OK, I am in the process of finding out if there are even rooms available during my dates....but I have a question...

How do I do this transaction, and trust that we will have a place to stay when we get there? Trust that someone won't just walk away with our money?

Yes, yes, I read the postings about "buyer beware", but it just seems so successful, I haven't seen any neg feedback on anyone.

Are there any old timers here who have been a sure bet that keep renting out points?

I have been on both sides renting to people and renting from people. It is somewhat uncomfortable sending $ to a stranger.

However, what I find comfort sometimes is actually talking to someone on the phone, you can get a feel for how the person is. Also, you can ask to see if he/she can provide you with references. Also, there are people who post regularly on the DisBoard, you can use the search function to take a look at their posts and see if you can get a feel for what the person is.

We are leaving in a few days to stay at BWV from renting someone else's points. At times, I was wondering exactly what you are thinking too. But I spoke to the guy and I think he is a very nice and trusting person (hopefully I don't sound too naive:D ), and I sure hope everything is OK.

In addition, you should be given DVC's phone # so that you can call in yourself to confirm the reservation.

Good luck and have a great trip!!!:p

Trust is a big part.

Some suggestions.

Ask for references. Many renters have rented before and can provide them.

Talk to the person on the phone.

Always get a copy of the confirmed reservation before you send any money.

I have rented many times before and am always happy to do just about whatever it takes to make the renter feel comfortable. I can provide references also.

Thanks for the quick response! I really like the references idea. "alisbarc" do you have any points to rent? :Pinkbounc

toulousaine: I'd also suggest you read the past posts by the person you are renting from. You will get a real feel for the person by doing this. I rented to a few people and made sure to do a search of their past posts to learn as much about them as I could. I realize the search feature is down now but if it ever comes back, this is a great way to get to know someone on both sides of the deal.

toulousaine -

it's a tough call on this issue. I have rented to people approx. 10 times. I did it on ebay for a while (all money within 7 days and total trust on their end) but now that I found the boards I do it mostly through here. I have started asking for a $100 refundable deposit if your date isn't available before I make a ressie. This is because many people have you invest a lot of time and hours and switch dates many times only to cancel in the long run. I than e-mail the ressie # as soon as I make the ressie. This can be confirmed by calling the hotel front desk directly. I than get a 50% deposit immediately and the balance approx. 60 days before.

If the rental is at the end of my use year where I can end up losing if they cancel and don't pay the balance I will sometimes ask for the balance sooner.

I too will provide references for anyone who want as well as my home and cell number.

Many people I have rented to a help with their trip planning questions and I feel we form an e-friendship.

The flip side is....I have had 3 renters back out at various stages which sometimes makes me more leery with the next renter. It is a tough call and I guess like the others said, it comes down to us all being human.

Good luck
Sandy

Like InstImpres says, there are concerns on both sides of the rental. Not only do renters worry about whether or not they will have a reservation when they get to WDW, but the person renting the points has to worry that the renter will back out too late for them to do anything with their points.

I have rented my points, and I follow the same procedure that First Impres uses, with one difference: I go thru PayPal to receive my money, so that the person renting my points can pay by credit card. That way, the renter has an extra measure of security, and if something happens, they can always use the charge back option guaranteed by every credit card.

HI toulousaine

If you will give me your email I will send you some information and what I have available. My home resort is BWV. My email address is dwbarc@aol.com.

One other suggestion. Ask the person for their ebay name. If they have one you can go to ebay and check their rating. Gives you some level of comfort and another perspective.
