Trip Insurance?

I can't get search to work for looking up insuring my trip. I did not insure my trip through Disney, as I read when I first found these boards that I can get better coverage for less $$ or around the same $$. Anyway, I found a package I like on Insure my trip .com, and I guess I don't really understand how it all works.

If my total trip is going to cost $3500, how do they know what I have purchased as far as my trip goes? I don't really get it.

i.e. If I would have purchased my trip through Disney, then they(meaning Disney) knew exactly what I spent and what I bought. They would know what to cover if I had some sort of problem.

Am I making any sense? I just don't want to buy the wrong insurance.

I am purchasing travel insurance through my travel agent. I trust her, and it's only $186 vs. Disney's $316 for our land/sea trip for 4 of us. And as I understand it it covers air as well where Disney's does not. I think the company is travel guard.

They don't know how much you spent, but if you have to use it they will only cover up to that amount. Call them with any questions, they are always happy to help.
