Pre- Departure & Flight Day…10-11th Feb 2012

For weeks before the trip I’d been consumed with trying to decide whether or not to stay at the airport the night before and where to park the car. Typically, we do stay at the airport the night before, but usually we are in the US for 10 days and most hotels offer free parking for up to 14 days then start charging you daily at extortionate rates. I knew we’d need parking for 16 days if we stayed overnight at the airport so after much debating I decided to stay at the Marriott hotel £55.96 ($85) at Gatwick without parking and use ABC Meet & Greet Parking £74 ($110).

For travellers from the UK (particularly those travelling with Virgin Atlantic) I highly recommend doing what we did, let me tell you why…
There are 3 hotels that are actually on the Gatwick property, Sofitel (North Terminal), Hilton (South Terminal) and Marriott. Being on the airport the day before stops you worrying about getting there on time and gets you into the “holiday groove” (as Kate and I call it) earlier. You can relax into your trip knowing you can be at the gate in less than an hour the next day. In our case, only the Marriott had availability, but it is also about £100 cheaper a night! :thumbsup2

If you’re travelling with Virgin Atlantic, you can also take advantage of their twilight check in which is AWESOME! Twilight check in starts at 1pm on the day before you travel, it allows you to get rid of your cases and get your seat before anyone else. That means you’re more likely to get the seats you want on the plane because you’re among the first to check in. ;)

We arrived at Gatwick at around 2pm, we were met by the uniformed guy from ABC Parking outside the doors to departures. He checked the car over, gave me a copy of a signed receipt with instructions on what to do on our return and drove the car off to its holiday home for the next 16 days! It was quick and simple and considering my sister paid over £100 to park at Gatwick for 10 days earlier in the year then had to mess around with a bus back to the terminal with their cases, it was a bargain! :thumbsup2

By 2.15 we were at the check in desk for Virgin Atlantic. There was no one in line because all of the flights for the day had departed and we could walk straight up. By 2.30, we were checked in with the seats we wanted, cases were out of our hair and we could walk the 500 yards to the Marriott to settle in for the night – firmly in the holiday groove!:cool1:

We stayed in room 252, courtyard view, and the hotel was really nice considering the price. The room had 2 queen beds, a flat screen TV, and was really comfortable other than the bed! Ok, so let me just explain because for most of you the bed would have been great… Amanda and I have a memory foam bed, which we hated initially but have grown to love and appreciate with our injuries from the car accident. In a memory foam bed, if your partner moves, you don’t feel it, in that hotel bed, every time one of us moved (which is frequent because our injuries mean we can only stay in one spot for a short time) it felt to the other like they were being launched out of the bed. Needless to say we didn’t sleep too well! :rotfl:

The hotel had a really nice restaurant. It wasn’t cheap but you’d expect that at an airport hotel, but the food was great and it wasn’t too hard on the pocket. Amanda had a chicken ceasar salad which was HUGE and Kate and I shared (this will become a common thread through this TR) a steak burger, fries, coleslaw and onion rings. The total bill was £42 with the drinks but Kate’s apple juice was £3.50 of that! Seriously…£3.50 for a juice, did the apples come from the tree of life or something?:rotfl2:

After dinner, we chillaxed in our room, watched some TV and I checked my folder for the hundredth time. I have to confess to being a bit OCD with these things, I took a folder that had all of paperwork, tickets, BEOs, email confirmations, receipts etc., in it all in the order they would be used. I know, I think I must have Autism too at times! :confused3

Sleep as I said was not my friend that night, but I was rested enough and relaxed for the flight ahead. We walked to the airport and because we were flying Premium Economy we got to use the Premier Security thing so we were through the doors, through security and into departures in less than 5 minutes. We picked up a couple of things at WH Smiths and waited for our gate to appear on the screen. This was the first time that I realised how much easier life was being a non-smoker on flight day! Usually, I’m the last to go through security so I can nip out for a smoke before I fly, this time, I was chilling in departures keen to get on the plane!:woohoo:

When the gate appeared we headed straight there knowing we had priority boarding and we could get on the plane first! Here is where the first negative happened…

So, travelling premium economy comes at a price and it’s not cheap. It’s a supplement of about £300 ($450) each way. For that supplement you expect a better level of service than you get in cattle class. Was I expecting business class, no, of course not, was I expecting better than economy, you bet ya!

Here is a little review of Virgin PE for those who are interested….

For your £600 ($900) extra, you get 6 inches extra legroom, 3 inches extra seat width, priority boarding, check in &, baggage reclaim. You also get a menu, your meals on real plates with real cutlery, pre-flight champagne or juice, a newspaper, small cabin, dedicated cabin crew (you will see why this becomes laughable in a moment) and extra baggage allowance.

Virgin are currently refurbishing their fleet with the Gatwick/Orlando route being done later in 2012. So you get the old planes (747 twin deck). The extra legroom/width is relatively unremarkable or noticeable to be honest. 6 inches may sound a lot but it really doesn’t make a whole lot of difference in my opinion. We had additional legroom because the special assistance team (who are wonderful by the way) made the request for us because of Kate’s additional needs. There are 2 PE sections, one on the main deck just behind Upper Class, and the whole of the upstairs is PE.

We were on the main deck going out in seats 81 DEF and on the upper deck in 70 AC and 71C on the way back. Upper deck is definitely better but I’ll discuss that later in the TR. Priority boarding, check in and baggage claim worked on the way out, on the way back baggage reclaim went horribly boink!
The food was good, jumbo couscous salad, braised beef in red wine, chocolate moose, cheese & crackers and hot bread roll.

Florida003.jpg

This is how you can tell it was good…
Florida006.jpg

… all that was left was the fat from the beef! :thumbsup2

So now for the negative stuff…

The plane clearly hadn’t been cleaned properly from the previous flight. There were sweet wrappers on the seats and in the magazine pockets and when meal service came and I pulled out my tray it was disgusting.

Florida001.jpg

Florida002.jpg

Ok, I accept that the cleaners didn’t do what they should and that isn’t entirely the fault of Virgin Atlantic, but when pointing this out to the *”!%£* flight attendant (brace yourselves, there is a huge rant coming about her!) she said “The cleaners don’t do a very good job, sorry!” and walked off! There was no offer to clean it, not even an offer of a cloth or something for me to clean it with myself, she just moved right on like it didn’t matter at all to her.

Said flight attendant whose name (for those who may have the misfortune to get her on their flight) was “Alex” was a total waste of space to everyone in PE except one chosen family who were seated to our left. She spent the whole 9+ hour flight pandering to their every whim, which included them moving from different seats and throwing out other people’s seating, plying them with drinks, snacks and chocolate and chatting with them while sitting on the floor in front of them pretty much the whole time. No one else got a drink with their meal because she was too busy chatting, when I asked her for a Pepsi when she had a moment, she rolled her eyes and said she’d get it in a minute. 3 repeats of the request over the next few hours never resulted in my getting a drink.:headache:

This family were constantly given everything and more as she sat on the floor *****ing about how her job sucks with them. At the end of the flight she gave them a ton of drinks to “take away” which included a carton of juice which they snuck into their bag. There were 8 kids in the PE section (which only had 16 seats for her to service) and while she handed crisps and chocolate to the two kids in the chosen family, the others were left to watch this happen without so much as an offer for them to have any.

What really irked me was at the end of the flight she gave them some sort of questionnaire thing or compliments thing and said “could you fill this in about my performance today”. Well, of course, it would be a glowing report, she’d spent 9 hours pandering to their whims to the neglect of the other 12 passengers in PE. I was livid! I have written to Virgin to complain because I was so angry.

The flight was uneventful, the entertainment didn’t work for half the flight which upset other people but didn’t bother me because I never watch the films anyway. We arrived in Orlando about half an hour late due to a strong head wind with the flight time being 9 hours and 36 minutes.

I have to say that I hate Orlando International! Sanford is so much easier. I don’t like having pick up the cases, drop them off again, get the monorail to the terminal, wait to pick them up again…it’s a drag! We used the time to take care of the hire car so when our cases emerged for the second time we could just head over to Alamo and get going. Another thing I hate is the ridiculous charges for luggage carts and the fact that you have to somehow lay your hands on some change for the tolls!

RANT OVER!!

Alamo tried to tell me that I had to upgrade the car (which I’d prepaid £225) telling me that the 3 of us and 3 cases wouldn’t fit. Nice try but I’ve done this before! ;) They did automatically charge me for the fuel which irritated me but I figured I wouldn’t have to worry about topping up so it was OK. We got to “pick a car” from the relevant section and Amanda picked a black Nissan Versa which was a nice little car and suited our purposes.

We expected traffic to be quite heavy as it was the tail end of rush hour but it was fine, we arrived at Disney about 25 minutes later. I always get an overwhelming feeling of excitement when you get off of I-4 at the Disney exit and see the Disney sign ahead of you. It happens every trip I arrive but only the first time I see it. :cheer2:

Finding Saratoga Springs was a bit of a challenge. Amanda took the wrong exit and it took us a while to get back on track. The resort is beautiful and at check in we were given the new buttons. We were given room 7112 in the Carousel area, not our choice and it did give us one or two problems, but nothing too serious. It was actually really quiet over there and we ended up liking it!:thumbsup2

Our studio was lovely, one king bed and a sofa bed. We had door wall, out on to the patio and a bus stop right by our door (not that we used Disney transport much). We headed out to get some food, which proved a pain, being a Saturday night, everywhere was heaving with people, and we ended up driving around for a while to different places to try to find something we’d eat that we didn’t have to wait a week to order! We ended up having a quick service meal from Port Orleans FQ food court.

Then it was off to bed ready for our first full day at WDW… next up - The TSM dash & The Royal Table Experience!

Day 2 – TSM Dash & The Royal Table Experience 12th February 2012

We were up at the crack of dawn next morning after hitting the hay fairly early after the long journey but it worked out well because we had an 8am ADR at Hollywood & Vine Disney Junior Character Breakfast. We didn’t anticipate that it would be FREEZING, yes, literally FREEZING with frost on the ground that morning and I was really hoping that it wouldn’t be cold for the whole trip! We didn’t think Kate would enjoy it too much but the primary purpose was to be IN the studios and ready to roll before Rope Drop to beat the Toy Story Mania Danger Dash! It proved to be a VERY SMART move on my part.

Kate enjoyed it far more than we expected and had a little bit of a romance with Jake! I don’t have any pictures from the breakfast because I forgot the camera!

We tried to get most of our ADR’s at buffets so that everyone who would be joining us for our wedding would be able to eat without a problem. The breakfast buffet at Hollywood and Vine is pretty good and the character interactions are among the best of all of the character meals we did. Kate enjoyed her breakfast and dancing with the characters.

At 8.40am, I made sure we were all fed, our bill was processed with our DDP, and we were good to go, thinking that we could potentially get to TSM before the rambling mob at the gates were let into the park. Our server was lovely, and bought us drinks in take away cups. It didn’t quite work that way because CM’s held us and another family with the same idea at bay until the first person set foot through the turnstiles at the gate, at which point we were duly released ahead of the crowd. Thinking we’d just walk over, we soon realized that the rushing stampede was catching us and I admit that I did break into a little run! I arrived at the FP machine got our FP’s which were for 9.35 – 10.35 while Amanda and Kate caught up and got in the standby line. We were the second family on TSM that morning with FP’s in hand for later!

RESULT!! So my tip for those of you who are on the DDP or don’t mind paying OOP for Hollywood & Vine (which is a little pricey for what it is!) is get an early ADR get yourself fed (or as Kate and I like to say “get your grub on!”) and be outside by 8.45am ready to roll. You’ll be thankful that you did and you’ll be able to ride TSM twice by 11am. 8/10 for Hollywood & Vine Breakfast!

Being all fed so early in the park was great because we didn’t have to stop for food until we were ready to head out of the studios. After TSM, we managed to hit half the headliners and several other attractions including TOT and TSM for the second time by 11.30am. We also had FP’s in hand for Star Tours which we didn’t end up using. Even being held up by “Kyle” at the DVC booth for 20 minutes didn’t dent our timing, however it was useful because we managed to snag instant FP’s later in the trip by doing the DVC tour!:thumbsup2

One of my goals this trip was to spread some pixie dust pixiedust:(which didn’t always work out so well as you’ll read later) so the Star Tours FP’s were given to another family who were really grateful. It was the little girls birthday so it was a nice treat to be able to walk straight on one of the big attractions.
On the way out of the park at about 12.30 we stopped at Starring Rolls. My plan was to get my first cup cake because I’d heard so much about them and never actually had one, but Kate and I ended up sharing a counter service meal which included the infamous Butter Finger Cup Cake!

Now, a lot has been written about maximizing the DDP and getting the most bang for your buck. I found myself almost obsessing about getting the most for my credits for a couple of days but quickly decided that it wasn’t about getting the most bang for your buck, it was about eating what you really wanted to eat, getting plenty of food and enjoying it! I’d done so much research about the best snack credit items and had grand plans to get the best value, in the end, I spent my last day frantically trying to use up 24 remaining snack credits because most of the items on the best value list I got as part of a counter service meal!

Kate and I had an awesome ham sandwich, chips (crisps), the butter finger cup cake (which we shared with Amanda too!) and a large coke. OOP price $17.97. It was more than enough food to feed the 2 of us and we really enjoyed it.

Tip 2 for those on the DDP is that Disney or at least your KTTW card do not distinguish between adult counter service credits and child credits. Therefore, if you have a kid like mine who won’t eat crappy kid food (chicken nuggets, PB&J, Mac & Cheese etc.) get adult meals and share them with your child. There is more than enough food to do it and you do maximize the value of the credits because you get all adult meals. Kate and I shared pretty much every day and we didn’t finish all the food 90% of the time.

Butter finger cup cake was good, but not as good as I thought it would be. I think they are somewhat overrated because of the sheer size of them. The 3 of us couldn’t finish one but I wouldn’t say that it that spectacular. Tasty yes, spectacular, not so much!:rolleyes1

With full tummies again, we headed out of Hollywood Studios. The plan was to head back and get some rest ready to hit Magic Kingdom and our ADR at Cinderella’s Royal Table at 6pm. Didn’t quite work out that way!

So, getting a reservation at the Royal Table is no mean feat. Amanda called 180 days ahead to make the reservation the moment the lines open. With all the fuss about it and the fact that it is such a hot ADR to get, I had high expectations and for the most part it didn’t disappoint.

Florida037-1.jpg

For those who don’t know, CRT is a restaurant in the castle. It is $60+ per adult or 2 table service credits if you have the DDP. It is more than a meal, it’s an experience! It includes a photograph and the kids get little gifts to take away with them. It’s pricey and I don’t know if I’d pay OOP for it, but it’s a good use of the DDP in my opinion. The princesses circulate around the tables and they spent a good amount of time at each table.

Florida034-1.jpg

The food was really good. I didn’t particularly care for my chicken dish (but it was nicely presented and just not to my taste), Amanda had the beef which was FANTASTIC! It’s what I call “pretty food” that looks so nice you don’t want to mess it up by eating it! Our server was Karen and she was lovely, we saw her a few days later at Epcot with her family and she recognized us, stopped and said “hi princess” to Kate. I didn’t recognize her at all but Kate did and I thought it was very nice of her to take time to say hi when it was clearly her day off with her own kids.

Florida020-2.jpg

When you enter and check in at the podium, you’re sent to have your picture done with Cinderella which they later bring to your table for you. Kate didn’t like this particular Cinderella, insisting that she wasn’t very nice or happy. I could see her point. Kate did crack me up, saying “Daddy, I know that they’re not real characters, they’re just adults dressing up, but she wasn’t a happy Cinderella, Ididn’t like her much” It’s moments like that which making having a child with Autism so much fun, there is no filter, no fooling them and no holding back.

When they call you to your table they address you as the Royal Family of (Your Surname). We were seated by the doorway. The first princess at our table was Aurora who Kate liked much better.

Florida026-2.jpg

Florida025-2.jpg

Next was Ariel…

Florida027-2.jpg

Funny story about Ariel that I just have to share… So Amanda asked Kate if she could remember who mommy’s favourite princess was, to which Kate responded in the negative. So I said, “Mummy’s favourite is Ariel”. Kate burst out laughing and said “Ariel isn’t a Princess, she’s a fish” Again, the joys of Autism!

Florida028-2.jpg

Shortly after Ariel (the fish) came by, we were visited by Snow White. Kate was not so keen on her but she was good with Kate.

Florida029-1.jpg

Florida030-1.jpg

For dessert we both had the trio of desserts, oddly for me, I didn’t really enjoy them too much but again I think it was personal taste. I am usually a huge dessert person and I did enjoy one of the 3.

Florida031-1.jpg

Finally, it was Belle’s turn to visit. She was Kate’s favourite because she chatted with her about one of Kate’s most important passions…READING! Kate is a book worm and Belle chatted with her about the books she likes etc. Although Kate couldn’t understand why she didn’t know about the books she likes because they were UK exclusive!

Florida032-1.jpg

We didn’t get to see Cinderella at our table but that was no big loss in Kate’s view. We asked if she wanted to wait to see her and she said “no she’s grumpy anyway”. We settled the bill up with our DDP and feeling full and really tired, we decided to skip the rides we had planned at MK and head back to the hotel.

Next up Day 3 - Soarin Failure & The Garden Grill Disaster!

GREAT TR so far! :goodvibes Your meal at CRT looks fantastic, makes me want to try it out the next time we got to WDW.

We are from Essex too! :cool1: Small world, huh? What did you think of Saratoga Springs? We LOVED it in August! We got a 45% discount- now it's expired it's way out of our budget.

Your room at the Marriott looks lovely. We wanted to do an overnight stay at the airport in August but the rooms were a lot more expensive than that! We're going in October in 2013 though, and hopefully the rooms will be cheaper then.

How was the weather when you went? Quite cool? It is baking in August, but our family loved it, being from the UK... and getting fairly rubbish summers. Lol.

That sucks about the service on the flight. I would have definately complained too! On our flight, the headphone docks were broken on our row for the seatback TVs, and all the attendant said was 'Oh sorry, kids pick at the plugs sometimes. It's just life.' A nine hour flight with no TV isn't very easy- and to be honest, when you pay £800 a person for a flight, you expect more lol. I would have insisted she cleaned your dirty tray- that was disgusting! Lol.

The food in PE looks wonderful in comparison to our American Airlines economy food. It was absolutely awful! I'm just not sure PE offers good value for money lol.

Can't wait for the next update! :)

We got Saratoga at the 35% off deal. We loved it, we want to buy DVC there next year because we loved it so much!

We went in August 2008 and it was HOT but we found it tolerable for the most part. We are going again in July 2012 with our other daughter. Personally, I think Feb is the perfect time to go, the weather was 75 - 85 most days, which is nice but not super hot, the crowds were very low first week, second week was busier but not unmanageable.

I have flown with pretty much every airline known to man and I have never experienced such crappy service as the flight out. We didn't pay the full price for the flights (we booked directly with Disney and we didn't pay the £300 each to upgrade that Virgin charge their own customers) but if I had, I would have been screaming the plane doors off.

PE is OK but I think with Virgin it is overpriced for the "benefits" you get. Delta charge around $80 per person to upgrade to their PE which is more reasonable.

Where in Essex are you from? We live in Thurrock.

great TR so far, Kate cracks me up, soon i'll be an Essex girl to!

Did you have the DVC talk at SSR? We did and it was very interesting- they take you round a few different DVC villas. The Aulani one looked fab. It was very tempting, honestly, I would do it if we had a little spare money. Also they're constructing a DVC part to the Grand Floridian- which really is the icing on the cake for me. :goodvibes

We want to try going around February like you. We've been looking at Orlando temperatures over the last few months and they've been very hit and miss. It looked like some days in february it barely reached 20 degrees (celcius of course).

I'm not sure what Virgin economy is like but American Airlines Economy is absolutely awful. The food from your flight looks like a completely different leaugue to our economy fare. £300 each seems like a rip off. I'll have to have a look at Delta then. It might be worth it on the overnight flight especially.

The service you received does sound pretty awful, especially as you were paying a premium for PE. I always thought Virgin was meant to be one of the best airlines! :confused3

We are from Saffron Walden. Quite a while away from you! But we visit your area quite a lot for Lakeside. Isn't Bluewater quite near you too?

I can't wait to hear about Soarin' and Garden Grill! :cool1:
