Trip Report - September / October 2024

Saturday 9/28/24 Continued
We went to Saltgrass Steakhouse on 535 for dinner; we’ve been here several times in the past and have always enjoyed it.

We sat at the bar to eat. The same bartender who has been here for a few years recognized us so that’s always nice.

I had a Pomegranate Mojito and Scott had Bourbon.

We didn’t order any appetizers. The bread and salad remind me of Outback Steakhouse, that’s not a complaint since we like Outback, it’s just a comparison.

Scott ordered a bacon cheeseburger with fries and frizzled onions.

I ordered the blackened redfish and got the Mac & cheese for my side for Scott since I’ll eat some of his fries. The fish was a bit too spicy for me so we ended up switching dishes.

For dessert we had the seasonal pumpkin cheesecake which we loved last year but this time it was just OK.

That was our overall thoughts on Saltgrass, it was just OK this visit. It may come off our rotation for a bit as it’s become an easy first night dinner for us. Anywhere can have an off night so hopefully it was just a fluke that it wasn’t as good as it used to be.

While we were eating Maintenance called and said the jacuzzi was fixed but the floor/carpet was wet so there were some blowers there to dry it and could they come back to pick them up later. That’s fine by us, we’re happy it’s fixed.

When we got back to the villa, we started a load of laundry, it’s so convenient right in the villa.

The carpet is still wet. The blowers are very loud. We unplugged them when we were getting ready to go to bed. Maintenance came by to pick up the blowers and asked if we wanted them longer. We said we would just put a towel on the wet carpet and it would eventually dry. We wanted the villa back without people coming in and out.

I love this part of the trip - you are there and settled in and have the whole trip ahead of you. I know we already had the first part of our trip in Hilton Head, but this is the start of the Disney portion of the trip.
Yay for jacuzzi tubs at Vistana! Disney keeps taking them out :( That's great to hear that they fixed it and you were able to enjoy it.

Great idea to continue the vacation vibe! Might be fun to do even if you don't have to leave early - ease back into real life :-)
Totally agree. Especially since we’ve been trying to get home from our trips either Friday or Saturday to give us a bit of time before going back to work; like you said ease back into real life.

Funny you mentioned Tubbs..... a few years ago, we drove down from NY and stopped in Florence for the night. We went to Tubbs and from the outside it does look like a gas station or dive, however it was the best meal of the entire week and my kids to this day wanna do the drive again, just to stop there for dinner.
I guess it’s true that saying that you can’t judge a book by its cover. Maybe next time we see a Tubbs we’ll give it a try. Thank you for the recommendation.

Hi. You found my report :)

That’s a shame they keep taking them out; but I guess not too many people use them. We enjoy them. Even at home we like using the tub. Vistana is usually very good with addressing issues if they come up; of course it’s not perfect and it shouldn’t be broken to begin with, but as long as they fix things it’s OK; things happen sometimes.

Friday 10/11/24
I am totally slacking this day. I don’t remember what we did, other than we had the SnickerDoodle muffin. This was great even after making the ride home to New Jersey with us.

Saturday 10/12/24
We were still keeping our vacation vibe going, but I didn’t do a good job of taking notes or many pictures this day.

We went out to dinner to Giulio’s, an Italian restaurant in Tappan NY that we like. We know the owner, the bartenders, some of the workers, and a few regulars here too so it’s always a good time.

We sat at the bar as we like to do.

Scott had a Martini. I was telling the bartender about the Peach Palmer drink I had in South Caroline and really liked so he made his version of it. It was a bit of trial and error adding things, tasting it, adding other things. It ended up very tasty.

For appetizers we had the Clams Oreganato and Asparagus Parmigiana. I know the asparagus dish sounds odd but it’s very tasty and you are eating some veggies. Really good apps

The bread is good here, they serve a little plate on the side with some charcuterie type stuff like cheese and salami and some other stuff, we don’t eat it so always tell them not to even make us that little plate, we’ll just eat the bread with butter.

For our entree we shared Veal Parmigiana with penne meat sauce. They split this in the kitchen for us so this is half the portion. Probably our favorite Veal Parm dish.

For dessert, we ordered two things. I love the Coconut cake here, it’s not that photogenic but it’s delicious. Scott was in the mood for Tiramisu.

This was another great night hanging out at Giulos with great food and people

Sunday 10/13/24
Still keeping our vacation vibe going, we did something we don’t do very often at home, we went out for breakfast. Nothing fancy, we went to Tom Sawyer diner. I’m pretty sure it’s in Paramus and we went there because Scott wanted to stop at Stew Leonard’s grocery store after and it’s right near it. I’m not sure if you’ve even been to or heard of Stew Leonard’s but it’s very cute and quirky. There are bears that sing kind of like Country Bear Jamboree. You know how the song from Small World sticks in your head? If you go to Stew Leonard’s there is another song that sticks in your head and you will keep singing it, well we do anyway. There are Avocado’s that sing a song to the tune of the La Cucaracha, but they since “We’re Avocado, We’re Avocado,…”. I don’t know all the words but if you ask Alexa or YouTube to sing the Stew Leonard’s avocado song you will also have it in your head.

Anyway, back to our breakfast at Tom Sawyer Diner
I had one of the seasonal breakfast specials - Pumpkin Waffle. Once I took the nuts off the top and used regular syrup to dip rather than the special on that came with it, this was a great dish.

Scott had the Lumberjack breakfast with French toast, bacon, ham, sausage, and eggs. He enjoyed his breakfast.

Final Thoughts
This was a good trip. We always enjoy Disney. It was fun spending time in Hilton Head, SC too. It was definitely an interesting trip with the various changes, but we go with the flow and always have a good time being together.

I know both hurricanes were devastating for many and I feel terrible about that and hope everyone that needs to is able to rebuild and put their lives back together quickly. I don’t mean any of my hurricane comments to sound like a complaint since we only had to re-arrange our vacation a bit.

We really liked Hilton Head, SC and it’s a possible contender for a potential place to live in the future. We originally thought we wanted to be more on the suburbs of Hilton Head Island and why we met the realtor in Bluffton to look around there, but maybe if we go there we would want to be on Hilton Head Island itself. We’re a bit hesitant with it being an island and not sure we really want to live on an island, but we’ll keep it as a contender.

Since we missed going to Alabama, we’ll have to do that next trip.

We’re still debating keeping Florida on the list of potential places to move. We worry about hurricanes, the heat and humidity for much of the year, etc but it’s the sunshine state and it’s where our happy place (Disney) is. We wouldn’t look right near Disney, probably more on the west coast like we looked during our last trip. How nice would it be if our drive to Disney took a few hours rather than 2 days?

Disney is always great fun; it’s our happy place. Even with the various issues at the timeshare, we still think it’s a great fit for us giving us some additional space we like when traveling rather than a standard hotel room.

Having Invisalign made me more conscious of what I was going to eat and when. I missed out on some snacks I may have wanted to try but didn’t want to go through the hassle of taking them out to eat, then flossing, brushing, water picking, and cleaning them to put them back in.

If you have any questions and/or comments about Disney or vacations, please chime in. I love talking about it.

Noreen

I very much enjoyed your TR Noreen, as always! Those last 2 meals near your home look so delicious. I grew up in the Chicago suburbs until I was mid 20's and have lived in Colorado for almost 30 years now, so I really miss the wonderful Italian restaurants.
And now my mother and grandmother's wonderful Italian cooking as well. So you are very lucky to have that nearby!

Interested to see more locations you may move to in future trip reports as we are thinking the same for retirement.

I wanted to thank you for taking the time to write this review. I enjoyed your dining report and was excited to see you did a trip report too.

I’m from CT and shop at Stew Leonard’s and now I have the banana song in my head. 😂

Looking forward to your next trip report!
