I am kinda blow away. We usually go in the summer every few years and am familiar with booking tricks. I never have problems getting a room for the middle of summer. We usually do moderate or deluxe hotels on Disney property. Late April is supposed to be a slow time. What I am finding now is that I can't get a normal room at the Polynesian (only has Villas available). The contemporary is totally booked unless I spend $1K. The cheapest place is the Grand Floridian which blows me away.

Let's use these dates for discussion's sake: April 17-22 (chick in and out dates).

What is going on here?

As for the Grand Floridian, all I can get is "Outer Bldg - Lagoon View". Is this any good? Some reviews say that they need to remodel these outer buildings. I wish I could stay i nteh main building but I don't think that this is in the cards.

Im seeing the Poly standard view (not villa- 2 queen beds) available with the package rate- $2900 without tickets

I went under the "special offers" tab on the disney website and was able to book a standard view at the Poly for $533 per night for 2 adults and 2 kids. The special offer rate was unavailable though.

At the Contemporary, tower theme park view is available for $627.

I didn't try any further than those. Would those be suitable for you? I would try a search again.

Sometimes the site goes wonky, and nothing works. I would try again, because like others have said, I see stuff at Poly, Contempo, and GF for less than $650 a night. Granted, there's not a ton of availability in every category, and some categories are completely booked; however, I see some free rooms.

Wait? Free rooms in the monorail resorts? Sign me up! :p

FWIW April 18-22 (or 16 to 24 if you include weekends) is school vacation week for Massachusetts and Maine.

(Annually, the 3rd Monday in April is Patriots Day - not the 9/11 one, but the American Revolution (Lexington/Concord 1776 one) - and most if not all the public school have the entire week off (annually - not just this year). I meet alot of people from New Zealand when we go then - perhaps they also have a break mid/late April. And maybe other New England states, I don't know.)

Star Wars marathon is through Sunday April 17, so that could be booking up resorts a bit too?

It is less crowded than our other vacation week - Presidents Day in Feb. - but the parks are not empty. I'm also having a tough time finding a deluxe resort with a discount for this week. HTH.

I have stayed in the outer buildings and I thought that my rooms were fine.

The Poly took a lot of rooms out of stock when they remodeled for DVC and the WL is under construction now. That leave just two resorts that probably do have plenty of open occupancy and they are pricy ones.

Many parts of New England have their spring vacation that week.
