.

And across these boards I read stories all the time from people who go to WDW even though "...it's not DH's thing" or "...I have to drag DW as she is not a Disney person".
Sounds like us. My Husband doesn't minde a visit a year, but that's about it. So I went just with friends in May, then we both go together in October. We also have a trip planned for September 2011. As this leaves us with some points, I brought up the idea of going again in Jan. 2011. He wasn't exactly thrilled, but then I said: "How about a Non-Park stay? Just 3 days Kidani Village, pool- and resort hopping, good food and relax. Then I added another 3 days at Vero Beach and when the confirmations arrived in the mail yesterday, he was already getting excited... So it's just a question of how you "sell" the vacation to your non-Disney loving partner.
