Trip from LA to San Diego??? What should I see

Traveling down from LA to San Diego on Sunday, May 29th.
What should I go see along the way.
We want to drive down the coast take our time and stop at a pier or something like that.
Any ideas would be appreciated.

What comes to mind is in Ocean Side. There is a pier there and it's just a few blocks off the freeway. Time wise about half way down.
