I wondered if anyone else struggles with sleep while away and do you take anything for it? I plan to ask my Dr before we go. At home I sleep like a rock but on vacation I am up a lot and it limits energy levels which in WDW I do need a lot of. TIA for any tips

I always have trouble sleeping in places other than my own home and my own bed. When I travel I take melatonin and benadryl with me. I always try the melatonin first (the first night) and hopefully it works. If it doesn't then the next night I switch to benadryl. Benadryl always knocks me out. I have my doctor's blessing for use of both. Both are fairly harmless.

I take unisom. Works well for me with no "hangover" type feeling, but I know some people get that, so maybe test it out at home first?

At home, I sleep with a ''white noise'' machine. But I don't pack it when we come to Disney. Instead, I turn on the fan in the bathroom. It doesn't make it feel like home, but you may be amazed in the difference it makes when trying to get to sleep. There's just something about that white noise that helps to drown out all the sounds that keep me awake when away from home.

I actually bring my own pillow!!

I like my memory foam pillow and always get a neckache when I sleep in hotels...so nowadays I pretty much bring my pillow everywhere I go....even for overnight trips in 4 star hotels! (Hubby on the other hand loves hotel pillows and sleeps much better there!)

It's a little wacky....but there you go. I just sleep better and am comfier so it's worth the hassle of bring it along.

As for actually sleeping in WDW....I don't do a whole lot of that. I'm just too hyped for that. I just accept it and let my excitement carry me along. Last trip I barely slept for the first few days. On arrival night, I didn't go to bed until 3am and then tossed and turned until 6:30am when I hopped out raring to go. I did crash at dinnertime though and by 6pm, we headed back to the hotel and I was out by 7/8pm. To be fair...I was up again between 12 and 4am.

It's just how it is and I try not to get too worked up about it. I head back to the hotel when I need a nap or need to get to bed at a decent hour and just deal with it when I'm up in the middle of the night. I just get too excited there...although after a few days in, I'm usually sleeping much, much better.

Thanks, I have done benedril but maybe ill try unisom. I always feel like the air is on its too cold then it clicks off and its hot as heck then on again.

I cant go back to room and nap or rest when I feel like it with little kids, those days of sleep when I feel like it are long gone;)

I usually take Tylenol PM helps with the sore feet and legs and knocks me out! My DH takes it as well.

Ok, I struggled with this for years and found some tips to help me. Now I am a good sleeper while away.

Cut the caffine down if you drink this. Make sure you are used to running on no caffine before the trip. Because when you go thru withdrawl (and you do) you can't hardly move.
But if you can do this it will be SUCH a help to you.

Be careful with sleeping aids if you are not used to them they will wipe you out. This happened to me.
Basically all over the counter sleeping aids use diphrehidramine (benedryl) as the sleeping agent in them. So no reason to use $$ brands when plain benedryl is what it is. Just make sure you function well after taking these, I don't and it can ruin a trip.

Unwind when you get back to the hotel. Take a shower, really warm if you can. As your body cools back down it will automatically get tired.
If you can learn meditation that is wonderful! It will help you relax into a better sleep.

A white noise machine works wonders for my friend. They make travel size ones so that may be another option.

Good luck and have fun.

Honestly, I'm the same way on vacation and the best thing that works for me is to have a few cocktails (beer, in my case) immediately before going to bed. When I do this, I will sleep soundly through the night and wake up rested.

If I have a few drinks, I can fall alseep but as soon as they wear off I wake up.
Benedryl doesnt bother me but it also doesnt keep me asleep. I only take a tiny amount so maybe Ill try a little more.
White noise, I used the fan in bathroom but it doesnt help.
Thanks for ideas

Maybe you just need to go more often so it feels more like home. :lmao:

Seriously, I really hope you can find some way to get your much needed rest while visiting The World.

Here's some pixie dust... hope it helps!pixiedust:

Don't eat, drink caffeine or alcohol within 3 hours of bedtime. Don't watch TV in bed. Take deep breaths to relax and just let your thoughts go... Reading also helps but keep the lights down. Lights prevent the production of melatonin in your system. You might try taking some melatonin or htp5. You can find those at any drug or health store.

Good luck!

I take one Benadryl about two hours before bed, which helps with sleep (it's the thing that they put in Tylenol PM that makes you sleep).

I also use a white noise machine - it's wonderful at masking little background sounds in an unfamiliar environment.

Hi! As a PP said, try Melatonin. It doesn't have any side effects (you can get the same drowsiness from a cup of cherries).

Also, as another Poster stated-I sleep so much better with my own pillow-although it isn't always practical to take it if you are flying.

Good luck and sweet dreams!

Sleep, who needs sleep when you are at WDW!!! Seriously, I sleep way less when I'm on vacation because I don't want to waste any time or miss anything. I have way more energy. One day I made DH start EH at AK (on the bus to AK by 7am) then we left at noon and went to HS for afternoon and Fantasmic, then headed to Epcot for Illuminations and EH...stayed till the park closed at 1:00 (almost 1:30 am before we left Epcot) and didn't get back to hotel till 2:00am. Who needs sleep??? Ahhhh, but I do use Tylenol pm to help those aching tootsies and sleep a few hours now and then!:thumbsup2

The Vegas approach, I like it! What happens at Disney....

ambian, it won't work forever but for a week trip you fall asleep before u can count to 10. I had to take it in the hospital waiting for a major surgury.

You certainly could ask a doctor for a low dose of Lunesta or Ambien, but they very well may turn you down or at most only give you a few pills if you say you're only using it on vacation. Also don't be tempted to take any medication that like from a friend to take with you or try to take it through security without a prescription bottle with your name on it. I'm not sure about Lunesta, but Ambien is a controlled substance. It's in a class of drugs called benzodiazipines (what Janice Dickenson is/was addicted to for anyone that watched Celebrity Rehab). It's a hyponotic sedative. I have very very very bad insomnia and take the maximum prescribable dose every night. I've taken it for 3 or 4 years now. I'm only going on about it because anyone taking it should realize it isn't something to play around with, it is a full on drug. Also not everyone reacts the same way to it. When I first started taking it, I fell asleep in 20 minutes, which since I was used to laying in bed for hours before sleeping even with the other med I was on, was great. Now it takes me about an hour and a half to fall asleep, since I've built up such a tolerance to it. If you read the warnings that come with it, you'll find that Ambien can make you very dizzy, it can cause hallucinations, and it can make you sleepwalk among other things. Also after any type of repetitive use, it can cause withdrawl. If you only take a small dose for a short period of time you'd probably be fine, for me to stop it cold turkey I'd be one very sick little lady:sick:. You also really need to have the time to get 7-8 hours sleep like the commercials say. If I only get like 6 1/2 or 7 hours sleep, I feel nauseous the next day. You can also end up being very uncoordinated and drowsy, almost like a cough syrup "high" if you don't sleep enough with it. Just stuff to keep in mind.

I was very worried about falling asleep on the trip I just got back from, because the previous two trips, I ended up being awake from Sunday afternoon to Tuesday night. Yes you read that right. The last time I was awake for 52 hours, and let me tell you that doesn't feel very good. I always fly out on a Monday morning, so lets call them trips 1 and 2, I'd gotten up Sunday afternoon (I used to fall asleep around 4 am and get up about 1), packed, knew I had to get up early so I didn't take the Ambien, knowing I wouldn't be able to get enough sleep, so I was up Sunday into Monday, tried to sleep on the plane...didn't....tried to nap at the hotel...couldn't....came back from dinner and took the pill...and nothing. Did the front half of Epcot Tuesday and finally, each time, I'd finally be exhausted enough Tuesday night that I'd fall asleep. So needless to say, this time I figured that would happen again. I was up all night Sunday into Monday, as I expected, but since this time I was in a 1 bedroom villa at OKW rather than a normal room at POP, I sat in the jacuzzi for awhile figuring it'd help me relax, then I got out, took the Ambien and my other stuff and laid down to read, 20 minutes later and I was out. It was great. I ended up sleeping really well this past vacation and it was amazing, I was falling asleep within half an hour of laying down which just doesn't happen for me at home.

Anyway, I feel your pain, and I agree with a lot of the other posters suggestions. I can't vouch for how they work because they never worked for me but I'm a pretty extreme case. I just urge you and anyone that can get a script for Ambien to take it seriously and be cautious and aware with it.

I would never take anyone elses prescription for any reason.
I dont want to start with prescription anyway, just a mild otc med. I think its best to stick with benedryl. I had to take it when I was hospitalized on bed rest after 2 nights 3 days of laying awake in hospital bed unable to get up or walk around. I was feeling like I would lose my mind. I have to check with Dr on how much. I am small(108 lbs) so I dont want to feel crappy after.
THank you so much everyone.

We use a small white noise machine at home, and I used to bring it on all of our vacations. Now, there is an iphone app that is white noise, and I loaded it, plug in the phone, and instant white noise without having to pack anything additional! YAY! Btw, we use the rainstorm on the white noise machine. :) Good luck!
