Can you add trip insurance to your resort package, or did it need to be added when originally booked?

I think that you have to do it within 30 days but you can always buy it separately from Disney. It's pretty easy.

Yes, you can buy trip insurance form an insurance company. You could start by seeing if your current insurance company has a vacation insurance policy that you can buy. We always just purchase the coverage through Disney. You can't be less than either 30 or 45 days, I cannot exactly remember which one. I would call Disney and let them know you wanted to add the vacation insurance and see what they say.

Whenever we buy trip insurance, we go through insuremytrip.com. Reasonable prices and good service (yes, we have had to file a claim that was paid within a week). They have many policies to choose from, so if you're confused give them a call and explain what coverages you need. They are very friendly and helpful on the phone. Also, their policies typically cover more than Disney's, for less money.

If you buy it outside of Disney, keep in mind whether or not you want a pre-existing condition waiver. If you do, you usually need to get your policy within 14 days of initial payment of your trip. If not, you won't get it or it'll be quite costly to get it. What the pre-existing condition waiver does is it prevents insurance companies from looking at your medical record to deny/approve a medical claim. You also have a limited window of time to purchase an addition to a policy that would cover work related cancellations. To keep it in perspective, Disney's policy (through Allianz) does not provide pre-existing condition waiver, or work related cancellation coverage regardless of when you get the policy.
