Well, my DH, DD and I drove to the Raleigh-Durham airport on the afternoon of 12/18 with no traffic and absolutely no luggage except for a diaper bag for my DD. My parents had driven down earlier in the day and had offered to take our luggage so we wouldn’t have to worry about checking anything. Since this was my DD’s first flight ever, I was a bit apprehensive of how she would handle it. She did fantastic as she fell asleep before take off and awoke 15 minutes prior to landing at MCO.

Alamo rental counter was packed. Evidently they must have the best prices because all the other counters were empty. It took about 20-25 minutes and voila we had our 8 passenger van. After about a 25 minute trip, we were at Disney World and Shades of Green. My parents had already checked us in and our luggage was in our rooms. We had 3 rooms total. We were in room 145 which was in the older section, but I thought it was very nice and I’m used to 4 and 5 star resorts. I thought this was a fantastic hotel and it was a steal compared to the rices of deluxe resorts. I never thought we were paying too much. It’s a great value and one anyone with Military connections should definitely look into (www.shadesofgreen.org).

We had dinner at the Garden Gallery at SOG which was a deal at $6.95/per person for the dinner buffet. I’m not a fried chicken fan and theirs was very good. The rest of the food was just adequate. But I wasn’t overly hungry and I appreciated warm food for a very reasonable price…hard to find at Disney.

DAY 2

We drove to the MK parking lot and got the 3rd row (regular parking lot...not handicapped) next to the TTC. It was about 7:40 AM on EMH at MK. We were in the park by 8:05. Both of my parents are in ECV scooters and parked in handicapped parking, so it was definitely tricky getting around. We started with Dumbo which my daughter adored. Then did the carousel, Mad Tea Party, Winnie the Pooh, Snow White’s Scary Adventures, Peter Pan and the Haunted House. Then it was 11:30 AM and the park was getting very crowded so we headed over to Animal Kingdom.

AK was a breeze to get into as well. We used 6 Q&C vouchers at Flame Tree Barbecue and everyone thought that the ribs, barbecue sandwich, corn, beans, drinks, key lime pie and frozen lemonade were good and well worth the voucher price, as we saved a good bit…probably at least $35 with all 6 vouchers over the counter price. Next we did Kali River Rapids with no wait. We all got soaked, but luckily did take our $1 store 3/$1 ponchos with us. Then we did Flights of Wonder, watched the Jingle Jungle parade and then waited at the front gate for the rest of our party to show up…about 45 minutes later.

We had Vacation Kingdom Lunch vouchers which we used for dinner at Rainforest Café (RFC at AK is the only restaurant on the voucher that will let you use them for dinner) and had a fantastic meal. 5 of the adults ordered the Lobster and Filet. My DSis ordered a shrimp and pasta dish which she said was great. Appetizers consisted of various quantities of the bruschetta, shrimp cocktail, crab dip, and chicken fingers. The kids ate the chicken finger appetizers as their dinner. Our server was very helpful with the vouchers and was happy to suggest what we could order to make the most of our vouchers. We got 6 of the souvenir cups with the toys at the bottom and the 3 kids and the 3 men were thrilled Desserts consisted of 2 Sparking Volcanoes (Yum), bananas foster, and some sort of apple crumble dessert. We paid $186 for the vouchers. The total bill was $435.97….definitely worth the price of the vouchers to save $249.97. The men were very proud of my voucher purchases :Pinkbounc

Then we went back to SOG for late night swimming.

DAY 3

I was so lucky to have gotten 2 separate reservations for Cinderella’s Royal Table. One reservation was for 5 at 8:50 and one for 4 at 10:00 AM. Me, DD, DH, DM and DF went at 8:50 and it was fun to get into the park early and have main street virtually to ourselves. My DD loved the princesses and it was worth every penny of the breakfast vouchers ($18.25/adult and she was free). CRT was the highlight of her trip and she loved dressing up like Cinderella. My parents really enjoyed seeing her have so much fun and my DH said it was the best part of his trip as well. I thought the food was fine considering all the negatives I had heard. I thought the princesses + the food= good value.

We did MK all day until 3:00 at which point we went back to SOG for a 2 hour nap. Then my DH and I went back to MK by ourselves. My parents babysat all 3 grandkids (our DD and our 2 nephews) for us. My DH loves Splash Mountain and there was no wait at all. We did walk-up for Liberty Tree Tavern and were seated right away at 7:30 PM. We felt a little funny doing a character dinner without children, but the characters were great and I was surprised at how much my DH enjoyed the meal. We watched SpectroMagic and then just walked around and headed home around 10 PM.

DAY 4

We started our day home with breakfast at Ohana at the Polynesian. I thought this was a let down after CRT. The breakfast was okay, but the character interaction was a bit disappointing and my DD cried when Mickey, Chip and Dale came around. Goofy was fine. I will suggest that younger children might prefer CRT or Princess Storybook Breakfast because of the face characters. The other characters don’t talk and it’s a bit difficult for little ones to understand why not. My nephews, 3 and 7, loved CRT. The 7 year old thinks they’re “hot” princess: .

DD, DH and I left SOG at 11:00 and dropped the Alamo rental car off which was a breeze. Then we flew back to RDU at 1:30 and even arrived 15 minutes early. The flight was less than half full and my DD did great once again. Now I’m ready to start planning our next trip back. Any questions???

Thanks for posting. We'll be at SOG in three weeks, so I was pleased to hear about your opinion of the resort.

Was your room convenient to the buses and or parking garage?

I have a question about this resort??...We are planning our next trip for Dec 2005...My wifes sister and her husband are going with us and her Husband is Military...Can he get us each a room at SOG?...Does he call Disney directly or call SOG to book?...TIA

Yes he can. He can call SOG to book or he can go through the SOG website. He can also purchase your tickets at SOG which are tax-free.

Thank you...He has always purchased our tickets through the local base but he has never gone with us....we had considered staying at the All stars like usual but I thought about SOG and told him about it...He was unaware of SOG...Is it worth staying there over the all stars and is the price much different?...He is a young guy just married and only been in service a year so I imagine he is only a private....But I dont know how that is classified...Sorry just not up on the military lingo...

Roryc,

Glad your trip went well and you liked SOG!!! It is a great resort!

Dolphindan1,

The rates at SOG are based on your rank, so I'm not sure what your BIL will pay. I definitely think it is worth it to stay there over one of the All Star Resorts. It is a deluxe resort at a moderate price. We paid $104 per night, but my dad was an 06 (Navy Captain). Your BIL wouldn't pay that much. The website might have the rates by rank.
Good luck!!

I'm an E5 in the Mil. and it is costing us $72 at night. That price is for E1-E5 and we are going May 05.

He will pay the lowest price, which as someone else posted, is $72. You will have to pay a little more- he will sponsor your room, which means you have to get there at the same time, or he gets there first or you cannot check in. When we went, the price was $66 a night for us, and I think $85-90 a night for the rooms we sponsored (we sponsored 2). But you can pay for your own room- it's not like he has to put all rooms on his credit card.

So if your BIL is not going, your sister as long as she has a valid ID card can also sponsor you into the resort. I'm going in May to SOG in May with my parents, we'll be staying in the same room, my hubby will not be able to attend due to leave issues, but I was informed as long as I had a valid ID card I could sponsor the room for myself and my parents.

Also the previous poster mentioned someone else could pay for the room, so could they put the room I booked on my parents' credit card, or would I still pay its a question we are trying to figure out.

JMO but, I have an AP and also am a retired navy wife. I ALWAYS choose SOG over disney. For what I will pay (95 a nite) it is a much nicer hotel than what you would get for that price at disney. You can also try for overflow at SOG if they don't have the room and pay cheaper rates for disney hotels. Not sure if any of that made sense lol. We will be there in may for 9 nights!

SOG is one of several sites the Government has for military and DOD employees. I am a DOD employee and get the same rates as a military person would. I have also found a site in Hawai that is run the same as SOG it is http://www.halekoa.com/

The army MWR is actually the sponser for these places so I am sure you can get other inform from their web sit if you know it or do a search.

Hope to see anyone from the DIS in May. :earsboy:

Hi roryc, Thanks for the trip report. I was curious why did you drive to the TTC and not use the SoG buses? I think they are equipped for ECV.

Also, for some general information:

flipperjc - your guests can pay for your rooms with their credit card. You just have to be present.

Also if you fax in a request with copies of your ID card front and back, you guests can get their rooms as long as you are arriving on the same day. For example, they arrive at 3pm and you arrive at 8pm. You have to call and make the preparations through the front desk.

Also each adult ID card holder can reserve three rooms. So the active/retired/reservist member can hold three rooms and the dependant spouse can hold three rooms for a total of six rooms. This is great if you are planning a family reunion.

The rooms rate is dependant on the sponser's rate.

And, finally, you can still get stars and stripes passes at sog. This is like the old Length of Stay Pass. The advantage of this is unlimited visits to the water parks and Disney Quest are included. The disadvantage is that the days run concurrently from the date of purchase. For example a 5 day SanS pass runs from day 1 to day 5. A 5 day MYW pas allows 14 days to use your passes so you can build in rest days and not pay for them. But if you are planning to use DQ or the water parks on your down days, then it still may be the best deal.

Hope this helps someone.

Hello All- Just a quick note to let you all know that if a military member buys his/her family or friends tickets through the SOG and then they are not present while the family/friends are at the various parks Disney has the right to not honor those tickets. I have seen this happen. It would be a shame to spend money on tickets and then not be able to use them. If you are not traveling with your military friends/family I would really think twice about doing this. Call SOG for more information. Hope this helps someone! :confused3

This hasn't happened to us and we have taken many family and friends as guests to WDW. I think if they have a valid SoG hotel key that shows that they are guests of a military sponser they will be okay. Sometimes, especially with a large party it is difficult to coordinate parks.

Sorry reread the post, we are always at WDW with our guests, just not always at the same park. :bitelip:

I just did another post called "Just called Shades of green" Please go read and let me know what you all think.

We will be at SOG in May. My inlaws will be vacationing with us at WDW so getting SOG at that price will really save us a bundle. I have never stayed at SOG so I'm just wondering how it is there....are the rooms nice? How is the food there? :sunny: What is the gold leaf package? TIA!!
