I know people feel very strongly about whether or not to take kids out of school for Disney, so I don't want to start any debate, just constructive thoughts.

We are trying to hit up a Star Wars Weekend day, to appease my husband who has no desire to go to Disney - hopefully I can change that! - and finally take my girls who are in 1st and 2nd grade. I have been considering two sets of dates May 7 - 14 and June 4 - 11. Both have the potential of being over at least one SWW day (hopefully), but the June dates would have the girls only miss the last two days of school (which are half days) and the May dates would miss a week. I'm sure there will be some assessments going on, but they do not start the high stakes end of grade testing until 3rd grade. So while I know I should be good and take them in June, I realize this is the last chance we'll have to do a May vacation for a very long time (we took a cruise in May of last year and they loved it). The girls can get excused absences from school for educational trips, which I'm going for in EP and AK, that's educational enough for me.

I was just curious if anyone with kids this age have any difficulty with missing a week in school, close to the end of the school year? My girls are doing fine in school, and I still feel like this is a young enough age where missing a week of school, even in May, may not be a big deal. Naturally I like the idea of lower crowds, especially since it will take some convincing to get my husband to go back, slightly lower temps, and saving $350 on lodging in May. But I'm open to any thoughts.

I think May would be fabulous and at your girls' ages I wouldn't hesitate. I took my girls out up to 5th grade. After that we have done as early as we can in June while some schools are still in session (such as your June dates), but I would love to do May if we could. June is hot. Now with both of ours in high school and spring sports, May is impossible. I say go for it now, while you can.

Absolutely go for it. May will be so much less crowded and at least a bit cooler. Enjoy and don't worry. We pulled our kids every other year through 8th grade. no regrets. May is basically review for younger grades. Third up there is standard testing to consider, but under that, no worries.

I'd do May since they're so young and it sounds like your school would be fine with it. In my state, the school would not be okay with it, but luckily, most states aren't as strict as mine!

I would go for May! Do they have field days/party for the last day of school? They might not want to miss that.
