I agree....welcome Alberto.
Fires are still smoldering 15 miles from me, all of Florida needs this rain maker.

Us too. We're right by the 192 fire and the winds changed and the smoke is now surrounding our apartments, the smells even getting inside now. I wish it would rain already and help put this thing out!

ugh! I'm 12 airmiles from there and could smell it when I went onto the lanai to watch Wishes Friday night. Of course I couldn't see a thing because it was all obliterated by the smoke. :( I smelled it Saturday morning, but not Saturday night--the wind had shifted. Then I smelled it again this morning when I took DH to the airport, but don't smell it at all now--just my neighbors yummy BBQ!

We got 1 1/2" of rain this afternoon and it was wonderful to see! I told my DH I almost felt like running outside and jumping in the puddles! At 50+! :rotfl: (That's what having no rain for days and days and days will do to you!)

I'm kind of worried though now about tornado warnings here tomorrow though as the 11 o'clock news said that's what they figured would probably happen if you were on the east side of the system - also the wind has picked up to 60 at the last report, so Alberto seems to be strengthening. Yuck.... :guilty:

I can remember during the hurricanes and having all kinds of tornado warnings along with it - my DH watched out the window that wasn't shuttered up, but I was a big chicken and I put on his motorcycle helmet and sat under the stairs in the closet (on the pile of suitcases!) until they passed. What a sight I must have looked like. ;)

Hope everyone stays safe in the next few days!

Some of you know I was doing my high school internship study with Tampa Bays 10. Here is my projected path and impacts based on NHC and models.

NONE OFFICAL!

We need the rain! Hi, Alberto, come by and stay a while-we want your rain!

One of the best links a Floridian can have.

Psst, went over to Lakeland yesterday, we had a douser over off of clubhouse, MIL in north end got a light rain, it never rained where I live and a friend was in Brandon getting soaked on. Weird rain cells yesterday!

Here is why even a "weak" tropical storm can be dangerous:

[font=Courier,Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif]POLK- 802 AM EDT MON JUN 12 2006 A TORNADO WARNING CONTINUES

Severe Weather Statement National Weather Service Tampa Bay Area - Ruskin FL 802 AM EDT Mon Jun 12 2006

Polk- 802 AM EDT Mon Jun 12 2006

... A Tornado Warning Continues For Central Polk County Until 815 AM EDT...

At 802 AM EDT National Weather Service Doppler Radar Indicated A Tornado 4 Miles East Of Bartow... Moving North At 25 Mph.

The Tornado Will Affect... Bartow. Eagle Lake.

This is why I tell people to think carefully about their trip to WDW if a storm is coming. HUrricanes might weaken as they reach Central Florida, but they can spawn many tornados that can do just as much, if not more damage.

Issued at: 8:15 AM EDT 6/12/06, expires at: 8:26 AM EDT 6/12/06

The tornado warning for central polk county expired at 815 am edt, At 815 am edt, national weather service radar indicated the tornado had dissipated, thus the warning has been allowed to expire.
Doppler radar indicated that heavy rain, small hail, and gusty winds were still possible from the thunderstorm.

OMG! And I totally missed the whole thing cause I was away from the computer. :rotfl:

Me thinks I'd better turn on the weather radio so I can catch those warnings. TS and Hurricanes worry me but Tornadoes scare me to death! :scared1: :faint:

Oh, I just wish this could have come a week earlier or a week later. One of my dad's fellow fire cheifs retired last month. The station for his retirement gift gave him a Land and Sea vacation for him, his wife and 2 granddaughters that he has custody of. This is a once in a lifetime trip for this family. They flew into Orlando yesterday and are set to cruise on Thursday.

If things take a turn for the worse stay safe everyone.

They flew into Orlando yesterday and are set to cruise on Thursday.

They may get wet the next couple of days (but that could be good, depending on how cool it keeps things), but it should be no problem for their cruise.

As long as it stays relatively disorganized, this is a GOOD thing for Florida. We have been snuffing out brush fires left & right for the last month, and frankly, it's getting to be a pain in the buttocks.

The onlt bad thing is that my son is at football camp at the University of Florida (Go Gators!!) this week. Guess he's gonna' get practice throwing in the rain!!!

There was confirmation of a tornado touching down in Bartow. Right around the corner from many of us. There is a tornado watch in some of the south western coastal counties. :( I hope it stays a "watch".

I wish these Tornado Warnings would just stop!!!!!!!!! In the past 30 minutes we've had two for counties just south and southwest of us. The last one was a confirmed sighting. :furious:

Not good for the blood pressure.

ACK! Another one just now at 10:25 a.m. for Hardee County, just south of us. :sad2:

Hurricane Warnings are out (from Longboat Key (North of Sarasota) northward to Ochlockonee River (South of Tallahassee)).

While Alberto IS NOT a hurricane yet, it could make landfall as a Cat 1.

And the Weather Channel just reported that it has 70 mph winds...so that is only 5 mph under a Cat 1 Hurricane! So....TS Alberto is awfully close to becoming Hurricane Alberto....

I agree we really need the rain. But lets hope that the winds stay down below Hurricane force even a Cat 1.

I am not liking the Tornado Warnings.

By the way What kind of Weather Radios do you guys have?

OMG! I had to come to the DIS to get this info?! Where is the weather update from the radio?? :furious:

I've got my radio from Radio Shack. All weather, all the time. :teeth: It was a bit confusing to figure out at first but I think I've got it straightened out now. It receives warnings and updates directly from the NWS. When there's an important update, the alarm goes off. It would wake the dead!

I think I paid about $40 for it last year.

10:35 AM Update - Hurricane Warnings Issued
Hurricane Warnings have been issued for the Florida Gulf coast from Longboat Key (North of Sarasota) northward to the Ochlockonee River (South of Tallahassee) -- This includes the Tampa Bay/St. Pete area., Alberto is not a Hurricane yet, but may be upgraded later. Winds are now at 70MPH, just under Hurricane force.

The official forecast is now calling for a Category 1 hurricane making landfall, with winds of 75MPH at landfall. Alberto has won the war with the shearing.

Likely the reason the Hurricane Warning extends so far south is because most of the convection remains to the East of the Center. Storm Surge will be more of an issue as well -- 8 to 10 feet in some areas east of where the system makes landfall. People in the coastal areas need to prepare now, and be prepared for this system.

Holly has been watching Bay News 9 this morning. They are keeping pretty current on all of the advisories being released.

I need something for here at work. I have nothing here to keep me updated on the conditions of the storm.
