Trolley ride around San Diego?

Can someone tell me about this? It sounds like something my kids (and I) might enjoy. How does it work? Is it basically a round trip circuit and we could get off at any of the stops and get back on another trolley when we're ready? If so, how long would you say the whole trip might take? Or, do the trolleys run both ways so that we could just head back to the station when we feel like it without hitting the other attractions? Where can we catch it? We may be staying in the La Jolla area. Thanks for any info.

I live in San Diego and see those trolleys a lot, but have never ridden one.
