I think you will find a much better deal on the car rental. I usually get the best rates 9-12 months out & then they rise until the last minute. Sometimes they will fall, sometimes lower than what I am holding, sometimes not. Jusyt keep checking rates & modify your reservations as needed. I would NOT stay off property without a car, but I won't stay on-property without one either!
I would watch the ticket prices through Undercover Tourist & grab them when you see the deal you can live with. You can always add days later if need be, but you can't get less days returned. I always add park hopper, because that is how we like to tour.
We have also found that many TS restaurants have a lower price for lunch & sometimes "lunch" is served until 3pm. This saves us money due to the lower lunch price & we can usually get by with a carried in snack to hold us over until lunch. We can also usually save money by eating outside the parks. Many of the restaurants are more affordable than eating in Disney or Universal & the food is usually better. I do not find a TA helpful, I just keep working on until I am happy with my pricing. I think TAs do better with packages. JMO
