I bought insurance once and my 29 year old cousin was killed in an auto accident and they wouldn't allow that because she wasn't *immediate family*.

So, after that experience I have never bought it again.

I'm so sorry about your cousin!

Trip insurance policies varry by carrier, so if you ever take a trip where you feel you may need it, check out the fine print, there are those that would consider a 1st cousin an immediate family member. Travel Guard and Travel Safe are both big and well known companies, and their full policies are online for easy review.

I answered no to the question, because I did not get insurance for this vacation- I own DVC and am staying on points. Their insurance has always seemed high to me. However, I had to cancel a cruise for this past February. The insurance cost $68. I got back every penny from my deposit and flights I had booked myself on jetblue. It was over $2800 back. I knew I had to cancel 2 months out, the process was really easy and a lifesaver. If I hadn't had the insurance I would have been refunded to cruise fee because it was before the final payment was due, but would now have a $1400 jetblue credit that I wouldn't be able to use within a year.

I think it is just a way to get more money.
