Hello,
I posted a few days ago regarding Disney trip insurance vs. AAA (AMA) trip insurance, but got no responses as of yet. I am going to try this again perhaps by asking more generally, Have any of my fellow Canadians bought trip insurance, and if so ... do you have a recommendation for a good supplier? $8,000.00 is a lot of money for me to leave to chance during hurricane season! :scared1:
Thanks for any and all advice,
Marie

RBC is by far the best. Do not buy Disney Ins. It is very biased towards US Clients. Protect your vacation investment. It is suicide not to..On top of that kind of money--it's small change!

I agree with minnie56 - RBC is the best for price. If you are paying by credit card - check with them as well - it may be covered already.

How do I get travel insurance through RBC ? Does it cover air as well ?
Is it less expensive than the Disney Insurance at approximately $140 ?

Also, it is not on my mastercard. If I add it, can I just pay for one year of travel insurance.

Sorry for my lack of knowledge. This is one area I find.... :scared1:

I hope I can help! Go to royalbank.com and click on the insurance tab, scroll down to trip insurance - information is posted and contact numbers. I believe it covers air as well. I am pretty sure that I paid around $75 for a family of 5 with full coverage a few years ago. I would also call your mastercard and ask if it is covered if you paid through the card - my visa does, as long as I purchased the trip with my visa. You could also try your banking institution they may also have insurance and if you are a client you can sometimes get a discount. Good luck!

Just did Insurance for a Client..as an example of cost:

Trip Value $3801-incl Air, Cruise and taxes.Deluxe Policy
$274.32

Wise investment!!:thumbsup2

I don't get health insurance as I have a policy through work. I add on the $60 to my mastercard and it covers all trips (nonmedical) for the whole year. I've used it many times for lost camera, hotel rooms when flights were cancelled, etc and they were great everytime. I just go online and take it off the card if we're not travelling one year. The $60 covers every trip (as long as it booked with your Mastercard) all year long.

Why don't you guys like the Disney Insurance? We have never been ones to purchase trip ins prior to our DD & we travel quite a bit. We decided to purchase the trip ins. through Disney this time because it sounded like it was much easier to use if we had a problem.
Any feedback?

We have a Policy (Travel Medical) added to our Homeowners Policy for our family of 4. It is with our ING Home and called 'Travelwell 30'. Protects us for unlimited trips out of the Country up to 30 days per trip. Cost $82 per year. RBC also offer an annual policy. That being said..I still add medical to my RBC Insurance when I travel. Have had medical 'mishaps' and have seen 1st hand how fast a bill can add up! I am now the most over protected person ever to travel! EVER!

Disney Insurance has limitations for non-US residents. Just not the best option.

Thanks for so many replies! :goodvibes Every bit of advice helps. I am wondering, can I buy RBC insurance as a stand alone purchase if I do not have a RBC credit card? I am thinking most of our trip will end up being paid off by a large cheque from our US account when the time comes, as my PC master card charges 2.5% on top of the currencey rate conversion for foreign purchases. Also, i live in Alberta, so can I still purchase trip insurance through RBC? and lastly, any thoughts on purchasing through the motor vehicle office (CAA/ AAA/ AMA... or affiliates?) I guess in Alberta it is AMA (Alberta Motor Association)
Thanks for all the advice because I definitely need to protect our $8k investment, and I will definitely buy the insurance.... I just want to purchase the best policy for our family. We are a family of 4.

Absolutely you do not need an RBC Credit Card to buy the Insurance.Someone else may know more than I but I cannot think why you couldn't purchase in Alberta??:confused3

Have no idea about the other providers, sorry. I am sure others here do. Just make sure to read the policy coverages and limitations. Insurance Companies are very rich by making sure THEY have dotted all the i's and crossed all the t's! Make sure to do the same!:thumbsup2

Thanks for everyone's help. After a few phone calls I also discovered that my husband's plan at work has excellent out of province health coverage ( better than disney's) and that I could get the gold trip cancellation for $ 60.00 on our mastercard.

Once again, more savings thanks to the dis boards ! What would I do without you! ;)

Marie, sorry for the hijack.

I got to use my out of province on my trip- my emplyer has it and my credit card has it. I needed meds in the middle of the night and there i was a single mom-i mentioned this to the lady on the phone and they sent the doctor to my hotel room-wow all covered. A nurse first called me so the doctor would have the right meds. He showed up in 20 mins, did some tests and gave me my meds! WOW

We have a Mosiac CC and we pay $45/yr and it covers dependent family members up to a max of $4,000.00. $8000.00 seems like a lot of money to pay to go to Disney at that time of year. Is a cruise involved?

Hello tgropp :) No, there is no cruise involved. Our flights from Edmonton where $2,400.00 for the 4 of us. That was AC 50% off sale, too. Then, our package price so far is about $7,400.00. That is for 4ppl. 10 day park tickets with the water park more and hopper option. 11 nights at our resort (AKL Club level) and the basic dining plan for all 4 (my 2 boys will be teens, so adult pricing for them).

We are still hoping free dining comes out then, and we can add it to our ressie, because that would save us about $1,600.00 off our total.

We love Animal Kingdom Lodge and where spoiled by club level on our first Disney trip... The boys in my family and I, too, I must admit , totally LOVE the club level ammenities. To our family it is a worthwhile addition that no one wants to give up. So, as you can see, it's a lot of money I do not want to leave to chance, especially since my husband is active military and he could be called to work out of country on only short notice anytime.

I kick myself now because when I researched trip insurance through our flight link, it took me to RBC web site. which then informed me that my insurance had to be bought at time of purchase.... Well, I purchased our flights back around the 19th of Dec. so it is too late to purchase AC travel insurance.

I am thinking of going through AMA because they said we can still add it on until our trip balance is due (which is July). They will insure both the flights and the Disney Package. I am holding out to find out if our balance will go down and if we get free dining before purchasing coverage for my Disney package, but I may purchase the flight portion soon, incase something happens in the near future, I don't want to be stuck having a problem labeled "pre-existing" and be denied re-imbursement.

I am impressed. I like to pamper myself when I am down there also. Hope that you have a wonderful time

A couple of suggestions:

1. You can insure the flight portion through RBC Insurance and take the pre-existing condition risk. We've done this before and it was arranged by our TA but I presume you could deal directly with RBC. On the WDW portion, you would have the benefit of the generous cancellation policies of WD Travel -- Full refund for cancellation outside 45 days. $100 for cancellations under 45 days but before 6 days. Loss of deposit for cancellation within 5 days. With this alternative, you only "pay" on the WDW portion if you end up canceling.

2. You can cancel your existing WDW reservations and rebook. Presumably all the insurers will treat this as a new booking, so you won't be stuck with the pre-existing condition restriction on coverage. I know that when I recently got a quote for a WDW vacation from an online TA, they offered trip cancellation insurance that would have covered my flights even though I would only be booking the WDW portion through them.

Just my two cents.

Hello :) I was told by WDW I could purchase insurance up to the day our balance is due for the trip insurance. It was the flight insurance that I should have purchased at the time of booking our flights online with AC. I was also told by AMA I can insure my whole trip with them still, and insurance will be active from the day I buy it.... I think this is my best bet :)
