I am a bit unsure of what amounts I am supposed to input when getting insurance quotes. For sites like PC Insurance and Travel Guard, it asks for the prepaid and non-refundable expenses.

"Trip Cost

Trip Cost refers to the total prepaid and non-refundable expenses already submitted toward the trip regardless of who booked the arrangements. This does not include estimated or anticipated costs that have not yet been paid. If there is no trip cost, please enter 0
."

What number do I put in if I have only paid the $200 Disney deposit, and airfare that was booked separately?

I have tried several sites, and none of them are giving me quotes that are less than the Disney insurance ($139 for 2 adults and 1 child). RBC quoted me over $330 for its package that includes medical and trip cancellation.

Any ideas?

If you look into it I think you will find that the medical on Disney's is very limited in terms of total coverage compared to RBC or Blue Cross.

The $330 sounds right - that's what I was quoted. Instead of this option, I decided to apply for an Amex Gold instead. The Amex Gold usually has a fee, but right now it's waived for the first year, so as long as you cancel before the end of the year, it's free - usually cost $150, I think. This covers Trip interruption, out of province medical for 3 weeks, lost baggage, car rental insurance, etc. The only thing is doesn't cover is trip cancellation.

If you want trip cancellation, you can get the Amex Platinum instead (if you want a referral link, PM me), for $499 annual fee, which gives you everything the Gold does in addition to the trip cancellation. This costs more than the RBC insurance, but there are added benefits too (Amex points, which are convertible to Aeroplan miles to redeem for free flight)....I'm considering getting this card in addition to the Gold card.

Just thought I'd let you know of this alternative.

Also, to answer your first question, you would enter all your vacation costs that are non-refundable or can't be changed to another date, so although you've only paid the deposit, you would want coverage on the total costs. The only thing you need to double check is your airfare - this might not be included in the insurance from RBC, if you are able to change the flights to another date for a fee. Air Canada flights, although they cannot be refunded, can be changed for $150 and rescheduled within a year, so this wouldn't be eligible for the trip insurance.

Thanks. I'll have to find Disney's policy online and read up on the coverage. If the medical coverage is limited, I wonder how Disney's trip cancellation/interruption/baggage coverage compares with other insurance companies.

Thanks for your suggestions of getting coverage through Amex. It's good to hear about alternatives.

I have called up several insurance companies, and they all asked for the total cost of the trip (not just prepaid non-refundable costs). All are also quoting in the $300 range for 2 adults and 1 child.

I buy Disney's insurance just for the cancellation portion of it & then buy extra medical from CAA. It has been the cheapest way to go we have found.

Thanks. Your way sounds like a good plan. I'll check into it.

The medical & sickness porition of disney is only $10,000 each, so not enough & CAA's medical is $5,000,000.

I think for a family of 4 we pay around $50 for medical with CAA (doesn't matter if you're a member or not) & I'm pretty sure the cancellation with Disney is $60 per adult. It's been a few years since we went but that's what it is was then so for 2 adults $120 + $50 = $170.

We have a yearly travel policy on my Mastercard..You can't beat the price. We pay $69 a year because we do need medical..but with medical its only $99 a year and it covers everyone in your family for unlimited trips per year under 31 days each. We were paying $1000+ for travel insurance doing it per trip..check it out

Why not look into one of the annual plans? At least if you travel often? RBC offer it...I have one with Intact-called Travelwell 30. Costs me Just over $100 a year for unlimited trips up to 30 days in duration for a family of 4 adults. Have used it twice over the years, last time last month to cancel a cruise and they refunded every penny..even the $100 USD I lost on cancelling a Jetblue flight for my DD from NYC to FLL. Not one question over and above the form completion and I had my money back within 10 days of submitting. They are excellent.

I have Annual medical from Blue Cross, then have trip interruption etc with my Visa card

Just want to thank everyone for their good advice regarding insurance through credit cards, annual insurance plans, etc.. It is truly helpful! :)
