Trip Insurance, the basics please

My parents and my family have a trip planned for the first week in December to Disney World. When we first booked the trip a little less than a year ago, the flu wasn't a factor. Now although the illness isn't serious in all cases, it's serious enough that it could ruin a week long vacation. I'm still on the fence concerning the vaccine and at this point, I'm not sure that our whole party will be able to get the shot before we go anyways. So, with that in mind I'm trying the hedge my bet. I've briefly looked at trip insurance but I can't make heads or tails of all the information. Can you help me? Keep in mind that our trip isn't booked through Disney, we purchased points through a DVC member so we don't have the option of insuring through them. Any information would be helpful, thanks.

My understanding is that you will have to purchase a "cancel for any reason" policy, which is considerably more expensive. I have used www.insuremytrip.com to find policies for several trips but have never purchased a policy that would allow me to cancel for any reason.

You can buy trip insurance through most insurance brokers-and it is probably less expensive than going through Disney. Some trips cover illnesses like the flu and some don't. Premiums are generally based on how much coverage and the cost of the trip. If you call a broker (you can even try your home and auto person) they should walk you through the details of the plan. You will also want to check with your health insurance carrier to see if there is someplace close to Disney that accepts your plan (pharmacy too).

Usually the trip insurance covers plane tickets and unrefundable hotel costs. The problem is that you will have to buy a policy on everyone on your trip and it might cost more than what your trip cost.
