Tropicana/Candy Cane Inn

What would you do?

I can get CCI Deluxe Room or Tropicana One Bedroom King (with kitchen) for only a 10 dollar difference.

Which would you go with?

If I remember right, it's just you and your daughter, right? Here are the things to consider:

Tropicana is closer than Candy Cane, so less walking. HOWEVER, Candy Cane does have a free shuttle which, when hit at the right time, takes away the need to have to walk at all.

Candy Cane has nicer (but smaller) rooms than Tropicana and a better pool.

Tropicana has the kitchen. Will you be using it for meals? They also have a convenience store right in the lobby. There's a 7-11 next door to the Candy Cane, so you'd have to walk a bit farther.

Tropicana has a McDonald's nearby; Candy Cane has a Subway.

Candy Cane has a really nice breakfast for free. Tropicana just has the basic donuts/pastry and coffee and juice.

I hope this all helps! Personally, I like the Candy Cane better, but Tropicana is certainly fine.

We stayed at the Tropicana for five nights last month and loved it. We much preferred it over the HoJo and the Park Inn which were the only other offsite places we had stayed. I think the Candy Cane looks wonderful, and it rates higher on most boards (namely this one and Tripadvisor). In fact I am not sure I have ever heard anyone who didn't like the Candy Cane. Yet, the Tropicana was so perfectly suited for us, super clean, recently remodeled rooms, okay breakfast (this is where the Candy Cane would probably be much better, their breakfast looks awesome), very nice, attentive staff and above all an INCREDIBLE location to Disneyland. Pool wise, they look about the same from the pictures I have seen of the Candy Cane's. Typical of older motels, ie, small, square pool; the Candy Cane's looks a bit more landscaped than the Tropicana's pool area. the Tropicana did have a really nice oversized hot tub and plenty of towels and chairs and a few chairs. The Candy Cane looks very charming and pretty but I also have to say the Tropicana had some nice landscaping and they were always having the staff out cleaning the windows/walkways, trimming the bushes. Something I wasn't prepared for. It didn't have grounds so to speak but they really had some nice touches that distracted from the parking lot feel. If you prefer to have a five minute walk from the turnstiles of Disneyland/DCA vs. a shuttle and if the kitchen is a biggie than I would think the Tropicana would be a great choice. We are onsite snobs but really were so satisfied and pleasantly surprised with the Tropicana that it really changed our thinking about staying onsite at Disneyland. And again, the Candy Cane has some incredible features that apparently everybody loves. I think either one would be a fine choice.

Another thing I just thought of, The Tropicana is just a couple of doors down from Mimi's which in an incredibly good restaurant. Pretty, nice atmosphere, really huge portions for a great price. We ate breakfast there in February and were amazed at how much cheaper it was than the parks. We have one here in Denver but I was surprised the one across the street from Disneyland had the same great prices. You can do take out there too. It really helps to have some nice dining choices besides the park so close to the hotel. There is also a place called Millie's right there too, I believe they will deliver to the nearby hotels for a fee and it also gets good reviews for breakfast/lunch/dinner.

The Candy Cane is great Never been to the Tropicana, just inside the lobby once for some reason. There's just something so...Disney-ish about CCI.

has anyone ever stayed here? i have not seen it talked about at all in brochures...it isn't even mentioned in the anaheim tourism bok....

i was wondering how far a walk it is from DL or if they have a shuttle....we are mebers of their discount club so we get a kid suite for $99/night inc breakfast....

if anyone has any addl info i would appreciate it...

I could see the La Quinta from the intersection of Harbor and Katella (the CCI is right up from that corner and the shuttle does U turn there). It was down aways- I could see the sign and know what it was, but it wasnt close to the corner (hope that makes some sense!). I know the CCI is slightly more then 1/2 mile, so I would say the LQ is about a mile. I do believe it is on the ART line. I know that there is an ART stop at the corner of Katella and Harbor.

We stayed there for 3 nights last week. We arrived around 12:30 pm and were allowed to check in early without being charged. The landscaping is very nice, lots of pretty flowers and bushes. The room was a good size. It fit two beds, a nightstand and a round table. The bathroom had a long counter and cupboards (like a sink area at home). It was clean. The water pressure wasn't great and the water was not HOT, seemed to be lukewarm during busy times. The beds were comfy pillow top style with 2 bed pillows and 3 decorative pillows. There was not much noise except the one morning we wanted to sleep in - I heard lots of excited chatter. I also heard that on the 2nd floor you could see the fireworks. We never at the hotel at that time so we didn't see the fireworks. The breakfast was good. They had several kinds of bagels,cream cheese, jelly, butter, COFFEE, tea, hot chocolate, orange juice, apple juice, muffins, pastries, apples, oranges and bananas. It worked well for us. I did not hear any excess noise (like people above me or next to me). We were on the 1st floor.

As far as the distance from Disneyland. It was about 2 city blocks. The shuttle runs on the 30 minutes and hour from the hotel and on the :15 and :45 from the park. We ended up missing the shuttle and walked most of the time. It really was not that far (even after a long day in the park we still walked, it beat sitting for 30 minutes for the next shuttle).

I'm sure if you didn't you would have posted it but just wanted your general thoughts. Did you walk home late down Harbor? Hope you had a WONDERFUL time

We walked down Harbor 2 nights (after 12 midnight). It was me, my DD 9 and her friend, also 9. I felt safe. There were other people out, it was not that far, and the street lights were on. It was well lit. We had a GREAT time! I want to go back again soon. My coworkers all think I am crazy. But I guess I am crazy, crazy for Mickey.

I agree....I walked back alone from DL to the CCI one night and with a girlfriend another night and didn't feel unsafe either time. There were lots of people around, even late at night, and plenty of street lights (plus, it isn't very far).
