Day -1 - Ashford - Monday July 24th 2006

All packed up (or so I thought, more on that later) we set off in the car for Ashford, the Holiday Inn to be precise. I wasn't feeling great at this point - stomach upset and headaches had been getting me down for days and at one point I even considered cancelling. So, dosed up with headache pills, Andrews Antacid and even a rub of Cool Head on my forehead, we drove to Ashford - it took us about 2 hours thanks to various sets of roadworks - how inconsiderate of them!

We arrived at the Holiday Inn at about 4pm and the first thing I noticed was the air conditioning which was turning the room into an icy retreat. So, I turned up the temperature and minutes later water started dripping from the ceiling! I phoned reception and they sent someone up who reported back to, well, whoever! We got a call that we would be moving rooms but all they had free at the moment was a suite which was smoking (not literally, that would have been more worrying than the drips!) and we wanted a no smoking room. The receptionist said she would check what it was like as she was a non-smoker herself. So, with confirmation of a fresh room from her we changed rooms, and yes, it was absolutely fine - never would have guessed even one cigarette had ever been smoked in there. The room was not much bigger but was a lot plusher and we were overlooked by nobody. Only problem was the air conditioning control panel front hadn't been put on - they promised us it would be in an hour.

We sorted ourselves out and then took a trip into Ashford town centre to get some Anadin Extra and cash. It's a nice little town with a car park which had all instructions in French - started to feel like DLRP was getting that much closer! We came back and after a drink in the bar and having watched Neighbours we crossed the road to have dinner in the Harvester. Free salad cart with every main meal - just what I wanted with a dodgy stomach so we tucked in. Good food though a little slow. After dinner we had a walk down by the river which was really nice - the area around the hotel seemed pretty exclusive with lots of big houses.

When we got back the air conditioning panel hadn't been fixed so I spoke to reception and they said to just turn it off. That's all very well but without the control panel attached would that not be hard? I managed to turn it off by holding the control panel facia up to the exposed unit and seeing which metal switch sat where the off button should be! We settled into bed and watched Saxondale (Steve Coogan comedy on BBC2) and what followed was a night of little sleep for me, I eventually got a couple of hours sleep from 4am - stomach was giving me jip.
