A word of caution – I have never written a trip report before. Started many but have never written one start to finish. I'm going to try this time. Really, I am. I even have notes this time. And I have pictures. But the pictures aren't loaded from the camera yet. But I will get it done. Please understand that I'm a newbie and certainly will not be among the "greats".

Trip Report: Pre-trip planning and up to day before arrival day (Wednesday May 24)

Cast of Characters:
Me AKA Boo: Lover of all things Eeyore, huge rollercoaster fanatic, and object of desire of DS2 and DD4 ("Mommeeeeeee")
DH AKA Yogi: Lover of all things Donald Duck, does not care about rides at all, adores DS2 and DD4
DS2 AKA Nicki: Lover of all things Buzz Lightyear, Dash Incredible, Polar Express and trains, despises all swings and rides with motion.
DD4 AKA Nat: Lover all things Princess-related, huge carousel fanatic and so wants to ride "the big rollercoaster" this year

Trip experience:
Last visit to Walt Disney World was December 2004 to celebrate Nicki's 1st birthday; we had stayed at the Contemporary Resort, Tower Room with a beautiful view of the Magic Kingdom. We tried to book the same room but the new room category with the guaranteed Magic Kingdom view was all sold out, so this time we booked a Magic Kingdom View room at the Polynesian, with a request for a Third Floor non-smoking room at the Polynesian. Yogi and I had stayed at the Boardwalk Inn in November 1997 while celebrating my parents' 50th wedding anniversary and we just loved staying on-site. All our prior Disney visits had been off-site at hotels in Kississimmee.

We had booked our Disney trip in August 2005 through AAA so we could "lock" our Disney admission prices prior to the January 2006 rate increase. We also decided to get the Disney Dining Plan and though it would work out to be a pretty good deal as Nicki would be "free" at character breakfast buffets and would be able to share at other table service dining. (Plus he would not require ticket admission at the parks.) In September, we started a huge paper countdown chain, which we hang from our hallway wall, and every morning, Nat and Nicki would tear down one link to countdown the number of days left before we would go to Walt Disney World.

We opted not to buy trip insurance as we could change our airline tickets (United/TED) for $100 change fees and could get everything but our deposit back from AAA if we had cancelled five days out. Of course that tempted fate. In April 2006, the "chief" at Yogi's office (the person that DH was "#2" to) left to take another job and on May 4, Yogi learned that he would not have a job after mid-June thanks to an associated "reshuffling" in his office. Yes, just 21 days before we were to head to Walt Disney World, we learned that we would be down to one income in the household. Logic would argue that we cancel our trip to Disney.

But as DH said, he could not have faced our kids with their teeny paper chain and tell them the trip was cancelled/postponed. So we went forward with our plans.

I had done lots of planning and the focus of this trip was All Princesses All the Time. We are not the sort to go to Disney once a year, and had pretty much figured that our next trip would not be until just before Nicki started Kindergarten. Since Nat would be starting school this Fall, our next trip would likely be in April 2009. She will likely be all over the "princess phase" by then, so our (my!) intent was to get as much out of the princess stuff that we could this trip. That means lots of Princess events princess: , including the unbelievably expensive Perfectly Princess Tea Party, etc. I booked pretty much everything at the 180+10 day mark, with some minor shuffling around thanks to some tips I learned from Tour Guide Mike. I also placed a "let's have breakfast stuff in the room" order with GardenGrocer.com in advance (May 22) of our departure.

On Friday, May 19, just two weeks after getting the "no job" news, I started packing. We started out with three 26" suitcases and three 20" suitcases, but I added in one large duffel bag just to give us some room for other stuff, especially since I was concerned about the 50 pound weight limit on bags. These are just the checked bags. (!) For carry-ons we would bring two tote bags, a diaper bag, and the kids each had their own rolling "turtle" suitcase. Plus a gate-checked double stroller (Maclaren Twin Traveler).

Nicki had a doctor's appointment on Friday, May 19, which was an ear check appointment. He has a history of fluid in his ears, so our pediatrician is keeping an eye on him to see if he needs to be referred to an ENT. I booked the appointment on this date so if he needed a round of Zithromax for an ear infection, it would have the necessary 5 days to kick in to gear before us boarding a flight to Orlando. He just started with a slight sneeze that morning, and the doctor took a peek at his ears and said that yes, he has fluid in there, but it is not a raging ear infection, is not red, etc., so he's fine to go on a plane – at least right then – but that we need to make an appointment for another ear check in July.

Throughout the weekend Nicki was fine, but Sunday night he was up and down a couple of times during the night. I gave him Tylenol around 10 PM and by the morning he seemed fine and his normal "goofy" self, so I took him and his sister to daycare and they were dressed in their gymnastics shirts for class that day. I picked them up at the end of the day and his teacher said he seemed a little grumpy, which I chalked up to his tough night's sleep at home. But Monday night was a little tougher on him, so I called the pediatrician's office first thing Tuesday morning, and got in to see one of the doctors at 9 am. She took a look at his ears and said they had fluid but there was no raging ear infection. I explained about my concern about the airplane flight and she recommended giving him some Dimetapp for the flight as that might sedate him a little and help him feel better, and to make sure he drank water on descent in the plane. So I brought him to daycare and headed to my office. At 3:30 pm I got a call from daycare that Nicki had a 100 degree fever, so I wrapped up everything at work and headed to pick him and Nat up. I had to get Nicki better for our flight and now had an unexpected day to finish up packing and final preparations. :bitelip:

Wednesday was spent nursing Nicki back to "good" health, which included a run to the local CVS (have you ever tried buying Dimetapp nowadays? "ID, please. Please sign this form. And please certify this sheet." :furious: Sheesh!) and a quick run to the local dollar store. And packing, of course. I managed to get everything pretty much done except last-minute items that would have to be added in Thursday morning.

NEXT UP: ARRIVAL DAY

Trip Report: Arrival day (Thursday May 25)

Our flight was out of Dulles in the afternoon, so Yogi would be home around noontime – his next-to-last day of work, as he last day in the office would be June 2, the day following our return home from Disney. (He had a lot of "cleanup" to get done on our departure day.) In the morning I finished up packing and spent some time looking at the weather forecasts online (NWS weather forecasts, thank you –NOT Accuweather) and wondering how we would make out with seven straight days of heat indexes in the low to mid 90s, but hey, what are you going to do? I put the Magical Express yellow luggage tags on our seven checked bags and made sure we had labels (my business cards) on the inside of all the luggage as well. The kids had a late (11 AM) snack and Yogi was home by 12:15 PM. Time to head for the airport! But first have to unplug appliances – unplug the washer, the dryer, the televisions, the computer – all set! Timers are on, neighbor has all our itinerary information – off we go.

We head down the street and – eek! – Nat doesn't have Katie. Katie is Nat's Bitty Baby (all you American Girl fans out there know what/who a Bitty Baby is) and Nat even packed a suitcase for Katie in her checked bag. Nat says that Katie doesn't like to fly so she's rather stay home. Mother's Lesson – do not always listen to your children.

We could not check in on our TED flight online – surely because the flight was so full – so Yogi was going to try to do curbside check-in as well as change our seats so we were four across instead of two seats behind two seats. I dropped him off with the checked bags and carry-on bags while the kids and I drove off to park the car at the parking garage. Got them loaded into the stroller and we met up with DH at security. Doing the security check-in was a dream at Dulles – maybe the fear of a double stroller? *giggle* But they opened up a "lane" for me and we did the security shuffle, collapsing the stroller, kicking off my Keens (sandals), etc. All in all a good trip through so far. We get to the other side and get the stroller back together, complete with children and bags hanging off handles, and off we head to the shuttle to our gate. (I call these the DuneMobiles – those of you that have flown through Dulles, don't these things remind you of that movie with Sting?) Nicki asks if we are on the airplane yet and then starts this moaning "WHOAAAAAAAAAA" which is reminiscent of his favorite movie, The Polar Express. Happy that we haven't freaked half the passengers on the shuttle, we head to our gate. First stop – potty break time for Nat. Of course she's all set, so Nicki (still in diapers) wants to wash his hands. That's next for Mommeeeeeee.

Okay, both kids are set. We have 40 minutes until they start boarding are plane. Off to pick up some food. I get sandwiches from Potbelly's (yum) and bring them back for everyone. Nat, who seems to subsist on air, doesn't want hers. Nicki wants the chips. Yogi likes his meatball sandwich and I eat mine standing up while chasing the two kids around. We then do another round of potty runs, and we're ready for pre-boarding. Gate check the stroller, get the kids all set in seats, listen to how everyone wants to sit with Mommeeeeeee (!), and try to settle in for an uneventful flight. We intentionally did not bring a DVD player with us, so we were happy to learn that TED flights include XM Kids (a mainstay in our household), so we got that set on their headsets. Of course Nat is near tears because "Katie is all alone and she's going to be scared to be by herself." Oy. We took off on time (with accompanying "WHOAAAAAAAAAA" calls) and landed in Orlando on time. So we gathered up our carry-on bags and the four of us headed out (5:40 pm) to retrieve our stroller and head to Magical Express.

I was a little concerned about getting to Magical Express because I get easily confused (lost!) all the time. But I knew in advance that our gate would be on the B side and that I had to get to the 1st floor of the A side to get to the bus. So we walked and looked for signage directing us to "A". We found that relatively easily and boarded the shuttle (more "WHOAAAAAAAAAA" calls) and took the elevator downstairs. We did not see any signs that said "Magical Express" but I did see an overhead sign that said Mears. So we kept on walking, and then we saw the "Magical Express" sign on the wall. We got in the (very short) line and showed our ME travel vouchers (5:55 pm) and were directed to a line for the ME bus to the Polynesian. Less than 2 minutes later, the driver loaded our stroller and four of our carry-on bags onto the bus (I kept the diaper bag). We waited for about 5 minutes for additional passengers, and then we were off. First stop was the Wilderness Lodge. Next stop was the Contemporary. We were the third stop at the Poly. DH tipped the driver for his help with the bags, and now we were headed for check-in at the Great Ceremonial House at the Poly (6:50 pm).

The inside of the main building of the Polynesian is very nice – our kids loved the waterfall and the beautiful plantings. We had a short wait in the non-concierge check-in. I was trying to contain Nicki, who just wanted to RUN at this point. Nat was tired and getting cranky (and had no nap), so we had some "issues" with the four pink leis that we were given at check-in, but we managed to survive without any huge meltdowns. We were assigned room 3032 in Tahiti, which met with my request made at reservation time – third floor balcony non-smoking room in Tahiti, and we paid for Magic Kingdom view. We were armed with our map of the Polynesian and headed to our room.

Our first mistake is we took the service elevator up to the third floor instead of the "regular" elevator – whoops! But we managed to get to the room and – no refrigerator. We had requested a refrigerator. And the message light on our phone was blinking. Checked the messages and it was Brian from Garden Grocer – we had to call him back so he could deliver our order. I had DH call (7:20 pm) and I tried to get someone at the front desk. 15 minutes on hold and I gave up – Nat and I walked back to the GCH to wait at check-in to get a refrigerator for our room. We waited about 5 minutes for someone to help us; they said they would have one sent right away (7:45 pm). Nat and I head back to the room and see that there's a delivery – it's Brian with our groceries (7:50 pm). Brian is great and let's us know that if we need a second deli very during our stay that there is no delivery charge. Great service and prices are what we pay in the metro Washington DC area, so no complaints at all from me!

So we get the kids something to eat (Cheerios) and decide to order room service. I honestly cannot recall what we had exactly. I know I had the teriyaki steak and I think my better half had the Asian noodles. We also had sticky wings and I had the potstickers. Nat had a PB&J and Nicki ate most of it. Room service arrived before the refrigerator so DH called the front desk this time and was told that the refrigerator was already delivered. (HUH?) Well, it apparently went somewhere else so they sent another one and we had it by 8:45 pm (just after our luggage delivery at 8:30 pm). DH loaded up the fridge while I finished unpacking and we were all "settled in" in time to see the Electrical Water Pageant from our balcony at 9 pm. The kids were in their jammies on the balcony and were so excited by everything that they stayed up to watch Wishes on the balcony, too. They were snug in bed by 10:20 pm.

We had some serious "issues" with the air conditioning in our room. No, this was not a refurbished room, but those temperature dials are very tough to read. And I am not sure what in the world was going on, but all of us ended up very congested our first night at the Poly. Was it Nicki's cold? Was it allergies? Was it from the flight/traveling? I don't know, but I was a congested mess, as were both kids and hubby. Thankfully I packed just about every medication available at CVS, but anyone with allergies, just a heads up to bring a decongestant or something like that.

A husband who recognizes that Disney magic always trumps harsh reality is tops in my book. :thumbsup2

Please post photos when you can; looking forward to the rest! popcorn::

Beautiful View! Thanks for your report. I am really enjoying it and am awaiting the rest! :thumbsup2

Thanks for the picture of the view. Now I know where to stay if I can't get the Magic Kingdom view at the Contemporary.

I am enjoying your report. Sorry to hear that you had bad news before your trip. Sending you and your DH pixie dust. pixiedust:

Hi ... great start to your trip report - LOVE the view - looking forward to reading more :thumbsup2

I can't wait to hear more, I'm planning an "all princess" trip at the end of Nov for just me and DGD(3) - DD is graciously giving her up to me for 5 whole days!

Thanks so much for all the well wishes and comments.

fabumouse, I totally agree with your thumbs up. :) Even with the "harsh reality" of being back home, he doesn't regret our decision to go to Disney for a second.

LAS, I really liked the Contemporary for the "location location location" aspect of walking back and forth to the MK. And the view of the Park from a MK Tower room is incredible. But if you have plans to use the pool at all, I can say from first hand experience that the Poly pools are much better, particularly for little kids that appreciate the zero entry. We were in the pool every day this trip. Of course that wasn't the case when we visited in December 2004. Just something to think about if you are going to stay during a "high pool use season".

hopesmommy, thanks so much for the pixie dust. :)

bjakmom, I'll try to add in as many details as I can about the "all princesses all the time" approach we took for this trip. We (I!) did a lot of research about what to do, what to bring, etc. We went through three autograph/photo books just for DD. If I had to do it all over again, I probably would have made my own autograph/photo book so we could have everything in one book. I still might do just that once we print her pictures and such. But having your own autograph book would spare you having to slice out pages out of a bound autograph book.

Sorry this trip report is taking so long to post -- I'm trying to pick the right photos to go along with the text!

Trip Report: Magic Kingdom Day (Friday May 26)

Our Agenda:
Crystal Palace character lunch at 11:30 am

Must rides:
Dumbo
Carousel
Buzz Lightyear

BRRRRRNNNG! Yes, it's the phone and it’s 7:00 AM. Stitch woke us up for our scheduled wake up call. Nat is awake but Nicki is still drowsy and not quite awake yet. I sneak in a quick shower and Yogi gets bowls of Cheerios and milk set for the kids. Just LOVE having breakfast in the room! The kids pick out their own Ziplok-bag-packed outfit out of their drawers, have been appropriately sunscreened, and everyone is ready to head to the Magic Kingdom by 8:30 AM. The question would center on which way would we go do we take the Ferryboat from the TTC? The monorail from the Great Ceremonial House? The monorail from the TTC? Nicki requested the boat, so off to the ferryboat we go. So we're packed like we are going on an expedition: double stroller with two bags hanging off the handles -- a diaper bag and a backpack filled with "stuff".

May26MK.jpg

Off to the TTC gates and our first breath of the magic -- there's just nothing like the first time through the gates, even though they are only the TTC gates. We head to the Ferryboat and take up a spot towards the front of the boat, and manage to get some nice pictures of our longhouse.

May26Poly.jpg

The ride is nice – this is hardly a “commando” approach to touring Walt Disney World, but we agreed that our touring style would not be that approach for this trip. (I did, however, have a small photo album loaded with 4 x 6 index cards of park touring tips so we would have the best chance of doing our Must See things with the shortest of ride lines.)

Okay, our Ferryboat has docked -- next trick is to get through bag check at the gates. Yogi took the kids with the double stroller and I took the bags. Very nice CMs here handling the bag checks -- friendly, warm, and just a pleasure to be around, even while holding half your stuff in plastic bags. The next challenge is to get through the turnstiles with our room key/tickets time to get Nat out so she can do her "fingers" in the biometric scanner and we all manage to get through without losing a 4 year-old or the 2 year-old in the stroller.

By the time we arrived the park was already open, so we headed to the Main Street Cinema to get a new Pal Mickey. We had brought our old Pal Mickey from our last trip and had decided that we would get a new, tuxedo-clad Pal Mickey as a friend. This way Nat could have her Pal Mickey and Nicki could have his Pal Mickey. After our purchase, we continued down Main Street towards the castle. We had already decided that we had three ride requirements for the day: Dumbo, Cinderella's Golden Carousel, and Buzz Lightyear's Space Ranger Spin. If we could get these three rides in before our 11:30 AM ADR for the Pooh character lunch at the Crystal Palace, we would have considered it a good day. Armed with my trusty 4 x 6 index cards with our MK touring hints, it was off to Dumbo! Yikes, what a line! Time to switch plans – off to the tea cups instead. No line here – yes, it’s a walk on, and we have our choice of tea cups. That’s us in the purple tea cup:

May26Teacups.jpg

Next up – there’s a very short line (about 10 people) at The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh, so we decide to do that. What a great ride! I wasn’t sure how Nicki would do with the dream/dark part of the ride, but he was so happy with the bouncing Tigger part, nothing else phased him. (Nicki is not a fan of rides at all – he screams when we try to put him on a baby swing at the park or even on a merry-go-round, so I figured he might ride on the WDW train and that would be about it.)

May26Pooh.jpg

At this point Nat is starting to shift into Whine-o-matic mode – might it have anything to do with her being up so early this morning? Nah. She wanted to ride Dumbo or the carousel. So off we went to look at lines again – Dumbo no good, Carousel good. So we got in line at the carousel. We could not get on for the next ride but we were first in line for the ride after that. Yippee, I said! Have to counter Whine-o-matic with the idea that Nat could pick her own horse to ride, and maybe she could find Cinderella’s horse. So that’s what she did.

May26Cindyhorse.jpg

After the Carousel, we headed to Dumbo where the line wasn’t so bad now – about a 5 minute wait. Nicki wasn’t so sure about this up and down stuff, but he seemed to be okay with it since it was three of us together. It was getting close to 11 AM and I wanted to head to Frontierland to get a FastPass to Big Thunder Mountain Railroad (my favorite ride in the Park) before heading to lunch at Crystal Palace. So the kids got back in to the stroller and off we went. We head to Frontierland and – who do we see? Sheriff Woody and Jessie! Nicki loves Woody, so we “just have to” stop now. Armed with autograph books, we stand in this LONG line (thankfully in the shade) to get autographs. Well, Yogi stands in the long line while I head off to get FastPasses. It takes me all of 10 minutes to get to and from BTMR and the gang is still waiting for autographs. About another 10 minute wait (including a much needed water break for Woody and Jessie) and we get autographs and pictures.

May26WoodyJessie.jpg

Time for lunch, everyone! We check in at 11:20 AM and I bring the kids to the Baby Care center next door for potty/diaper changing and just a splash of cool air. Yes, those mister things are great, but a shot of air conditioning is much welcomed, too. We head back over to Yogi and the pager at Crystal Palace and we’re seated at roughly 11:40 AM.

The character lunch at the Crystal Palace is one of my favorite character meals. I think the Crystal Palace is quite spacious and the meal is less “wild” than Chef Mickey’s. (Of course we have only been to Chef Mickey’s once and that was for dinner in December 2004, so I’m hardly an expert. It’s just a preference thing.) Character interaction was great here:

May26CrystalPalacePoohTigger.jpg

May26CrystalPalacePiglet.jpg

Nicki seemed to like th ice cream in particular:

May26CrystalPalace.jpg

After lunch, we headed back to Big Thunder Mountain Railroad so Nat and I could use our FastPasses. She loved the rollercoaster and the fact that she was tall enough to ride this year – plus the “no line” part was great, too. After our ride, she was pretty tired out – we made it through to Adventureland where both kids ended up asleep in the stroller:

May26afterBTMR.jpg

and it was hot, so we decided to head back to the Poly and try taking a nap or, if that wouldn’t work, heading to the pool. The kids ended up napping for a while and we ended up at the Volcano pool around 4:30 PM. We all loved the pool! It was fairly busy but not overly crowded, and we managed to get a chair nearby. The lifeguards were good about controlling any wild horseplay and such around the waterslide. Nat is not a good enough swimmer to handle the end of the water slide into to pool so she didn’t go, but I took a ride down – it’s a great slide!

We decided to opt for counter service and watching Wishes from our room tonight. We went to Captain Cook’s – I had a grilled chicken sandwich which was okay, and the kids had mac & cheese. Yogi had pizza which he didn’t care for too much. We watched the Electrical Water Pageant from our balcony as well as Wishes, and then called it a night.

Ride we still need to go on:
Buzz Lightyear's Space Ranger Spin
