Do you have a close friend or family member you love who use cuss words every other word when speaking with you and others.I do, a friend I've had for 30 years if it were not for this he would be the perfect friend.I have spoken with him several times and he says I didn't know I was cussing. He does not cuss to be crude or mean I think he has done it for so long it's like a habit he can't break. Can you offer any suggestions on how to help my friend break the cussing habit.

I don't have any advice. My dad does this too. He even says the same thing, that he wasn't cussing. He honestly doesn't even realize what he says anymore he says it so much. I hate it!

As soon as he says a curse word, tell him he owes you a penney, dime or nickel :) Then send all money to me :) OH I like that idea.

I wish I could offer a good suggestion.

I don't think that you can change anyone if they don't want to be changed. If this friend wants to stop cursing (personal pet peeve of mine, I cannot STAND the word "cuss" ;) ) then you should brainstorm ideas. If not, accept your friend for who they are. You said it yourself, he is the perfect friend except for his cursing. No one is perfect, and part of being a good friend is accepting their imperfections. If he isn't being malicious when he curses, and if he hasn't come to you in order to "help" his cursing problem, then I think that it is a shortcomming that you can overlook.

Sorry if I am reading this the wrong way.

Tell them to watch spongebob! LOL

Seriously, I had a similar problem (although probably not to that extent) and after watching Spongebob Squarepants on Nickelodeon, I've found that I replace those words with sayings like "barnacles!" or "fish paste!" just like they do in the show. :) I guess the intent is the still same as when I said those other words, but it certainly much less offensive to others.

i'm with evil princess on this one...

Is this a regional thing? When I lived in Louisiana everyone said 'cuss' but here in Texas they say 'curse'???

I say curse as well.. I can't stand that word cuss either...

It may be a regional thing, I'm in the North east.

Hmmm ... curse and cuss... they mean two different things to me. To me, cuss is to say some secular expletive. and curse is related to religious meaning.

I have relatives who cuss/curse in Spanish - a lot, and so whenever I go to El Paso, I have to clean my mind again when I come home.

I try not to let it bother me anymore.

I have a cousin who uses very vulgar, curse (cuss) words but, since his DD (1yo) was born, we are ALL reminding him that his DD's first words might be those of his own and, would he like hearing his precious DD utter those same words? I doubt it!!!

I would make general 'kids are around' kinda comments and, see if that helps the ADULT curtail his 'potty mouth'.

Good Luck!

I say cuss, curse to me is something someone that knows voodoo would hex you with.;)

My best friend cusses worse than any sailor ever thought about doing. I cuss, but very rarely. My best friend knows there are a couple of cuss words that really bother me (taking the Lord's name in vain is a big no no, imo). If she gets carried away with her cussing, sometimes I'll repeat the cuss word back at her and it startles her. She doesn't cuss much around me for awhile after that.:teeth: Sometimes she tells me it bothers her how much she cusses, but she says it's a habit she can't stop. I told her that her cussing doesn't bother me as much as she might think it does. 1. It's not like she cusses around me and presents a facade towards others as being a sweet and innocent who never cusses (she'll be the first to tell you she's not sweet and innocent;), even if she has to say a few choice 4 and 5 letter words to make sure you know she's not;)). 2. It's not like she's cussing AT me (which she says she'd never do) 3. I know it's a habit for her that she can't break. It would be like me trying to stop saying slang words or to keep me from saying Sonic.:teeth:

what I want to know is who is the goofball that decided certain words were so "bad"... it's just ridiculous to me.
