As you may have read from my previous posts about this trip, we stayed in a “pet friendly” motel so we could bring our 1 ½ year old dog, Max, with us. He’s still such a puppy, and we (well, my husband mostly) aren’t ready to leave him in a kennel yet.

I found the motel, called the Surf 16, on the website www.petfriendly.com last year. We stayed there 5 nights then, and enjoyed ourselves so much, we decided to do it again.

The motel is small; it’s carved out a niche market for itself by accepting pets of any description (i.e., both small and large dogs are welcome). They charge $10 extra per night, per pet. The rooms are equipped to handle animals. All of the floors are tile so you don’t have to worry about old pet stains in the carpeting. The bed’s mattresses are covered in vinyl (for the same reason, I suppose).

Word of warning: The tile floors are a great idea, but they’re rough on human feet that are tired from walking the boards. Bring a cozy pair of slippers if you stay here.

This year, we were able to book a 1-bedroom efficiency apartment. With the dog fee and tax (which is 12 or 13% in Wildwood), it cost us $146.90 a night.

The entrance to the unit is off a terrace that’s a bit rickety. It leads into the unit’s bedroom, which has two double beds, a dresser and TV. The TVs in our unit were ancient and do not have remote controls even though they’re mounted near the ceiling. The TV in our bedroom was clearly on its way out.

Before I go further—this is the Jersey shore. You can’t expect to stay in the Ritz Carlton here. That said, we found the Surf 16’s accommodations adequate and reasonably clean—actually, exceptionally clean if you consider that animals as well as humans stay there.

Beyond the bedroom, there was a decent-sized bathroom, and past that, a kitchenette and living room combination. There is a TV in this room also. The couch is really a hide-away bed. There is a full-sized kitchen table with 4 chairs, a microwave, half-size refrigerator, kitchen sink, and cabinets stocked with plates, pots, etc. We didn’t cook, so I can’t say for certain that it was well-stocked, but it definitely appeared to be. They also provided a toaster and coffee maker. This room also had an air conditioner/heat unit that cools/heats the entire unit. We used the AC a lot, and it worked fine.

In back of the motel’s parking lot is an old miniature golf course that they’ve converted into a fenced-in dog run. Last year, it was a mess with lots of dog waste all over. It was too disgusting to use. It was far more clean this year. They even put in some nice benches for the humans to sit on while their doggies play. They had a water hose available in case of dog scuffles.

We went in there a few times this trip, but my dog wasn’t interested in running in there with his leash off. He has a big fenced-in yard at home where he does most of his business, but Max wanted no part of the motel’s dog run. When I took him off-leash there, he just sat on my feet. I think he was afraid to be off-leash not at home. (I told you he’s a baby!)

The neighborhood the motel is located in is one of its best attributes. It’s gorgeous there. The beach and northern end of the boardwalk are two blocks to the east. Here’s a hint: if you’re at the amusement pier on 25th/26th Avenues and planning to walk back to the motel, walk from the boards down to Surf Avenue there. The distance between the boardwalk and Surf widens into another block beyond 25th Avenue so it’s a shorter to walk to Surf there.

There are many, many new condo buildings in this area, and a lot of beach cottages. It’s a very clean, well-kept neighborhood. Surf Avenue is wide and has bike lanes. Walking Max around (with a plastic bag and paper towels handy at all times, of course) was a delight.
