Hi!

I'm specifically looking for trip cancellation insurance that covers cancellation of a cruise due to a preexisting medical condition.

I have a feeling no insurance is available.

This is the situation.

To go on a cruise, you have to pay everything in advance (about 3 months in advance).

When you buy a cruise from DCL, you also can buy trip cancellation insurance.

If you have to cancel your trip for a reason that is covered by the insurance, the insurance company will refund you the cost of the trip.

So for example, if you get very very sick and can't go on the cruise, you file a claim with the insurance company, which reimburses you for the cost of the cruise.

However, if you are too sick to go on the cruise due to a preexisting condition, the insurance company will NOT reimburse you. They will not refund your money.

So for example, if someone has cancer that is in remission, but then the cancer comes back right before the trip and the person is too sick to travel, they will not get their money back from the insurance company.

I have to call DCL and see what they say about a situation like that.

But i'm pretty sure there are no insurance company policies that cover it.

I know that the insurance company for the DCL cruises does NOT cover that situation..

I was hoping someone on the board would know of a company that does cover such a situation.

It has been my experience that purchasing travel insurance within a specified period after making the reservation (2 weeks thru my TA) will provide coverage for pre-existing conditions. If the insurance is purchased more than 2 weeks after the initial booking date, pre-existing conditions are not covered.

I would see what you can learn at insuremytrip.com and also talk with your TA. You may need to cancel and rebook your trip to get the insurance to cover it.

no, the company that insures DCL cruises does NOT reimburse you for a cancelled trip if the cause is a preexisting medical condition, no matter what.

i spoke with them on Friday and they said in no uncertain terms that under no condition do they ever provide trip cancellation insurance for a pre-existing medical condition.

I also spoke with two other big trip insurance companies and neither of them covers that situation either.

I was hoping someone else knew of a policy that does cover this situation.

The policy I purchased for our just-completed cruise on RCCL included a waiver for pre-existing conditons because I purchased the policy within 10 days of making my initial deposit 18 months ago. It was through Travelex, but I researched it on insuremytrip.com

There are also one or two carriers that will waive the pre-existing condition requirement if the policy is purchased within 24 hours of making final payment. Again, those policies are probably listed at insuremytrip.com

Your best bet is to go there and run through the process of entering the details of your trip to get prices and policies available. Then, take advantage of the chance to call the carriers DIRECTLY and explain your situation. That is the best way to make sure you get the coverage you want and need.

I spoke with Access America specifically to purchase insurance for MIL when we booked a cruise less than the 14 days prior to include PECs and AA does NOT cover cancer as a PEC for any reason. The only company that did this was Travelguard. I had to call and talk to her doctor to make sure that she was able to travel on the day I bought the policy and booked the cruise. His nurse had him note this in her file on that date and she was covered. They made good on it too since her chemo schedule changed in the 1 1/2 years from the time we booked the cruise to 2 months prior to the cruise and she could no longer go with us and we had to cancel. I would be very specific with the representative you talk to and find out their current policy
