Whom did you use? What did you look for?

Personally it makes me cranky to pay cancellation insurance that doesn't seem to cover *anything* so I've never bought canc. ins. With a cruise, I dunno, I feel like I need more insurance all around.

I could buy from Disney, but our TA said it seems to be relatively expensive. In the past we have just used our credit card (CIBC), it had a good rate/package, but not sure how it would work on the cruise. Dh also has out-of-country medical for all of us fromwork, but I don't know if that would cover, you know, an airlift off a ship in the Bahamas...

Trip Insurance

We always pay for any Disney vacation, be it at the parks or the cruise using my husbands visa platinum, which has trip insurance provided you pay the whole thing on the card. That way we're covered, because you never know, we're human and we wouldn't lose all that money.:surfweb:

You pay all that money for a Cruise and then for a few hundred more, you don't protect that investment?

If you don't purchase your air via the Cruiseline and for whatever reason, miss the ship..literally, you are totally on your own getting to the next stop of that ship. Could be at HUGE financial cost. If you were to take ill onboard..at sea...require being taken to the nearest hospital, can you imagine that cost? So very many things can happen...and be very careful with Credit Card insurance. Be sure to match 'clause by clause' the inclusions and exclusions. Too many times I have seen the underwriters of those plans nit-pick and look for loopholes to 'null and void' the claim.

After an incident a few years back, at Disney of all places and a MONSTROUS bill....trust me...RBC Insurance and I are new best friends as well as a seperate medical policy on my homeowners insurance just for travel.

Good Luck in your travels!

No, I do want to protect it, I just want the best coverage/price for the circumstances. This is our first cruise and the...immutableness...of the start worries me, I don't want to miss that boat, or, for that matter, have to pay for an airlift off it! We always buy health insurance if not covered otherwise, but this is the first time cancellation insurance seems worth it and I know nothing about the options.

Should call CIBC and ask about their travel protection, though I gave up my Aerogold, which had all the travel perks. Dh's card is through BofM, don't know if we'd be better off paying through that card.

The first thing is to look at what type of insurance you need. "Travel Insurance" is a fairly generic term - it could cover medical, cancellation, bagge delay, etc. Make sure you buy what you need, and only what you need.

In your original post, you specifically mention "cancellation", so I'll assume you are not looking for supplementary medical insurance, etc (many group medical plans cover out of province/country medical).

For cancellation insurance, I've always looked at what are the costs if I have to cancel, versus the cost was of insurance.

If you are putting together the travel package yourself (paying separately for air fare, cruise, rental car, etc), your best option for cancellation insurance is a 3rd part insurer such as RBC Insurance. If you buy cancellation insurance from each separate vendor, the cost will be high.

Mousesavers has an excellent FAQ on cruise travel insurance.

The cancellation fees for cruises are much higher than a WDW hotel, so cancellation insurance is probably a good option.

And trip interruption is important as well. What if something happens when your trip has begun!? I would have your Agent if you have one quote RBC for you or you can seek a quote from them yourself.

Thanks, good info. That FAQ is particularly helpful, breaks the elements out well.

First time crusier here...

Never bought insurance for our Disney Vacations.. BUT definately bought for the March cruise! We bought our insurance through Costco.

I have elderly parents/ young kids.... Don't want to take any chances with both cancellation and interuption..

We too have a platinum card and are covered medically and such,
but wanted the extra coverage this time.
Costco was half of Disney's price , with better coverage ( for what we needed).
I also transfered my Disney online reservation to Costco for a $250 gift card.

Hope that info helps you out.

Thanks for the tip, I'll check into Costco...

I use RBC insurance, mostly because I can purchase a 1 year blanket policy with them. Since I travel to the states 3-4 times a year usually, it makes more sense for me to do it that way than to do it on a trip by trip basis.

Insurance is 100% required for a Disney vacation in my opinion, and we bought ours from PC Financial. You can get a quote online fairly quickly, and the prices are very good. They offer medical, trip cancellation/baggage, and comprehensive coverage (a mix of both).

We have always used RC insurance for our past 8 cruises. We had to cancel our last cruise due to husband being laid off. We received all of our costs back. RC insurance covers loss of work which most other insurance companies do not. We would never take a cruise without insurance.

Sorry, I meant RBC insurance.
