Trivia on DCL Ships

So I was on a recent Fantasy sailing at the end of April and at almost all trivias (minus a few like the adult music ones). They had teams switching papers to check which I loved.

When I went on the Wish in May it was all honor system.

Does anyone have any insight to why some ships do it one way VS another? Do you have a personal preference?

When they first started sailing again, they had everyone check their own. I assume this was to help people stay separated. On our last Magic cruise, it was still check your own. Perhaps they are moving away from this.

I don't care either way, but then I don't cheat at trivia, so the score is the same whether I check it or someone else does.

Just the way they do it. Some do honor system, other make you switch. l suppose it might have to do with how many cheaters they may have found in the past.

Personally, I know I'm going to mark my answers properly, if it's the honor system, and not beef about others who seem to be writing the correct answers in as they are revealed.

I do have to wonder how EVERY TIME the winner is 100% correct, though.

I think it is CM dependent. On the same sailing I have seen it done both ways and the only difference was the CM running trivia.

Actually one of the reasons I like swapping papers is because occasionally I have won with a perfect score (not always but I seriously have way too many Disney facts in my head) and that way everyone knows it was legitimate.

I agree with this. We really love the trivia and often have pretty good scores. I prefer when someone else checks it for that reason. The only one we have gotten perfect is DCL trivia. Otherwise, we're usually in the 15-18/20.

I get nervous people will get annoyed with us if we win too often, but we also keep playng because it's our favorite thing to do. We do often invite others to be on a team since there's only two of us. This often bumps us up in score because inevitably someone knows something we don't.

I have to wonder if it could be a time thing, too. Like, if they're running close on time they could skip the changing papers. Maybe they judge how well they think people are doing, too, and if they need to leave time for a tie breaker and if the room needs to be turned over quickly for the next activity. I know I don't cheat and I know I'm going to be close, but not know everything, so it doesn't bother me either way.

I'm incredibly proud of my perfect score (plus bonus) Sidekick Trivia (one I was iffy on and I thought I'd guessed wrong, but it turned out, when I got my paper back, it was right)!

I prefer the exchange of score sheets. I’m frequently on my own unless I find someone to join, and usually do adult trivia in the various pubs rather than the family trivia in other venues on board. Sports trivia, pub quiz, and know it all trivia are my particular likes in the adult trivia games. My observation has been that perfect scores are much less common when score sheets are being exchanged. Winners in the 16 to 19 out of 20 seem to be much more likely under those circumstances.

They don't change the questions very often. I've had the same trivia sets years apart. So, frequent cruisers might just remember the answers from before.

I've been in a bunch of games where nobody had a perfect answer, though. In fact, the first time that I won a game was with a score of about 75%!

This is true, but I will say they’ve gotten better about this since they introduced the Knowsmore system- questions can still repeat, but the system has a lot more questions that it can randomly pull from.

I agree. We were recently on a double cruise (almost back to back) and while there were plenty of repeat questions, each trivia had several new-to-us questions as well. We'd already agreed that if we had the exact same questions, we wouldn't count our score.

Also with the new Knowsmore system, they have some different trivia topics. This trip had a RunDisney trivia as well as Disney Channel, Old School Disney Channel and Imagineering. Those were super fun!

I felt like I'm here on a cruise, not back in my fifth grade classroom... It made me feel like the CM didn't trust me to be honest and truthful... It wasn't a great feeling... For me trivia is a way to spend a half hour having some fun, not a serious competition....

Anyone who would cheat to win the minimal/nominal prizes they offer has some sort of issue as far as I can tell... It really rubbed me the wrong way...

Sadly cheating does happen. In fact there was a rather famous Disney artist on our Sept 2023 8 night supposed to go to Bermuda cruise that was with a group who was caught cheating and it was so blatant that they pulled extra entertainment CMs to walk around during trivia for the last few nights.

The entertainment CMs on that sailing are pretty candid about what happened and even months later it is referenced. It really does happen.

I have never thought that trading papers was them calling me out- but making sure everything was on the up & up for everyone.

They have done it both ways for years I remember playing Trivia back in 2018 and we had to switch for ones and others it was honor system.

I like the check your own answers system. Then spelling and handwriting aren’t important.

The biggest reason is when there was an answer heavily debated in your team and you don’t remember your final answer. Checking yourself allows you instant satisfaction if you got it right.

I play against myself - not the room - to see what I can pull out of my gray cells. Sometimes 50% (or even one tough answer) is more satisfying than a DCL winner medal.

It's funny everyone is saying that score inflation is more likely when people grade their own sheets--I found the opposite was true. Our score came out higher than I knew it should be when we swapped pages, and it made me a tad uncomfortable. We didn't get a medal but were close and I would felt very embarrassed if we had. I suspect that folks when grading others sometimes feel like they should score a point for an answer that is "close enough" just to be nice even if it is incorrect--e.g, Manolo instead of Milano for the name of the Guardians' ship.

I think that mistake is because it could be considered a spelling mistake and DCL is pretty clear that spelling doesn't count unless you spell Luke as L. E. I. A.
